Thanks for sharing your experience, the native-supported games sound pretty awesome (hopefully it's not too difficult to build-in and there will be widespread support in the coming years.)

I wonder how long it will take for a low-latency wireless version, but I would presume that battery and the connection are large technical hurdles.

I hope they can implement augmented reality into one of the future versions, there's so much that can be done with even just a Kinect attached to a head-mounted screen.

This is one of those things that would be cool to try out once, but I wouldn't actually want to own one and play with it frequently.

I had that thought too. Major motion sickness there!

As a game developer I felt like you named most of the pitfalls I anticipate this hardware to have. I'm still question if there is a market for the oculus rift or is it just something to have cause its cool.

As more games begin shipping with native support along with the consumer having a much higher resolution, I really believe this will be a game changer.

I also found a javascript library called vr.js that renders WebGL graphics so you can view it with the oculus. I tried it out yesterday and it works amazingly. I think you need a rift to try the demos but the tech is all there: https://github.com/benvanik/vr.js

I think I'll make my next post about cool applications on the web with the Rift. Already found an awesome Google Street View app - http://steeve.github.io/oculusstreetview/?lat=48.858724&lng=2.301134999999931&q=3&s=true&heading=102.34297347739098

I was just playing sc2 with my dev kit.. I just wish I could figure out a way to bind the motion tracking to camera movement so I could look around the map with my head. ie look up to the right and you'd see the top right corner of the map.
Anyone have any ideas?
This would be really nice with Dota 2 also as you can design custom UIs that might work better with the rift.
btw the units were really popping off the screen :p

I was using a program called deskope.. cuz when you leave rift apps you have to take the rift off to be able to do anything.
This program creates a virtual desktop and lets you look around it.. Then I ran sc2 / dota in windowed mode full screen which I'm sure you do already if you're using xsplit to stream on twitch. Also helps if you bind a short cut to deskope so you can run it from anywhere with the rift still on. Tip: rift needs to be in extended desktop mode not duplicate.
Found it worked best when zoomed far out between 30-50%... kinda rediculous atm but it's cool seeing stuff in 3D
props to the creator Angel Avila

I was lmao which was making the screen shake all over the place lol

Your girlfriend's a keeper! :D

This is definitely really interesting though. I've given given a lot of thought to how different from real like a normal keyboard/mouse input is, as far as perspective and vision. I get motion sickness kinda easily though, so I'm definitely a little worried about how the oculus rift would work for me I blew the device off at first as a gimmick, but it really seems quite amazing and/or legitimate based on everything I've heard. It's really where we could be headed. Still wonder how we might be able to reconcile the visual display versus our movements, though. One day there might be a way that truly links to our brain or something, that lets us believe we are experiencing certain sensory inputs.

At the moment I've managed to "detach" myself to keep myself grounded in the real world, but that doesn't detract from really awesome moments in the game where you really feel like you're inhabiting the world. It took myself a few days to get used to the experience, but after that I feel pretty good at playing really fast paced FPS games. Ginger ale or anything ginger will help with motion sickness.

I tried to play some airplane sims and I actually got a bit queasy from that, so I'll probably need to ease myself into that as well.

Definitely going to buy the oculus rift when it hits the consumer level... sounds so exiting but theres no way of truly knowing until I try it out for myself!

Got my rift yesterday after a long wait. I was a bit sick before I even started using it so i'm trying to do it slowly. I started with titans of space, was a really cool demo to show to non gamers and it really showcase the sense of scale that only vr can bring. And it's in fucking space, who doesn't like space seriously?
After that I tried the rift coaster, meh as people said it's kind of overated. Ocean rift was kind of cool, but not really breathtaking.
This morning i tried Museum of the microstar it also had a great sense of scale, but has performance issues so it's a bit of a barf machine. It made me a little bit sick (especially jumping) so i tried something calmer, proton pulse rift. I was not expecting much of it but it was amazing to play in the rift, the simple graphics work well and it shows how amazing the head tracking is on the rift. The only issue i had was that i had quite a lot of drifting.

Overall the rift is what I expected, definitely not a consumer product but already an amazing piece of tech. Screen door is an issue, low res as well but the fov is already great, as the head tracking is.
I do feel a bit sick though, but nothing to extreme. I'll wait a bit to try hl2 i want to be in shape to watch ti3 tonight, hard life.

By the way if there are TLers in paris that are really interested to see the rift in action feel free to PM me i'll be in town until next monday probably.

edit: couldn't resist going back to VR, tried the 3D scan girl demo (http://ir-ltd.net/ir-oculus-rift-vr-demo/) , really an impressive piece of tech.

Each time I went to try HL2, the intro section was the hardest to stomach because if there's no action going on, I focus on the motion sickness. I may suggest jumping into the later parts of the game first if you feel queezy to see if that helps.

Also if you use TriDef, you can watch DotA2 TI3 in 3DDDDDDD, but you can barely read any text :D

Ahah i actually tried it in a bot game, unfortunately the rift without head tracking is nothing more than an absolutely horrible 3D display ^^.
