A custom lobby and community has been set up at www.faforever.com. We have our own tournaments, streams, etc. People are, generally, nice.

My old time favorites remain Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, such good games where you basically build your own castle and defend it ![]()

If you like cold war history and realism, I'd recommend Wargame : European Escalation or World In Conflict. No base management, focused on units management (a shitload of types and characteristics in Wargame) and reinforcement. If you're looking for something innovative, maybe R.U.S.E. and it's cards system which is interesting, with a decent campaign. (The multi is, however, really "one build per faction", and thus not that much interesting...) If you like strategy at a world level (or so), I'd say the Total War games (my favorites are Medieval 2 and Shogun 2), though the so called "Campaigns" aren't that much scenarised... The most classic and still play-able (but that's a personnal opinion) : Red Alert 2 (and if you really like it, the Expansion Yuri's revenge, while not being a must have, interesting). You can even go back to Red Alert 1, but it's hard to get used to the old graphics (though I loved it, I can't play it anymore ^^) Command & Conquer 3 is quite good also, C&C 4 must be avoided at all cost :D Finally, if you like squad systems, and the Warhammer 40k licence, you can get any of the Dawn of War. The first one and it's expansions are really good, centered, involving base management, and squads of unit (rather than units alone). Dawn Of War 2 : no bases, focused on few squads with more management like in-depth equipement management, character sheets, abilities, etc. More "tactic", less "strategy" i would say. I don't really have other games in mind right now. Of course, I suggest you read tests about these to know if that's exaclty what you're looking for ^_^

Company of Heroes World in Conflict Ruse The Total war games are on Steam sale this weekend and they're all pretty good. Standouts are the Shogun and Rome games. Dawn of war has fricken Space Marines with chainswords.

Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology are classics, of course, but they are getting a bit dated. World in Conflict is amazingly fun for such a simple concept. Very much new-school. No bases, small unit numbers, most interaction is via call-ins.

too slow pacedAge of mythology and Empires THere was a really good warhammer 40k RTS too which I dont know the name of, it's a shame really. Rise of Legends / Nations also really good Warcraft 2/3 Starcraft 1/2 are both good for obvious reasons Red Alert 1 and 2 are both incredibly good, I can also recommend the third one too but other people would speak against me
