...Silver league!
Woo hoo! I was finally promoted to Silver league last night. It was a pretty good feeling, but my work is not yet done. I don't know how I'm going to manage to get up to Gold league before the lock, but I have to try. I'm pretty busy from here until next week, and I think next week is the cut-off when they lock it.
Either way I've played 8 games from the 21st through yesterday, and I won 5 of them.
Most of them were pretty standard, although now I've switched to playing Random until I can get the Reaper portrait. I've mostly ended up as Zerg anyway. The games themselves have been either me remembering to macro, or me losing mid-game because I completely forgot to spend all the minerals and gas that I've accumulated through a greedy economy. I've lost a few games where I was just overly greedy and forgot to make units or defenses.
However, there is one game that really sticks out in my mind. A game that I had the most satisfaction playing of any game that I've played in recent memory (I'll post the replay when I get home.) I was Terran (which I think I will now main, because the match was so fun) and my opponent was Protoss. Things were pretty standard, I made a couple rax, one factory and a starport and started throwing together an army of MMM. He pushed early, but I fought it off despite thinking that I was dead. Ghosts were soon added to my little bio-ball, and I was ready to make a push. The only problem was that he had snuck DTs into my base and hurt my economy pretty badly. It looked like I was going to have to go all in with what I had. Somehow our armies ended up going around each-other and we base traded. Unfortunately his probes got around my army too, and he started building bases elsewhere. It became like a weird game of cat and mouse where all I had was half of my bio-ball left with a couple grounded vikes and some medivacs -- but most importantly I had 3 ghosts. I had one rax lifted into the bottom left corner and one rax lifted into the top left corner. I was super nervous and paid attention to any kind of movement on my screen -- I found his first 'expo.' It was something that had obviously just started, and as I got there he was warping in some stalkers. EMP, stim, focus fire and I didn't lose anything. That base went up in flames. However as I was moving I noticed a ripple on the screen and knew my timing had to be precise -- I EMPed and revealed a DT to kill, but didn't get them all and after another EMP and kill he still had more. I quickly picked up my units and started flying around looking for where he could have another base. After a while I found it on the left side of the map...unfortunately this time he had cannons. I manoeuvred around to the bottom of the base and unloaded on his probes, then his nexus. He was being revealed this time so I knew I had him. I just had to be careful not to get caught by his DTs. I knew it was coming -- as soon as I saw the blur there was the familiar blast of the EMP and then the DT going up in a burst of energy. After that it was just some EMPing and stimming against the remaining cannons.

You have been promoted to Silver League!
I don't know if I've ever felt so satisfied winning a match.

Congratulations. I suggest playing thor heavy mech plus scvs with autorepair, in my opinion autorepair is the single most imbalanced thing if you consider effectiveness to mechanics needed.

And then you come to diamond, decide to do something else and fall back to gold again. Rofl
This is like the worst advice ever if you want to get better.

Thor builds are viable in diamond as well, you just need to become better at scouting and anticipating what your opponent is doing in order to decide when and how commited you apply pressure. And since the act of applying pressure itself taxes your economy (as you pull scvs to autorepair), you should better know damn well what you are doing. Besides, thors are awesome.

Thor builds are easily scouted and easily countered, while being pretty hard for terran to transition out of, once you've built a certain number of thors, you're quite heavily commited. I'd be surprised if it worked to any decent degree in diamond, especially against zergs who hardcounter it with banelings and roaches.

Thanks guys! I was pretty happy, especially with the game that caused the promotion. That was a real fun one.
Personally I'm pretty partial to developing the air builds. I know they're not as common, and I like to at least think I can maybe innovate a bit. Bashees are pretty awesome and having Vikes is always good.
That said there's no single style that I want to bog myself down with. I want to get adept at getting my opening down pretty pat, but I want to be flexible in terms of my composition and playstyle. I don't think there's a single game style that will be effective against every other style so it's important to be fluid and ever evolving.
Cheers.

On the ladder, especially on the lower leagues, the easiest way to get promoted is to find a really straight forward build and stick with it. Then you are freed up to focus on refining the timing and getting your macro spot on. It's not "standard" but I did this with zealot/archon and got promoted from silver/platinum in a couple of weeks. In retrospect I wish I'd just stuck with a 3 gate/robo opening; much safer.
Mass thor is the worst advice I've ever heard. Except mass Raven.

Winning in those clutch tense situations feels great. Definitely one of those moments where you just wanna show whoever is around what just happened
