So I haven't blogged in a while but I wanted to share with you guys a game that I just finished with a few other very talented people from my school. We spent the last two semesters working on it and just published it on the Google Play store last week (FOR FREEEEEEE (and no ads)).

The game is called Ninjas Don't Like Trains and is an action game for Android phones (at the moment the game can't be downloaded onto kindles or other tablet-esque devices, we are working on that :\).

In it, players control a ninja over-looking train tracks. Robot-trains known as "Robomotives" move across these tracks and the player needs to fling the ninja across the screen to destroy them. Just touch the ninja on-screen and drag to where you want him to go on the other side of the screen, and he will destroy any robots in his path (assuming he doesn't get hurt). You can only destroy robots if you hit their battery on their backside, and you will lose a life if you hit their sawblades (or other hazards such as fireballs or explosions from suicidal spiderbots that crawl on the cliffs).

There are 12 levels spread out across 3 different stages. On top of the normal enemy trains with saw blades, there are spiderbots that crawl on the wall and will activate a detonation that will hurt the ninja if they run into the ninja (the player can destroy these spiderbots if he lands on them from the other side). Also there are cannon-bots that shoot out fireballs in 4 different directions. The player needs to hit these bots 3 times to destroy them (once from the left, once from the right, and then 1 more time from any direction).

The fun in the game comes from trying to get high-scores. Each time you kill a robot, your combo multiplies. Each robot nets you 100 pts x your combo number (so if your combo is 5, you get 500 points). If you get hurt or move across the screen without hitting anything, your combo resets to 0. We were thinking about forcing players to reach certain scores to unlock the next level, but that would of taken a lot of extra time (new art, figuring out appropriate scores, etc) and I felt like the game isn't heavy enough on content to make it worth it, so all levels are available from the get-go.

Basically I started this game by myself last summer when I hated how all the games on android sucked and I wanted to play a good game on it. Since then there have been some good games on android phones, but still . I made a prototype by myself and later got some very talented people from my school (Georgia Tech) to help make it into a real game. There's a ton of gameplay ideas that we never got to implement, but I feel the game is still pretty fun as it is. I always like the sort of games that require some degree of physical skill and finesse, but also require you to think on your feet. I feel of all the games I've made so far, this comes closest to that sort of feeling I wanted to make for players.

Please let me know what you think! Also bare in mind that this is just a game made by a few students in their spare time, and not a super professional game or anything

And no, it won't be coming to iPhones. It cost a lot more money to publish it on iOS AND you need mac computers to write for their SDK (which none of us have) AND we would have to re-code the game from scratch, which we do not want to do.

I know no one ever plays smartphone games with sound on (I know I never do), but the sound in this game I think is pretty good (I think so at least ), and the spiderbot enemies have some good sound cues as well that make the game a little more complete gameplay-wise. So give it a try with sound if you get a chance

Oh by now I just feel sorry that no one is answering.
I am sure your game is awesome but unfortunately all my phone does is calling and taking crappy pictures. Good luck though :D

I haven't played it, but it looks great. Good job. Definitely a catching portfolio piece.

I downloaded it and played the first few levels. It actually really is fun (better than Angry Birds anyways). I think i will keep playing it.

Sounds a lot like "Ninjump" on the iphone, which I really enjoyed. Love to see projects like this actually get finished, and as spike mentioned, if nothing else it's a great piece to show off your body of work
