I'm going along with the switching because I play games for the competitive scene and not for the actual game, but there are some games that I ended up liking for X reasons, and it's a shame to see less and less players active in it.

this is a really dumb question that is really just tunnelvisioning 1 trend lol You're lacking important details. A trend you should come across is how widespread LoL was able to take off when SC2 couldn't make it big even with Brood War to back it up (especially in Korea) Another thing you should think about DotA being really prestigious as LoL nowadays. Biggest steam game + TI is a really cool annual tourny to follow with a huge prize pool. Other things to consider is the seemingly smaller skillcap required to play LoL, hence a more profitable investment for mechanically sound players. Other than BW, SC2, DotA, LoL, what game could you possibly be talking about?? My problem is answering the question. We have competitive scenes for all 4 games.

The game has to be FUN! And most of all - rewarding! It has to feel like no matter how high up the skill-ladder you go, that there is still an infinite amount of things to improve on. LoL, with the teamplay aspect (which by itself is very rewarding) surely has this element. SC2 is just a bit dull. It's not as mechanically demanding as BW (which is what I love and is why I am playing it now), nor as strategically demanding as these MOBAs with 5 player teams or other, more cerebral games. Even if the game goes, you should play what YOU want to play. It makes no fucking sense to follow whatever game is "in" if you hate the shit out of it. BW is certainly not in like it was anymore, but that does not mean it is not still competitive as fuck! LoL has a lot of things going for it which is why it is in. As a competitor and a good one, it is only natural to see SC2 shrink as a result. Until SC2 ramps up the mechanical difficulty or the strategic depth (unit compositions are not depth, people) there will probably be a lot more former BW gamers and others who switch away from it (whether for money or because they are sick of the game). It's a natural part of the process. The only way to avoid it is to play the game YOU love, not the game that is in. If the game that is in happens to be something you enjoy, more power to you. This is why ESPORTS is a FAD. Games do NOT work in the same way as sports. It's the natural flow of technological advancement, dude.

the longest running competitive video game on a real pro level was broodwar, and even that couldn't last more than 12 years. people thought cs1.6 and quake 3 were going the end all be all of progaming, then CGS singlehandedly killed those games. people can't even decide on a street fighter to play, and always end up going for the newest version. esports the way most people want it to be is a pipe dream just enjoy whatever game you play and if it's lucky enough to be the new flavor of the month then maybe you'll get a few years of progaming out of it

I remember watching WCG when it was olympics for esports instead of what it is now, and watching Dreamhack was always a treat when it wasn't so LoL focused. I don't have anything against LoL players but I absolutely loathe the fact that LoL is the premier esports title when it is just some casual shitfest, and I can only see LoL getting bigger and bigger eventually devouring the scene. Nah, I think Dota2 will kill off LoL for two reasons: - LoL makes people rage, and eventually they will grow tired of their rage, and uh.... rage-quit. - Better team games are already emerging that are like LoL, but... better.
