Introduction-Storyline
The game is set in Neo Paris, where memory can be manipulated and altered, much like the movie Total Recall. You play as Nilin, a Memory hunter on the run from a watch-dog society that controls the very memories of its citizens. When you first meet Nilin, you meet someone who is confused and can’t remember her past and who she really is. Guided by her brother/boss Edge, you begin on your mission to recapture those memories. The bosses who you come into contact with are quite unique, and have interesting personalities and motives. The story is the reason I played through the game and it is the strongest piece of the game. It moves forward with twists and turns, keeping you on your toes and engaged. You will feel for Nilin as she moves through the game and as events happen. The world Nilin exists in could actually be what the cities of the future could very well look like. While the story is focused on what Nilin is doing, the game does not really allow you to dive in deeper and explore what the future is like. Instead all you get is the story that surrounds Nilin. Which isn’t a bad thing, I just wanted to explore the interesting and unique future presented in the game.
What a nice view
Gameplay
I played the game on the PS3. Graphically the game is one of the best looking games I have played on the system. Everything is colorful and shadows and textures look great. Facial expressions also look great. The game itself plays like an action game. The game has platforming elements as you move through the environment. You may have to climb up a wall, or jump to another platform. This is fun, but the game has the tendency to show you where to go. I didn’t like the game telling me what to do; part of the appeal of a game is figuring out things on your own. It even does this for boss fights, which can get annoying. Combat is the biggest issue anyone will have with this game. The way you fight is by chaining combos together. Which is fun, but what isn’t fun is the fact that you can’t parry at all, and that you really only can dodge in a fight. It feels unnatural. Because of the fact that you have to dodge to avoid taking damage, you lose your combo chain, which means, your combat system doesn’t work. The developers attempt to provide you with a way to feel like your combos are unique and you created them through pressens. There are four types of pressens, Chain, cool down, power, and regen. I found cool down, and regen the most useful type of pressen. The game also gives you some super moves that you unlock, which are awesome when you use them, but they require energy to use and you gain them by using the cool down pressen and taking damage. Back to combos, you unlock combos by essentially sticking a pressen into it. So for example a basic combo could be square, square, square. I put three regen pressens that are square shaped into it and you will have a healing combo, so that as you execute it you will gain back hit points. This is actually super useful because you can heal up really fast if you are terrible at dodging. However you don’t actually get to choose how you want the combo to be executed. The square, square, square combo can never be changed to be square, triangle, square. Overall combat flows like this: punch, dodge, punch, dodge, dead bad guy.
That satisfying moment you get to overload someones memories :D
Conclusion
Overall this game is a worthwhile play through for the sake of the story. I highly enjoyed it. The combat at first I found was pretty fun, turned into quite a bore. I really think it could have been a lot better had the developers took a bit more time on it. I also want to mention the music in this game and the voice acting work is phenomenal. A trend in video games lately is the rise of strong female characters, gone are the days of a helpless princess, now female video game characters kick ass. And Nilin does for sure. I would say rent or buy the game cheaply if you have a weekend and you want something to play; it is a short game only taking myself about 12 hours to beat on hard. Play it for the story, the music, and the visuals if nothing else! So I give this game 7/10, and I think it is worth a look at. I hope you enjoyed reading, maybe next time I will write about my romantic feelings to get them out of my system, or maybe just about Batman.
