@Incze: A few days ago I saw an interview with Douglas Coupland in the newspaper (he's a Canadian author, kinda similar to Chuck Palahniuk I guess) about his upcoming art show or something and one of his pictures says "Refusing to use a mobile phone is merely passive aggression". Some pretty deep level shit right there! I probably am to some people. I think I even said I was testing them to see who would try and find me (so passive-aggressive). And you're right, life was normal before fancy phones because we did not have anything more efficient. And now we do. So we no longer have to sweat the small stuff. Unless you can't help it! Which leads me to....
@Fighter: From the same interview, Douglas Coupland is asked about the biggest changes of the 21st century and he says: "Too much information and too many choices. What you know is less important than knowing what you don't need to remember". Having the phone only amplifies all these things. You're even closer to your friends, the internet, the blogs, the stats, TL, reddit, facebook, the information. And it's true. I saw a lot more of my good friends in person because they wouldn't be having mini conversations with me all day.
Of course you can't take anyone's word as complete truth but these few things he said really did hit home.
Turns out this is exactly what I was gonna mention today and the comments went right along with it! So I think that having a phone is only a problem IF it was something that was kind of a problem already; i.e. Your mind is on the wrong things. "Why isn't she texting me back I hate her" vs "Hey which bar are you at" are both texts/information, one being (in this case) a good attitude, the other being pretty sour.
So for some people, this is not a problem and never will be. I imagine this works for people who have less free time than someone like me, an extremely part-time student and part of the MSN generation. When you have a job, a girlfriend, social commitments, who has time to wonder why betty birdhouse didn't text you about the party. You're probably hanging out with your best friends that weekend because you planned it already. So I have some work to do on that still, need to find some equilibrium somewhere in there. It's my choice to be distracted by a phone, my choice to let the little things my so-so friends do or don't do get to me. Thanks for commenting eh, it's cool to see this stuff all weave together.
