So, I'm finally playing on the ladder, which is strange. I got placed Bronze, shockingly, since I never ever practice the game, so while I understand a bit, I suck at application.

I placed as Terran, but after 4 TvT's, I decided to do something that involved less sleep, so I'm playing Zerg. I've now learned that I've been right to be supporting Gheed where Bronze level play is concerned. As it turns out, 25 APM is plenty to wreck people's faces. Remember to inject occasionally, make some drones, and expand, and people will inevitably decide your race is OP.

Mind you, in Bronze league, there's roughly six trillion and seven other things to worry about besides balance. You know, like saturating your main mineral line. Ever. In the course of 20 minutes. Stuff that counts as harassment in a higher level game is a cheesy deathblow in Bronze. I mean, 13 mutas in the main at the 15 minute mark shouldn't be lethal against a protoss who has 2 stargates up, should it? Oh, but he didn't make anything out of them. Pity. Zerg OP.

I've never really had any ladder fear, it's just boredom. Practicing has never seemed particularly interesting. At least until I realized that I was completely out of other games to play. So who knows, maybe I'll get promoted in a few days. In the meantime, check my stream if you see it go live, and make fun of my Bronze play. I don't mind.

So anyways, I've realized the secret to escaping Bronze league is simple. Play the fucking game a bit, have something vaguely resembling a plan on my way into the game, and make a whole lot of shit. Presto, instant wins. No idea how long it will take me to get my MMR out of negative numbers, but who cares, the league isn't important, as long as I enjoy the game. And I'll get better if I worry about playing the game more than I worry about the score screen.

Erm, I hope you were being sarcastic when you said you were shocked to be in bronze, because you said yourself "I suck."

Well, yes, I would have assumed the sarcasm was relatively obvious under the circumstances. Regardless of the difference in HOW I suck from the majority of people I play, I still suck.

It's mostly a difference in mindset. I've never practiced much, so I suck at mechanics, but I try to keep objective about my losses, and the fact that right now they mostly stem from failing to do rather basic shit.

That's as opposed to the people I play against, who mostly blame balance.

Yea,what you should do is just learn one single build and do it over and over again until it doesn't work anymore.
Than you learn a new build and so on for each matchup.Having a decently timed build up till like 34 supply can get you so far ahead in lower leagues its pretty amazing since everyone does random shit, gets supply blocked, etc. I suppose.

Right now I'm going with Day[9]s recent advice to worry less about food count and more about sets of things. Combining that with trying to get my mechanics working, like creep spread, overlord spread, and making drones.

As it turns out, though, it kinda helps that I haven't played in forever, since I never played online RTS when I was younger, and when I first picked up SC2 I gave myself some bad habits in Season1 from playing like I was a kid playing AoE2 offline again.

So now, minus bad habits, I watch the minimap more, click the minimap more, scroll less, and try to think more.

It seems to help.

This. I have tried to tell my friends this, over and over again. Some people just don't understand the fundamental concepts of RTS though. You said you have a basic understanding of the game, you just haven't practiced it. So I think that if you just keep playing, you can make it into gold/plat without much of a problem, as having a basic understanding is really something that most people lack at those levels.

Most likely. Right now, my losses seem to stem from either not droning enough, not teching enough, or getting all paranoid about not having enough shit to attack with.

God knows I watch enough SC2 that if I could apply a third of it, I'd be well above Bronze. But, my APM seems to be going up. Hopefully that means I'm doing something useful with enough of it that it means some of what I'm doing is useful stuff.

I do know I managed to hit with multi pronged agression in a game vs a Toss just now, mutas in the back, roach ling up the front. It didn't work, because I wasn't paying attention to my minimap and his DTs gutted my third and my gas at natural, so I suddenly couldn't reinforce worth a damn.

I'm also hoping my willingness to find my own fuckups in the games helps a lot, since sucking is imbalanced and makes me lose too much.

I honestly don't understand how people can be legit bronze level players. Getting into silver is as easy as A-moving a small army at nearly any point in the game, and it is pretty intuitive as to how you make the army.

Terran is regarded as the high apm, high stress race. I don't know why you would be feeling like falling asleep while playing it.

I'm tired of seeing T = easy statements when all of my friends who play random, and others who have tried off racing unanimously say that Terran is way more stressful than the other races.

It's the easiest to learn because it's the least luck-dependent and you can macro in all 3 matchups. It's hard to play at a high level though.

I don't understand how people can legitimately be so ignorant as to not comprehend that a healthy percentage of the player base is guaranteed to be in Bronze at any given time. Getting into Bronze is as easy as not playing the game for close to a year after a handful of team and badly played 1v1 games, and suddenly deciding to do placement matches.

Hey, let me guess, even though I've never fucking heard of you, you're going to win MLG or Dreamhack sometime soon, right? Because beating HuK is as easy as making a bunch of units and microing them.

Don't mistake "I suck at this game, but I own my mistakes in an effort to improve" for "talk out your ass and expect me not to mock you."

Well I'm in masters league. Difficulty should be measured by the highest representation of skill.

That's unreasonable, I think. Balance should be measured by the highest representation of skill, but difficulty should be measured subjective to the current level of play. Terran can be pretty hard at low levels, because unless you want to ONLY have stim bio in your repertoire, you need to practice using multiple things, and some of them are very intolerant to mistakes in positioning and micro.

For example, certain things are incredibly powerful at certain levels of play due to skill threshholds for the proper ways to avoid them. Fungal is easier to use than good split micro, for example.

Not really. A race can be the easiest to learn (and be the easiest to understand conceptually) and yet be the hardest to execute well when you face much more difficult competition. (Like UD in War3.) At lower leagues, playing Terran is as easy as:

Group all CCs to 4, all raxes to 5, army to 1.

All game, you basically do 4ssssssssss5aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa1aclick with the occasional 4shifteclickclickclick, and if you never get supply blocked, you can stomp your way through Bronze/Silver by a-moving marines. You used to be able to do this through Gold too (and it still works for lower Gold), but at that league, you need to take into account the fact that marines without stim and without medivacs and no upgrades suck against an actual army. It is really very boring, esp. when your opponent's not even doing anything to give you anything to do or defend against. It's got nothing to do with "balance." It is simple conceptually for Toss and Zerg to do the same, but if you want to do the macrostomp strat in lower leagues, it is a little more complicated since you can't miss chronos, need to keep warp cycles in mind, and need to hit your injects, etc.

lols, well done my man. My advice from those days (although even in beta i think i was silver) is that if you follow the pro scene, you will understand the game better than your opponents, so as long as you scout them you should be fine to react well. get into the habit of suiciding overlords and getting overseers as soon as your lair pops.

Yeah, I usually don't lose because of a lack of information, just because my reaction time tends to suck. I usually have fairly good map vision, but either forgetting detection or forgetting drones or not attacking cause me some trouble.

But I feel like I'm improving, regardless of current results. I think the big thing is ignoring what the score screen says, for me. Losing doesn't mean much, winning doesn't mean much. Getting more efficient at playing the game will make me better, and if the only part of the game I enjoy is seeing my opponent leave, it wouldn't even be worth the time to play.

Once I suck less, I can be more interested in wins.

that's a great attitude. I get too hung up on results and often blame all my losses on lag, balance, tiredness or (most often) CHEESE!

but i know that most of my loses come from me playing badly. not scouting or whatever. And when i look at it that way i feel motivated by my loses rather than angry at them.

Also I find that forcing myself to be manner tends to improve my overall mood about loss streaks.

Me forcing myself to be manner means limiting myself to glhf and gg, mostly. Not like I want to have conversations with people on the ladder anyways.

All of my losses tend to come from just losing focus on pure mechanics, or forgetting something incredibly basic.

I really need to attack earlier in games though. I tend to poke once early, and then not do anything until I'm close to maxed, unless I do some harass. Doesn't really work too well.

Nah, high diamond, low masters at most.

If nothing else, I've probably got the lowest MMR stream on TL.

What kerpal said. Eventually, you reach this singularity of frustration, rage and self-loathing that causes you to never forget to make that damn Observer in PvP again because of motherf**king DT's, oh god I hate them so much!

Sorry...brought back a lot of bad memories.
