Vienna as a new home?

Hello TL,

does anyone here live in Vienna or has spent any amount of time in Austria's capital?
Are any of you, by chance, even students at Vienna university?

I'm currently looking for a new place to live and somehow, everything German seems dull.

If you know the city, maybe you can give me some pointers about:

1. what's the uni like?
2. how are living cost and rent in the vicinity of the university?
3. how about the night-life? I assume a city of that magnitude has plenty of clubs and live-music, but asking won't hurt
4. is public transportation as convenient as in larger German cities?
5. are there "green" places, i. e. parks or gardens to hang out, especially near the water?

Basically, tell me everything you know about Vienna that's not related to its history.

Thanks,

K.

hi.

i grew up and still live in Vienna and am studying at university of Vienna.

the uni is great imo, i don't have any others to compare it to though. what are you planning to study? i can tell you more details about some of the faculties. they aren't all equally awesome of course.

Vienna is relatively expensive to live in, but probably not much more expensive than most German cities. i don't really live near uni, i would generally say most of those places would be rather expensive as the inner city has much higher rent for the most part.

night life is great, you'll find more than enough nice places to spend your nights at. i'm sure there's crazier places in the world, but Vienna is doing quite well compared to a lot of cities i've visited imo.

public transportation is awesome. you can get pretty much anywhere in Vienna faster than you could by car, especially in the inner city of course. it's not all that expensive either, especially if you're a student.

there are lots of green places in Vienna, much more so than in most cities actually. you'll find spots all over the city, also and very much so at and around uni buildings. since the Danube goes right through Vienna, there's also a lot of nice hangout spots at the water there as well as in many other places.

got any more questions? :D

Awesome, that was quick.

I'm planning on studying English and Latin (education), maybe music instead of Latin depending on how hard the entrance exams for the latter are. I'm getting more and more excited already.

i study English myself and i think it's great. that part of university (the campus of the "altes AKH"->ehemaliges Allgemeines Krankenhaus) is beautiful, you basically have a park in the middle of the university buildings. so fuckin awesome to hang around and chill in summer and go drink some punch in winter

Latin i can't really say much about, i don't know anybody that studies it tbh.

EDIT: music is in the same place as English though and from what i've heard is a really cool department too.

I have a couple of german friends who are studying in Vienna and I think that they all enjoy living there very much. I have visited them a couple of times(once last year and twice this year) and I could imagine myself living there, too.

If you are into electronic music there are a couple of unique and nice clubs with good booking like the Pratersauna or the Grelle Forelle. But there are also nice bars with good music and interesting decoration like the Donau. I enjoyed the night-life in Vienna a lot more than I do here in Munich.

During my stays we hung out in Parks a couple of times. We were in the big Prater Park, the smaller Burggarten and we even had barbecue near the Donau. I think Vienna can compete with other cities quite well in that sense. Of course the Donau is not as nice as the Isar in Munich.

Public Transportation is decent but the Underground isn't as wide spread as in other cities so you have to go by Tram a lot.
I want to be with those who share secret things or else alone.

Great, I prefer above ground transportation anyway.

I'm having a really hard time finding the prerequisites for Latin and music, what I found so far seems too good to be true (there are none).

I suppose renting a flat will be a bitch and a half, not to mention the paperwork involved, but I'm getting really excited already.

there not being any (aside from the obvious Matura/Abitur) seems quite likely tbh. it's the case for many fields of study in Austria, and a reason why many Germans study in Austria tbh. even for English all you need to do is pass a pretty easy test at university of Vienna itself (some people fail it but i don't see how, with your english judging by your posts on here you should pass easily).

I've been to Vienna one or two times, and although I think it's a beautiful and peaceful city, I also found it boring as fuck. It depends on where you're from I suppose.

That would be splendid.

I have had scores of 14 (A) each semester in my abitur and 13 (A-) in my final exams, yet for most German universities I need to take TOEFL-exams in the respective Bundesland. If the materials I pirated are any indication, passing the exams shouldn't be a problem, but taking them is time-consuming and costly.

In regard to music, you have to pass a test that involves high levels of sight-reading, listening exercises (recognizing intervals, chords, scales and melodies by ear), one instrument at intermediate level and one instrument at a more proficient level. If I could circumvent these tests and at the same time move to a lovely city where everyone has that adorable accent, I'd be highly elated.

Cheers mate, your input so far has been great.

I am pretty sure that you need 10 semester hours of latin as a requisite to study it, in fact I am certain.
And Vienna is as awesome as any big city but if you do not know anyone there or know nothing about it its like moving to Berlin and aimlessly walking the streets in search of the next bar, only finding one that sucks, and thinking that Berlin sucks haha.

See you on the streets

I put the music requirements in spoilers, and in German.
Also, the numbers on your matriculation certificate mean nothing, you just have to have passed it in Austria

Die Zulassungsprüfung besteht aus folgenden Prüfungsteilen:

I. Künstlerisches Hauptfach Instrument/ Gesang/ Chorleitung

II.

Gesang)

III. Musikhören/Musikkunde

a)Allgemeine Musiklehre (schriftlicher Test)

b)Gehörtest (schriftlicher Test)

c) Blattsingen, Kadenzspiel und einfache Liedbegleitung

IV. Musikalische Gruppenarbeit

Über die Zulassung wird nach Absolvierung aller Prüfungsteile entschieden.

To the nature of .. well.. many germans migrating to Vienna and no requirement for studying, your first year everything will be overcrowded at the Campus if you study english, that is not the case for latin and music though so you can find some comfort there.

While i don't live ther nor have ever lived there when i was there visiting my family i remember seeing some gorgeous parks, there was a tower tourist thing( i can't recall the name) and the cafe there had one of the best teas i've had in my life. And it overlooked a very gorgeous garden area and the Danube. Recalling that view brings me some good feelings of bliss actually

Edit: The Donauturm is the towers name

I was rather hoping the state of not knowing any place or person would not last indefinitely.

Things are getting serious, I'll have to inscribe myself next week and have to do so in person.

So I'll have about 10 hours time to get an impression of the city; does any resident have any suggestions as to what touristy stuff I could do between Westbahnhof and Universität?
