Is there any RTS games people would recommend obviously besides StarCraft 2. I like old school & new school RTS . I have played WarCraft III & loved it but I would like an RTS that has a good depthful campaign that I could play through. Any recommendations would be much appreciated also I would like for it to be around or under the 30-40$ mark. But if not that's okay.
I do not know what to do.

Download the original C&C series

edit: It was free somewhere, but i guess EA went back to charging $19.99 for the first decade of teh series.

Supreme Commander for a different take on it.
A custom lobby and community has been set up at www.faforever.com. We have our own tournaments, streams, etc. People are, generally, nice.
I will reduce you to a series of numbers.

I really enjoy the Total War series (especially Medieval 2) but it's a hybrid system. It has a Civilization-like map overview where you build up your cities and armies and attack and defend, but when it comes time for the battles it switches to an RTS style gameplay with you commanding large armies. I quite enjoy the setting and both types of gameplay.

Age of Empires II is a must, but you could try the Settlers series if you like more gestion oriented RTS.
My old time favorites remain Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, such good games where you basically build your own castle and defend it

Depends on what you're looking for.

If you like cold war history and realism, I'd recommend Wargame : European Escalation or World In Conflict.
No base management, focused on units management (a shitload of types and characteristics in Wargame) and reinforcement.

If you're looking for something innovative, maybe R.U.S.E. and it's cards system which is interesting, with a decent campaign. (The multi is, however, really "one build per faction", and thus not that much interesting...)

If you like strategy at a world level (or so), I'd say the Total War games (my favorites are Medieval 2 and Shogun 2), though the so called "Campaigns" aren't that much scenarised...

The most classic and still play-able (but that's a personnal opinion) : Red Alert 2 (and if you really like it, the Expansion Yuri's revenge, while not being a must have, interesting). You can even go back to Red Alert 1, but it's hard to get used to the old graphics (though I loved it, I can't play it anymore ^^)

Command & Conquer 3 is quite good also, C&C 4 must be avoided at all cost :D

Finally, if you like squad systems, and the Warhammer 40k licence, you can get any of the Dawn of War.
The first one and it's expansions are really good, centered, involving base management, and squads of unit (rather than units alone).
Dawn Of War 2 : no bases, focused on few squads with more management like in-depth equipement management, character sheets, abilities, etc. More "tactic", less "strategy" i would say.

I don't really have other games in mind right now.

Of course, I suggest you read tests about these to know if that's exaclty what you're looking for ^_^

The stronghold games are soo good, crusader is the best imo. Ive spent countless hours in that game just building huge castles and cities. The campaigns are pretty good too. Stronghold deluxe only has campaigns (alot of campaigns) but no standard matches so to say.
That's the 2nd time in a week I've seen someone sig a quote from this GD and I have never witnessed a sig quote happen in my TL history ever before. -Najda

Ruse

The Total war games are on Steam sale this weekend and they're all pretty good. Standouts are the Shogun and Rome games.

Company of heroes, by far.

Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology are classics, of course, but they are getting a bit dated.

World in Conflict is amazingly fun for such a simple concept. Very much new-school. No bases, small unit numbers, most interaction is via call-ins.

Age of empire, Age of Mythology and Stronghold are some good, old, cheep ones.
Also the old Red alerts are quite good.

But you need people to play with quite frankly, not sure how many are left playing those games tho i hear its quite a lot for AOE 1/2.
A good strategy means leaving your opponent room to make mistakes

My favourite non-blizzard RTS was always Dawn of War, didn't like DoW 2 though. Rome: Total War is $1 on steam at the moment, an absolute steal. One of the best games I've ever played, with graphics that are still good today even though its 2004 game.

Never liked CoHmuch for some reason too slow paced

Age of mythology and Empires

THere was a really good warhammer 40k RTS too which I dont know the name of, it's a shame really.

Rise of Legends / Nations also really good

Warcraft 2/3 Starcraft 1/2 are both good for obvious reasons

Red Alert 1 and 2 are both incredibly good, I can also recommend the third one too but other people would speak against me
