i know exactly how you feel
i am currently doing my undergraduate in the US and i am still constantly confused by this country
- random people striking conversations at bus stops - houses with like 10 people living in them (plus their pets and i would like add some dogs here are almost my size) - totally stoned people walking on the streets at night (drug consumption = death penalty in Singapore) - random white chicks trying to kick my ass while drunk - having to repeat certain terms in class because i forget i should be pronouncing my words properly here lol
and like you
my biggest gibe about this country
the food tastes horrible, everything tastes horrible
fastfood chicken / beef tastes like plastic, asian food feels so processed and tasteless and yet i am forking out $10 USD (the same amount = seudo-restaurant style dining in singapore
sigh 2 years to go

Singapore food is really fucking good, let me tell you that. Any dumb kid who thinks that Singapore food sucks is dead wrong. Nah, fuck that. Vastly prefer the food in the US. Being a Caucasian PR might cause some bias there. Finished a first year studying in the U.S., anyways, and never felt homesick - coming back to visit Singapore almost felt like leaving home to travel. I'll have to see if my mentality changes over the years, though. Good to read about experiences like yours. My POV might be biased because I don't live in a huge metropolitan city, but the food at where I am isn't worth raving over. Sure there's some good food, but I can find better in Singapore and find it for cheaper prices too. If I ate like that everyday, I'll be dead broke. Import a hawker centre over here and I'll be one happy man.
I never felt homesick for a few years. After a long while, I really felt the effects of long-term separation from friends and family. When I went back to Singapore about a month ago, I felt like a stranger in my own country. The crap ton of new buildings appearing doesn't help much too.
@wwiv: hahahaha. sigh 5 years to go~

The whole 'separation from friends and family' is somewhat moot to me because:
A) NS does that already. B) A lot of my friends are studying overseas anyways. C) I don't have a huge attachment to my parents.
The biggest 'discomforting' change, I guess, would be dealing with the very different social environment. As some mentioned, U.S. people are a lot more extroverted (and chaotic, I suppose) which I comparatively am not. That's a good thing, though - being put into a much more vibrant social environment is valuable education, as much so as my actual classes.

sigh 2 years to go Perhaps if you cooked better, then your food would taste better. The house with 10+ people is either a frat house, or a crack whore house. When you walk by the house, that would explain the totally stoned people at night. If you're mixing up prefixes in med school, that's a huge problem, so it's better to make sure you say it right, than kill some one. The random white chicks are probably from the crack whore house as well.
If you're living in the south, people will tend to be more friendly. This is probably why random people would strike up conversations at the bus stop. They might be trying to invite you over for a nice meal.

@Dfgj: Well the first two things apply to me too, but it kinda changed for me after spending soooo long overseas combined with the prospect of spending several more years like this.
@Nymphaceae: The way that many Singaporeans speak normally is very different compared to 'proper' English. If we spoke Singlish, as we call it, then nobody but Singaporeans/Malaysians would understand us. Some people can easily switch between proper English and Singlish, while others can't. For the former, switching still takes some effort.

This and the shitty food I hate the most about the US. Random people talking to you I have no problem with, but in the US they talk to you with some fake smile without caring in the slightest what you are saying to them. It's a weird phenomenon.
