100 Day Fitness Challenge
>>Updated 3/12/13<<

Updated 3/6/2013
I will be postponing my 100 day challenge for a better time. At the moment I do not have the time or energy to do this daily. The last couple days has taken a toll on my health. I have realized that it is more important to take care of my overall well being than worry about keeping up with my jogging challenge on a daily basis.

This was a tough call to make. And I will probably regret this in the morning. But even now, as Im typing this, I have work in literally 7 hours and I am still due for today's jog. It is simply too much for me to handle. I went into this challenge with the goal to get more fit, and I would say I have achieved that. I have lost considerable weight and I have gotten a lot more energetic.

That said, I will still update this blog when I do find the time to jog. I will probably be planning to do more hiking since I can prepare more promptly for them. I will definitely continue to run when I find time, I have absolutely no problem with maybe finding the time to run 3-4 times a week.

I cannot stress enough that this was not an easy decision. And I would like to thank everyone for the support and for all the people who kept up with my blog, it really meant a lot to me. Thank you for the support. <3

Hello TeamLiquid! For the next 100 days I will be updating my progress of running 2 laps around our local park, approximately 3 miles. I will take a snapshot of the park after every session and document and update here daily.

Why are you doing this?
Im a 24 year old student pursuing my Nursing Degree (RN). But this term I was unable to enroll in any classes. So now I thought it would be a good time to use all this free time to get more fit. Simple as that, really =D

Anyways, I hope this will be as easy as I make it sound xD. Here goes:

Day 1 (Jan. 23)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
First day was hard, I haven't gone running in nearly 2 months. Still finished strong with a slow pace nonetheless.

Day 2 (Jan. 24)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Today rained a bit while I ran, I had a jacket on so it was fine. But I was soaked at the end of the run.

Also, thanks for your support everyone, it makes a great motivation factor =D

Day 3 (Jan. 25)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Bright and sunny day, it was a very enjoyable run. My body is starting to feel conditioned at this point.

Day 4 (Jan. 26)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I stayed up most of lastnight playing D3 and then forced myself to wake up early for a scheduled Dota2 game, but it fell through. I tried to get more rest before I decided to head out, but it was impossible.

The run ended up harder than it usually was since I was a bit fatigued, fault on me >_>

Day 5 (Jan. 27)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I was fully rested and able. It was a very fun and enjoyable jog. I also invited my little sister to come along. She ended up being in better shape than I thought lol.

Weather kinda sucked, very windy and chilly. And it started to drizzle near the end. But still a good day nonetheless.

Day 6 (Jan. 28)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Prolonged my run till this evening. Bad idea. It was so dark and creepy. But also fun at the same time too. I felt like I was ready to run for my life at any moment's notice. Dem bakemonos, stay away from me onne gai shimasu! >_<

Day 7 (Jan. 29)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Another nighttime jog ^_^

It feels like a totally different experience when you're jogging in the dark. I may have to mix it up and do stuff like this more often in case I start to get bored.

Day 8 (Jan. 30)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Spent most of my day sleeping cause I was playing Civ 5 all lastnight. Only thing I had to eat was cereal for breakfast. It made this run a lot harder than usual, was getting a mild migraine halfway through -_-

Anyways, lesson learned: Always eat prompt to running.

Day 9 (Jan. 31)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Another day another night ^_^

And thanks for keeping up with my blog guys! It means a lot to me. Please feel free to ask any questions if you have any. =D

Day 10 (Feb. 1)

Jogged past this cute girl couple times this run. The petite asian type, very cute ^_^. That alone just made my day lol. Thought Id share =D

Day 11 (Feb. 2)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Im usually extremely busy on Saturdays since I volunteer to help run yugioh/vanguard tournaments. But I managed to squeeze in my run early this morning. ^_^

Day 12 (Feb. 3)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Not much to say. It was a fairly good jog, very very windy and chilly though. Im prolly gonna spend this week looking for a jogging jacket to invest in.

Also, if you're ever gonna play Civ 5 with someone named "Kaal", dont ever ever ever help him early game. That is all.

Day 13 (Feb. 4)

Motivated myself to go out before it got too late in the evening! Park looks beautiful during this time =)

Day 14 (Feb. 5)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Parents are starting to get on my case since Im doing nothing this semester. I have to find a part time job asap to keep em happy. Hopefully it wont conflict with my daily run (should I find a job).

Anyways, run was a bit tough today. I drank milk and it gave me some loose bowel movement. I felt pretty dehydrated through out the run. Lesson learned, dont drink milk near the expiration date =/

Day 15 (Feb. 6)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Today was very odd. I felt immediate fatigue on my muscles around my ankles and knees. Im guessing it was because I didnt stretch enough after I woke up from my 2 hour nap, or because I ate a TON of chicken curry last night, and the day of. Anyways I still pushed through, was a bit hard though = /

Also, there is a girl that jogs around the same time that I have the past couple days now. Not trying to turn this into a girl blog, but shes cute enough worth mentioning lol. ^_^

Day 16 (Feb. 7)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Jog felt harder than usual again, just like yesterday. I get immediate fatigue in my mucles around my calf and all over my legs. Maybe this marathon of daily jogs is finally catching up to me? I need to start watching my diet more and take supplements... =/

Anyways, I got a job interview in less than an hour. Its nothing big, just part time job at a Ralph Lauren clothing store. Im hoping I get it so my parents can finally get off my back.

Day 17 (Feb. 8)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Today felt a lot better than the past couple days. I guess the fatigue I felt in my legs were all in my head. I was able to push through it by listening to good music =)

Day 18 (Feb. 9)

Had a really long and exhausting day, but very fun at the same time too. Woke up 5am, watched anime. At 9, played Dota2 Pasture tourny (got raped 0-2) lol. Then judged for a yugioh event till 6pm. When I got home I started to get ready for my run at 7pm. I thought the run would be a lot harder this time, but it went very smoothly.

Also, I didnt get the job =( Supposedly we're supposed to get a phone call today if we got in or not, and I didnt get one T_T Anyways, Ill keep on the job hunt.

Anyways thanks for keeping up folks! Till next time. o/

Day 19 (Feb. 10)

Slept in a lot today. Got plenty of rest, felt really good. And the results showed while I ran, really really easy.

Day 20 (Feb. 11)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Had some baseball games going while I was running. I sat down watching it a bit after the run, it was really cool. Reminded me a lot of a good anime I watched not too long ago: Cross Game. A good sports anime to watch, highly recommended if you're looking for one.

Day 21 (Feb. 12)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I had to jog without a jacket tonight since they were all in the laundry. And let me tell you: it was FREEZING. I thought I could see my own breath at some points. My fingers were numb and my shirt was soaked of sweat so I felt a constant chill all over my body. I started to warm up the second half of the run, but the first half was pretty hellish lol.

Other than that, it was a pretty good run. And there was also another baseball game going, a lot more crowded than yesterday's one.

Day 22 (Feb. 13)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Run was okay. Not much else worth mentioning. Park was pretty crowded though, and lots of cute girls jogging around this time too =D

Day 23 (Feb. 14)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I got hired at that Ralph Lauren job I was talking about last week! =D I was a bit bummed out today since it was "singles awareness" day and stuff. But when the HR Manager called me after my run, I was like "WOOT!!".

Nothing much else to say, run was good too. ^_^

Day 24 (Feb. 15)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I ended up jogging pretty late into the night, about 9pm. It actually went a lot better than I expected Idk if it was the anxiousness of finally being able to get out of the house and jog, or the fact that I ate about 1,000 calories worth of chocolate (that my sisters brought home) earlier today. But yea, I felt like I powered through this jog extremely fast. Felt really good too.

Day 25 (Feb. 16)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Today was a really good jog again. I felt like I powered through the entire two laps with ease. Back in the first two weeks of this challenge I was usually out of breathe or sucking for air at the end of every run. But lately Ive been breathing with ease like its no big deal. Im starting to consider adding another lap to my challenge to make it more interesting. I think this is a good move, since I would be forced to eat a healthier diet. The food Ive been eating as of late are completely ass-unhealthy lol. I was considering a protein shake diet with no meat every single day, and a bunch of bananas for potassium and peas/broccoli as filler. Ill feel it out for now, but its a current goal I have atm.

Also, regarding my part time job. I still havent confirmed what my schedule will be, but its most likely going to be the 4-8am shift which is great for my schedule. I also had a pseudo job offer at the place I volunteer to judge yugioh events at. Not exactly confirmed, but they are looking and I would be more than glad to take up on that offer should they go through with it. So it looks like Ill be extremely busy with two jobs. Im really excited as to how this will all pan out. Hopefully Im not in over my head with this, but we'll see.

I feel really blessed with the amount of fortune thats been coming my way lately. When I thought I had been rejected from the Ralph Lauren interview, I hit a new low. It started to make me think, "If I cant get a simple part time job like this, what chances do I have when I complete my degree?". These things started to run through my mind, and I started to get depressed. It made me realize how tough life can be in a whole new light: That finding a job isnt as easy as I thought it would be. It was a real life lesson I learned, and will never forget. Anyways, I hate to vent this much, so Ill just stop right here. Thanks for your time and on going support (whoever you guys are) ^_^

Till next time! o/

Day 26 (Feb. 17)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
The jog tonight kinda sucked lol. It was incredibly windy with scattered showers. Even with my jacket on I was freezing. My fingertips were numb and every time I inhaled it felt like ice in my lungs.

The actual run itself was fine though. My legs feel so incredibly in shape now. I am very happy with my progress.

Day 27 (Feb. 18)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Did my jog a little earlier than usual since I had a job orientation at 4pm. Seems like Ill get my preferred schedule, 4am-8am. I really cant wait to get started!

In regards to the run, it was fairly fine. I powered through it pretty easily.

Day 28 (Feb. 19)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Even after taking a 2 hour nap prior to my run I felt pretty fatigued and tired. I guess I was so busy last week that I didnt rack up enough sleeping hours, and its finally caught up to me this week. Im gonna try my best to sleep in tomorrow, but then again there is a Fnatic game in the morning and I dont want to miss that >_>

Day 29 (Feb. 20)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Weather was nice and jog was nice. One of the more enjoyable days ^_^

Day 30 (Feb. 21)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I was dreading running tonight because it was raining all day and I didnt want it to be freezing. But overall the temperature was actually very nice. It wasnt windy at all, just very wet from all the rain and drizzle.

The run was really fun. I powered through it as usual. ^_^

Day 31 (Feb. 22)

Nothing out of the ordinary. Run was pretty good.

Day 32 (Feb. 23)
+ Show Spoiler +
Decided to do something random, and go hiking. I called my friend and asked if he wanted to go hiking with me and if he knew any easy spots. Boy did he troll me good...

Ill keep it short and simple. I was NOT prepared for this... But I dont regret this hike either. It was a fun experience that I hope to never do again in a loooongggggg time.

Day 33 (Feb. 24)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I opt'd to walk today instead of run. My legs are still extremely sore from the hike I took yesterday. This was more of a concern for injury than actually finding the mental fortitude to force myself to run. Hopefully tomorrow Ill be in better shape to run. As of now, my knees are killing me and it hurts just to stand up from sitting down or getting up from bed T_T

Day 34 (Feb. 25)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I was forced to walk yet again today. Even then, my leg gave out a couple times as I was walking. Im not optimistic that theyll be healed by tomorrow, but Im starting on protein shakes to help along with the recovery.

Day 35 (Feb. 26)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I had to walk again tonight, but my legs definitely feel a lot better than they did yesterday. Im pretty confident that Ill be good to go tomorrow. My body is incredibly antsy to start running again. This sudden stagnation in activity is making me really edgy >_>

Day 36 (Feb. 27)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
So I had to walk again today. Its really frustrating. I know I can push through the pain, it doesnt feel too bad anymore. But even then my knees just give out without warning, it really sucks. Anyways, hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Day 37 (Feb. 28)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
So just as I was going to leave my house to go jogging, at around 7pm. I found out that my aunt tried to call me multiple times half an hour earlier. I decide to call back, and just as I expect she wanted me to come over and watch her patients (Im her secondary caregiver for her carehome). Normally I politely turn her down and say that its too short a notice and that I was busy. But I really really needed the extra cash. So I just went there, knowing that my chances of running at the park were pretty much shot down.

I show up. Watch House for two hours. She comes back and pays me, but its already 10pm -_-. I pretty much know at this point the park is closed. I drive there anyways to check it out. The gates are closed... I drive home all depressed. And when I got home and parked, I was like--Fuck it, Im jogging around the block. And I did it lol.

My knees were fine, except for the minor pockets of pain here and there. But overall my legs felt really springy and strong. It was a really really fun jog. I coulda pushed myself even more, but decided to cut it short and not push myself too much. But Im definitely looking forward to tomorrow's jog, I feel like Ill be at 110% finally.

Day 38 (Mar. 1)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Finally got to do 2 laps jogging. It was felt sooo good. Minor pockets of pain around my knees, but it was easily ignored. First lap I pretty much powered through it, then going into the second lap I realized I didnt pace myself smartly, so I had to slow down drastically. But yeah, really good run. Happy to be back on track =D

Day 39 (Mar. 2)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Run was really good. But I somehow managed to creep myself the fuck out. This time, there were no baseball games going, so it was pretty much pitch black. I started to imagine scary stuff like ghosts hanging from the trees, ready to jump me from the dark. Gave myself goosebumps and my neck was stiffen with fright... Also a cat jumped out of a trashcan as I passed it, fcking scared the shit out of me, almost gave me a heartattack lol...

Day 40 (Mar. 3)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Run was fine, but really boring at the same time too. It was well lit this time, so nothing was running wild in my imagination. The next couple weeks will prove to be a challenge, time wise, for me though. Basically got work starting tues-friday 4:30am - 9:30am. Next week sat Ill have regionals to judge for ygo, pretty much an all morning/nighter day. Then the following sat there'll be Kawaii-kon (anime con) that Ill be staffing the entire weekend, for the better parts of the morning/afternoon.

I dont even have a plan on how Im going to jog through all of this. But Ill just play it out as it goes...

Day 41 (Mar. 4)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
The usual. Pretty good run. I got work in less than 8 hours. I should try to get to sleep early, oyasumi~.

Day 42 (Mar. 5)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Man, I felt so sluggy in today's jog. I pretty much had a 3 hour sleep after work, and ate a big meal after that because I was soo hungry. It really slowed me down, it was pretty frustrating. Tomorrow Ill be more prepared though.

Day 43 (Mar. 12) - 1 week hiatus
[image loading]
I was working this morning with a co-worker. And he revealed to me that he was training to go worlds or something. This kid is like 20 years old and weighs around 160lbs and can bench 285. I was so shocked. He said hes been training 3 months for this so far and the progress hes told me about was amazing, I was nothing short of impressed. Simply put: I was motivated. Right after work I pumped myself up to go jogging again. But once I started to run, I could immediately tell that I was so incredibly out of shape. I felt like I had a bowling ball in my belly and my legs felt so awkward trying to adjust to running again... =/

Anyways, I only managed to do 1 lap. My sides were cramping and I was so out of breathe. Starting today Im doing a strict diet with protein shake, broccoli, and bananas only. I really wanna whip myself back into shape again, this 1 week break has really set me back.

Good luck! Have fun! Exercise yay!

Questions:

Why did you choose to do this as a response, as opposed to something else?

Do you do any other regular exercise?

What if it rains or snows? Still gonna do it? Or run indoors the same distance (via treadmill or something)?

I chose exercising, running in particular, because over winter break all I did was play video games and watch anime. I wanted a change of pace lol, also I started to realize Ive been out of shape recently. aka Im looking to slim down, lol xD

I do other exercises. Mostly upper body lifting. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week on a regular basis. Im happy with my weight lifting progress so far, so I wanted to focus more on cardio instead.

I live on Oahu, this park is right next to Pearl Harbor, so the weather is always good. Even if it rains, Ill still run, Ive done it before and have no problem with it.

It's not hard.

Or rather, it's a mindset thing. I run about 12 times a week for a total of 70-80mpw. It's never been "hard" to me, because the mindset is I enjoy it and want to improve. Sure, there are some days where it's 20 and snowy and windy and dark and I don't really want to get up and run 8 miles, but that's more a motivation thing. I remind myself that once I'm out there I almost always enjoy myself.

The "hard" part really should just be getting out the door, which you combat with mindset and reminding yourself (at least for me) that "I've never regretted going on a run once I finished". If the actual runs are hard and miserable....you're doing it wrong. Their is a time and a place for faster/hard workouts, but if you are new to running just getting out the door and doing it is going to yield nice progress for the first three of four months.

If your goal is to get faster/better fitness I'd highly recommend adding like 4-8 "strides" to the end of each run, which are basically "relaxed sprints" of maybe 100m-150m. They should be smooth and fast, but not so hard you rig up or anything at the end. They aren't meant to be difficult in any way whatsoever so take as much recovery as needed. Don't start the next gasping for air or something.

slow down and walk any time you become "out of breath". you'll have to do this less and less over the weeks. you wont feel like you're killing yourself and will make better progress in the long run (more enjoyable)

Actually I'd say this isn't the right approach. You're right you shouldn't kill yourself most of the time when running, but stopping to walk isn't the right approach.

You should find a pace that doesn't require you to stop and walk or hurt if you continue to run at that pace. A good "normal" running pace should leave you almost refreshed and invigorated after a run. While running you should be able to converse m multiple sentences with ease, and not feel worried about the intensity even if told you would have to run for hours.

Good luck man!

Here's a tip, watch or read something which gives you motivation everyday. It helps a lot :D I usually watch some on youtube, like bodybuilders or a very successful person giving an inspirational speech.
