Reflections: A Look back at Kingdom Hearts

I recently thought of looking at a couple of older games & talking about my experience with them. So every Wednesday I will be doing a look back at an older title. These can range from early current gen, all the way back the Sega Genesis days.

Today the topic is on the original Kingdom Hearts.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, the original is my favorite of the series. Below are several reasons as to why I love the game so much:

-It tried to do something very different and interesting. Mixing up Disney & Final Fantasy together in this brand new original world was a concept that was certainly not easy to pull off.

-The worlds of the game felt very interesting and well knotted. My personal favorites were Agrabah, Deep Jungle, & Traverse Town. I still play the Traverse Town theme all the time. It's brilliant.

-Combat at the time was kind of a new take for Square-Enix (Squaresoft at the time). It moved away from the traditional turn-based RPG system to a much more action-based one. This was pulled off pretty well and ,in my opinion, was at times better than KH2 and beyond.

-The story had a lot of interesting things to explore. Things like the Ansem reports were pretty great reads.

All in all, I just loved the direction behind the original. It was clearly very ambition and its success spanned a massive franchise that is still adored by many.

I think Kingdom Hearts is still one of my favorite games. I wasn't too in love with the combat, or flying from planet to planet, and really didn't love the disney characters or care that you had goofy and donald with you. It immersed me entirely, however, and when I played I was completely intertwined with the story and the emotions it produced from me. And the music was amazing.

My favorite part of the series was in KH2 at the beginning when you're playing as Roxas in another dimension but then you eventually find out that Roxas and his friends and his world doesn't exist, and that he's a heartless or something (because Sora is Roxas backwards). The graphics and story were engrossing. The whole formula of 2 guys and 1 girl thing is kind of old though (think Naruto).

The first part of KH2 was your favorite? Thats like the opposite for me, the first part of KH2 with Roxas was like my least favorite part of the series, lol. I wanted to play Sora and mash triangle and kill stuff, but instead had to play as this new kid, and not kill things.

Aww I actually liked it. To this day I still have nostalgic memories about that part too. For instance the part where they're all sitting on the clock tower and eating sea salt popsicles, watching the sunset... sometimes I get these nostalgic feelings where I'll stare off into the distance and just kind of reminisce on the past, ponder the present, and wonder at the future. Kingdom Hearts definitely reminds me of those feelings, and is the cause of those feelings as well.

The popsicle part is very memorable for me as well
