Thinking about quitting sc2 again

I should quit sc2. I got back into it when I got a new computer because my old pc would always lag. I took a good year off. I used to be top 500 masters, but now I'm stuck at #1 diamond with 457 points. It's probably like top 50 diamond on na server. My mechanics are very slow to come back. I started at gold since I started going random, but I quickly switched back to zerg. It'd be nice to push for gm, but that doesn't seem like a viable option right now without an insane amount of work.

I have at least 500 games this season, but I'd say at least 300 of them on ladder are when I was upper diamond. I have so many games stuck at the top of diamond now. My mechanics are very slow to come back. I remember I used to rarely miss an inject zvz since that was death with the old metagame being roach vs roach. I miss injects all the time now. My understanding of the game has gone down a lot. Despite watching streams, vods, and reps I still feel pretty lost. I have a lot of games where I'm ahead in econ, but I lose because of unit comp and army control. TLO vs Oz game 2 on daybreak in the nasl reminds me of a lot of my games where I feel pretty far ahead then I still lose.

I have an addictive personality, and I don't like focusing time on something if it's going to take more work than what is realistic to do to get to the top. If there was more money in sc2 it'd be more viable, but it's insanely easier to make money doing other things. Even if I made it to gm I probably wouldn't be making minimum wage. I would definitely play sc2 if I could get by, but that doesn't seem very realistic.

I started playing a ton of sc2 after black friday happened for poker. For those of you who don't play poker, that was pretty much doomsday for online american poker players. I stopped playing sc2 and started playing poker again the following oct after I realized that poker wasn't going away and there were still online sites accepting american players.

I enjoy sc2 more than anything else, but I keep asking myself what the end result is. It takes a ton of time to get into gm. It's probably time I quit sc2 cold turkey again, don't even play it when hots comes out. I can focus on poker again, and I'll have more time to do other healthier things like playing basketball, going outside more, and playing guitar.

Thoughts?

you don't have to play eighter 24/7 or nothing at all... how about playing it just ocassionally, when you really want to.
Anyways if you can't do that then yes it may be best to quit totally.
If you like Basketball, Poker, Guitar, etc. more then sure do it

SC2 is probably a lot like playing guitar. Learning a new chord would be like learning a new build order. Jamming in the garage with a few buddies would be the equivalent of playing team games with a few friends. The fun you get from it is related to how good you think you have to be. If you're not going to find the end result worth the journey don't bother.

I wrote something really long, but as you can see, I deleted everything.

You say you enjoy sc2 more than anything else, but are not ready to put in the hours to reach pro-level. Quit. Uninstall.

I used to be a "pro" player (it was a game that was going nowhere, but I was a top tier player, hence "") I paid my rent by playing. But it wasn't enough of an ROI. So I quit, made more money through other means, played very casually up until August. I noticed that even casual playing is "corrupting" my mind, I ended up uninstalling everything. I feel much better now. My childhood dream of becoming a doctor came back and I'm now studying hard to make it to med school, I'm playing my guitar again (fuck yeah), learning a new language etc... All the things I couldn't do because I had thoughts of a new build, new strat w/e.... running through my head even when I wasn't playing.

I see some of myself in what you wrote, and although my post probably isn't well articulated and I feel like I haven't fully expressed how I feel about your/my situation, my bottom line is this: go cold turkey. You'll be happier.

--- I don't resent progamers nor progaming, despite what I said. The truth is, even if you get good, you need to become popular to get into a good team. There were a ton of good players in the game that I played that were overlooked by the premier teams. And after two years, they're still in shitty teams.

If the pros were good and popular enough to make it to the highest level, more power to them.

It's not because you don't want to sacrifice your life for sc2 that you have to uninstall the game completely. I payed 49€ to get the game (through Amazon) at the release, i played 2k2 games since then and i'm still like platinum/very low diamond level. I just don't care because i don't want to be super good or anything, i just play the game with friends or some ladder games from time to time, at least trying to not have any bonus pool at the end of a season. Well worth the 50 bucks It's not like i don't want to be good but i have other things to do and it's not possible for me to sacrifice other games i like to play with friends or activities i like to do on my own in order to be better. I might reach higher leagues with time and some weeks of playing much more (it happens from time to time) but it will not be fast.

If your mindset is to be the best of the best and trying to be pro then you just have to quit everything you are doing and play this game 10 hours a day. If you can't just play "casually" then you might want to uninstall and just quit the game if you don't find entertainment playing one or two games from time to time.

I have a really hard time getting into guitar again because I am mechanically horrible with respect to what i used to be able to do. It has always inhibited me getting back into playing music which i guess it kind of sad.

Maybe just playing some guitar (sc2) to relax and not to be the best around would be a good idea. I try not to take sc2 too seriously (being competetive this is pretty tough) and still manage to have fun but I guess that would depend on your personality type

Do it man, I quit and my life is ten times better now. I got a job, my GPA went up 2 points, have like three girlfriends now.

Not really, but I did quit SC2 and I am happy about it. Quit SC2 and play basketball and guitar, I honestly think those are much better hobbies.
I can only play starcraft when I am shit canned. IPXZERG is a god.

My advice is to just play for fun. No need to quit unless you are a pro. Competition is healthy and you can still play casually. If you feel raged when you lose a match then watch the replay, realize what went wrong or where you lost the upper hand and play the next one if your up for it. It really is a beautiful game.

If you aren't having fun playing then stop playing, return to the game when you can enjoy it again

I woke up today and before even reading any replies it felt right to quit sc2. It's pretty much impossible for me to try to play sc2 casually. I thought I could do it when I started playing again a month ago. The posts by JC and rotodyne confirmed what I probably know in the back of my head. The people talking on chanmanv's climbing the ladder, and the old posts in the thread how much do pros make paint a picture of the reality of being a pro gamer. I just uninstalled sc2 and I feel much better. I need to start reading and doing things that are more productive again. I feel like I dropped a huge weight I was carrying.

You shouldn't be playing SC2 to make money... that is a fool's errand.

SC2 is a computer game, something fun.

If you want to earn money, I suggest a job/college/business/investing/poker/etc.

Sounds like you made the right decision.

At the end of the day, it is just a game. Good luck, man, in all you do.

You were top 500 masters. You took a year off. You are no longer masters

Answer yourself honestly here

You took a year off from starcraft. Did you just expect to be as good as you used to be after a whole year off?

How muxh do you think the esports community has grown within the past year, adding countless new talented players and expanding competiton to the mix?

People are better, but I am having a much harder time coming back to sc2 now than when I did before. I quit after phase 1 of beta and didn't even buy the game and play again until the fall after it was released. I had a much easier time picking the game back up then even though I did hit a plateau at top diamond just like now. The only thing is now my mechanics just aren't there anymore. That has nothing to do with the level of skill increasing. Plus I'm going to be turning 26 soon, and it just doesn't make sense to dump a ton of time into sc2. I love playing the game, but it hinders my overall happiness level because I neglect other things like reading and going outside more often.

I'm not bitching because I'm stuck at diamond. I was stuck at diamond before after my first break from the game. It's about the fact that even if I get on a pro team and/or into gm I would probably still be making less than minimum wage. JH made it to where I want to go and it sounds like I'd come to the same conclusion he did. It's really disheartening when I watch someone awesome stream like snute and they have less than 200 viewers.

I have to admit I still want to play sc2 today, but I'm already way more productive today. I ran a ton of errands and I'm finally getting around to converting and uploading chanmanv's climbing the ladder series in mp3 that I should have done a week ago. I wouldn't have the time for that if I was playing 20 ladder games and watching streams and reps. This is in addition to having a job. I don't know how chanmanv has enough time to do climbing the ladder and pro corner while having a family and a job.

I agree with this guy. I tried to play Brood War competitively with Terran, but then I realize that I'm old as shit (25).

Now I just play SC2 casually in the platinum league as random. I beat the occasional diamond player so I'm content.

no and no. When I play I like to put in at least 20 games a day and still watch vods and reps as well as my own replays. It ends up being 7-9 hours probably.

That's way too much Starcraft. Do you have a job or go to school or something? 7-9 hours is quite a lot.

Yeah I have a job. I'm much more relaxed since I uninstalled sc2. =)
