Hey there,
after what feels forever, I finally decided to pick up the game "Skyrim" because it makes a huge splash everywhere, so I want to try it out myself. Actually, I am not big into role playing games at all, I play a little bit of SC2 obviously and other than that mostly FPS and 3rd person shooters.
I downloaded the official HD textures and would like to have some tips on which mods to get. I know that there is the huge Skyrim thread, and people talk a lot about mods, but everyone suggests something different.
A short info on my system: CPU: i5-2400 RAM: 4 GB GPU: GTX 480 overclocked
What I want: I do not want to install a dozend mods who change minor things. I want just a few, that makes the gaming experience better and maybe better looking. I think I am fine with the vanilla gameplay I am a noob in RPGs, so please, leave me your suggestions which mods to get and why. Thanks guys :-)

Go to skyrim nexus and install the nexus mod manager and BOSS. Both of those things will make your modding life a TON easier. Use the mod manager to install Skyrim Redone aka SkyRe. If you want to be a vampire or something, there are good mods to improve that.

"makes the gaming experience better"
there are many many many that will do that from adding in quests to additions that should of really been in the game from the start

I can list a few that are nice: SkyUI changes the menus to not be like they are from a console game, Categorized Favorites Menu does similar to the favorite items/spells system, and A Quality World Map - With Roads makes the in-game map so much more useful.

Definitely get the ones the poster above me recommended. All 3 of them are pretty much a must.
Also, either one of SkyRe or ACE would be a great choice for a lot of fixes to the very boring vanilla perk trees. I use ACE, because SkyRe modifies a lot of things and it is incompatible with many many other mods.
If you're planning on a magey character get a spell pack. The best reviewed ones currently are Phenderix, Apocalypse and Midas. I prefer Apocalypse.
If you're planning on a sneaky character, get Path of Shadows, as sneaking with 100 skill in the vanilla game is ridiculous (you can stand right in front of someone and they won't notice) and if you'd like, Sneak Tools, which is another awesome mod.
There are tons of other mods which greatly improve the quality of the game, depening in what you want. If you want a really life-like game install some weather mods, the lanterns of skyrim mod, a nightsky mod and tons of others.
There are many weapon and armor mods as well, since the original ones are pretty bland and way too few of them (JaySUS is my favourite weapon mod)
Seriously, there are many mods out there that greatly enhance the experience. If you have some issue with skyrim there's a 99% chance a mod fixes that. I use like 40 or 50 mods, some smaller others bigger and I really couldn't play without most of them now.

Aside from the whole bunch of standard must have mods there is one that makes horse travel way better. It's called 'convenient horses'. It for instance gives you a power that lets you summon your horse, its really well done too. You blow a horn, then for a second the screen goes black and then *poof* youre on your horse. Anyways I really like it, without it I didnt use horses at all.

You definitely should try SkyRe or Requiem for old school players. I like the latter the best.
Don't play Vanilla Skyrim at all. Its for very very casual people who like to just hit stuff with swords.
