I wrote an article about MLG, and I was priviliged enough to get the ESV boss' thoughts about the MLG map pool, however the article had to be cut, and this was unfortunately one of those parts, but I felt he had very many good points, so here it is, unedited for your pleasure:

As usual MLG's map pool is an embarrassment for modern Starcraft II. Maps like Tal'Darim Altar, Shakuras Plaeatu, and Metropolis (the most imbalanced TvZ map of all time) have no place in competitive play anymore.
MLG uses the argument that they have an open bracket and want to keep it "out of the box" experience. Which is weird since they already use non-ladder maps every tournament. Also why are you catering to the random Platinum/Diamond/Low Masters players who are in the open bracket? How many of them have ever made the finals? 0. Semi-finals? 0. Round of 8? 0. Round of 16? 0. Championship Bracket at all? 0. Have ever even qualified for an Arena? 0. If the system is designed to make it so the average joe can do well, then it has failed in spectacular fashion as those players have never even done well ONE TIME in an MLG.

For an organization that prides itself on being the pinnacle of E-Sports competition, they spend an awful large amount of time catering to players who are not the pinnacle of E-Sports competition, and ARE NOT the players that people tune into see. They want to see players like HuK, IdrA, NesTea, MvP, TaeJa, not Nicoras & Ailuj. I understand practicing on new maps takes more effort than ladder, but as many pros will tell you as is, ladder is not quality practice. Add in the fact with the explosion of Starcraft II's popularity that any Top 200 player in the world will be on a professional team with proper practice partners, all of a sudden the "I can't learn the maps unless they are on ladder" excuse is not really relevant.

The premier league of the entire NA continent needs to stand up and say "NO! You WILL practice your ass off for our tournament or you will fail." Period. It will FORCE players to train in more proper ways, and only help grow the talent of the NA scene long term.
The players want it, the fans want it, the teams want it, basically EVERYONE aside for MLG Tournament Ops/MLG want an updated and fresh map pool, so what's the problem here?

I'd like this blog if it suggested some better maps. Would be good if all tournaments had a year long set of maps created in house. That way the major tournaments would all feel different but the players would have relative consistency in their map pool

GSL whirlwind would be a good map for the pool for starters.

This is just me posting something that ESV diamond said in an article I wrote, so I don't want to put in my thoughts and I can't put in his thoughts, as I don't know what maps he like^^

If you ask him on twitter (@ESVDiamon) he will probably tell you ^_^

Is everything after the first paragraph a direct quote from Diamond? Sorta hard to tell.

Ah apologies, I thought the entirety of it was diamond

Still would have been good if he'd suggested maps in the interview ^^

Sure he could suggest some better maps right now, but that doesn't solve the problem in 6 months time when those maps are now verging on stale. MLG should invest in some kind of map rotation/map architect team.

What? How many maps have as bad a win rate as TvZ on Metro? TDA is unplayable ZvZ and PvP. Shakuras not rly relevant anymore since this quote was before they updated their map pool.

Also what Plexa said.

It would be kind of cool if there was some universal map architect organisation, because at the moment there is no standard and that makes it kind of hard for players to practice for certain maps (for example, if you were going to play an MLG, then a week later a GSL, which map pool do you practice for?)

There's a huge difference between knowing the map pool in gsl and mlg. In gsl you prepare for a predesignated opponents on a pre designated map, like sniping in team games. Mlg doesn't have that so as long as mlg provides balanced maps it shouldn't be an issue of map preparation.

That's basically what I said after the first sentence.

The thing is there's a big difference between just Kespa doing it and everyone else doing it. In the GSL and OSL the players have a few weeks to prepare for certain opponents and maps, but with an MLG it's just over the weekend and you don't know who you will be facing past the group stage.

We need a global governing body for maps for a long time now. It's all unorganized bullshit and map rotation (and many map pools) are a joke.
Tournaments outside of Korea frankly don't seem to care or understand the importance of maps/map pools and the community doesn't press the issue enough at all.

People keep saying that like it's ever going to happen. It's not, the leagues HATE doing ANYTHING the same as other leagues and even more hate talking to each other or working with each other on ANYTHING. There needs to be a solution that does not rely on one.

They are companies. The other companies are competitors. Basic business.
