So this year has been very stressful for my household. My apartment had an infestation of bed bugs (i speculate someone brought a couple in side because i do live in New York City) and we had to throw out our beds and many unnecessary things that ate up space as well as our wooden furniture. So we pack up our valuables in bags and keep them piled in the center of our bedroom. This procedure would take weeks to cleanse our home and i still believe its not cleansed yet. We still left everything in bags because as we were cleaning, I noticed many many manymanyamynassamdnasmfnasmmany problems with our apartment. To me, this situation was a pretty good reason to start fixing all of little cracks and faults in our apartment.
I suggested moving somewhere close by because my location is really convenient for everyone in the family but we had already paid ahead of time. I had already wanted to move because my apartment is just total shit. We have cockroaches everywhere, its kinda small and subconsciously i took into account the poor conditions of my apartment (some lights dont work, stoves are broken, etc.)
We also removed the flooring stickers that my mom and dad spent many hours covering up our old wooden floor because it was rather dirty and there were holes on the edges of the walls. Carpet didn't work: i was allergic to it. Now you may ask, why wasn't this consoled with the apartment manager? Well, my mom had just gotten to the united states and neither of them were fluent in English. When apartment ownership had changed 9 years ago (still under the same ownership), her English did not improve much and the floors were already covered up because the apartment did not help them. When we peeled off the floorings (multiple flooring..), some of the wood were rotting so we asked them to help us with the flooring but the apartment refuses to help us with that and accuses my parents of damaging their property. Honestly i don't mind because we can work around that by reflooring it ourselves or hiring people to do it.
OK. but they wont even help us with the holes and cracks that are everywhere. So far, what have they fixed? they gave us a brand new smoke alarm, fixed 1 light, added a door bell and replaced our door handle. Sounds nice but this took them about 10 weeks.. Our main problems would be the fact that there are holes everywhere and that is no exaggeration. As we cleaned up, we found holes we werent even aware of. Some of our doors are still broken (closet doors and bedroom door). And the manager went on vacation telling us to throw out more stuff. We had thrown out so much, it just looks like a lot because all that are in the bag are clothing and books which we cant really put on the shelves that we still need to move and in the closets that still need to be cleaned.
K. so their response is why we did not ask beforehand? We did. We just gave up because they didnt listen.
Writing this rant, i just kinda feel i should just move, is it even worth it to fix up my apartment?

if you are sexually active, yes
if you are not, then no

if you are not, then no As much as I want to disagree with this, its pretty true. If you plan on bringing a girl to your apartment (1st impressions are everything) then you should have it spick and span. If you plan on gtfo-ing pretty soon and you don't really care till then, then don't go crazy and just bide your time.

There are laws about this. Google up or find a free lawyer. Your landlord is legally required to fix things or you can stop paying rent. Or move.

I reside in NYC, some of my relatives had issues with bed bugs recently too. It doesn't sound plausible but the conditions you're describing warrants legal action.
edit: And roaches, I'm used to them. The giant buggers in the summer are least of my worries compared to the little ones that come in hordes. I would love to live in a house that doesn't have pest issues, I'll gladly trade it for the occasional centipede instead.

Yeah we were thinking about that but we arent too sure what to do because we fear that they will use the argument that we "damaged" their property with our flooring (it was sticker so normally, it made the wood sticky but we are in the process of removing the stickiness)

consult a lawyer before going that route. if you kick your door off its hinges, your landlord isnt required to fix (or at least not required to pay for it). if normal wear and tear leads to something breaking, it is a totally different story.
you guys peeling up the flooring could also be in violation of your lease or something. even if it isnt, it opens the door to exactly what your landlord is doing now: accusing you guys of screwing it up either by breaking something, or maybe the wood rotting by you guys being negligent and not reporting a leak or god knows what.
bottom line is that they have your deposit, it probably is a good chunk of change because you are in nyc, and you dont wanna lose that and possibly be on the hook for more. dont google; find a lawyer. you can probably get a free consultation first somewhere.
