Hi Teamliquid!
This is my first post on here, and I'm going to ask you guys for some advice. I've always been a competitive person, and even more so when it comes to games. I have played a lot of games competitively, but I've never been able to quite "get" RTS games. I'm sure that if I just sat down and took the time, I could definitely learn the basics and begin to try and be competitive, but that's where my dilemma begins.
See, even though I don't really play SC2, I watch almost all of the major tournaments and try to keep up on the competitive scene. Watching all these amazing players dissuades me from ever playing the game, because when I do something, I want to strive to be at a higher level, but I feel that I could just never compete at a level like HuK, Stephano, Bomber etc.
So, I come to TL to ask for some guidance. Should I try to improve at SC2? Is it too late to get into the game to be able to compete at the higher level? Should I just stay in my spectator position or is it worth it for every gamer to give SC2 a try?
I've always loved esports, and I love the SC2 community. Should I try to get into the esports side of SC2, and what tips do you have for a player striving to be on a competitive level?
Thank you for reading and thanks everyone for any thoughts you have. I hope this post doesn't come off as arrogant; I just really want some opinions and guidance, because this is very important to me and I don't want to make the wrong choice.
Once again, thanks for reading ^^

The players you see doing all that amazing crap are as good as they are because they practice all day long for years. There is no way around that immutable fact. Thus, you should not try to be a pro unless you are already doing decently as an amateur, because if it turns out that you don't have the talent or something similar, then congratulations, you have just wasted a year of your life, maybe more. Test the waters before you actually dive in. Play the game, get short term goals and complete them for the time being, and if it turns out you're good, then go for it. As for being too late or any similar doubts, it's never too late. Starcraft is only getting bigger, and although the players are getting better, it's not impossible to catch up. If it was impossible to catch up, IdrA would be the king of zerg at the moment.

What harm is there in trying. Even if you don't get amazing at it, its still a fun game to play. Plus its not too late for people to compete at a high level. There's still 2 expansions left, SC2 will be around for a while.

Not a progamer or anyone of importance to the scene but why don't you just try. If you haven't even tried out the game, then you won't even know how much you like the game.
you can always try it out and repeat until you get better and reach your best or just quit when you don't want to do it anymore
But I would recommend sitting down and playing the game, you would learn to see the game differently other than how the casters put it. You get to know the game. Plus it's fun and competitive even if it isn't the highest level of all

You don't have to play the game if you don't want to. It sounds like you have some ladder anxiety, its nothing unnatural. If you do a search here on TL you'll see a gazillion threads about it.
Personally, I was a pure spectator of SC2 for the first year of release. Eventually I caved and I am low diamond right now. Sometimes I feel like playing, sometimes I feel like watching. It cycles every few months.
Just do whatever you find most fun. You don't want to force yourself to do just one thing and burn yourself out completely upon the game.
I don't think it's too late to get in as a player. Especially with the HOTS beta on the horizon, and another expansion after that one. Everyone is going to have to relearn the game, including the pros who have been playing full-time since release. By starting now you can develop your mechanics for HOTS release, and have a big step up on people who will come back or start fresh with HOTS.

No way, never too late! I think you'd have a lot of fun playing the game and also earn a new respect for the really good players. Some of the everyday things they do are surprisingly hard to do in an actual game. Regardless of whatever skill you are when you do play, you can always get better if you'd like to (just takes hard work and practice!) and its always fun! People get way too tied up with the league symbol or portrait and saying OMG I've got to be X league or else it's just not fun. If you really want to be a starcraft professional you need to ask yourself: "Is this something that I'm willing to do for 6+ hours everyday?" Buy a copy and see if you can actually go 2 weeks playing that much. It's hard. Really hard. If you can do that, you can be a professional gamer if you can keep that up for long enough. ANYONE playing 6-10 hours per day, 6-7 days a week for 6 months to a year will be top masters. The only question really is, do you have the motivation, drive and support system to make it happen?
