Hey,
I play with a low end flat keyboard from Saitek for a long time.
Now I got the money to aim at some mechanical keyboard.

I did some research and since i realized there is a ton of options regarding switches I thought it would be wise to ask the TL community.

Here is a link to all the different switches and alot of information about mechanical keyboards in general:

http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/491752-mechanical-keyboard-guide.html#post_6009482

Can you share some experiences with me about the keyboard / switch you use?

Would be awesome!

my advice is try out stuff first, go to lans and type a little, i got lucky with my mx blues cos they are a dream but i nearly went for some blacks and i played a couple games on them and it was horrible.

I have a Steelseries 6Gv2 and I like it (but alot don't:see above), but I second guy above me and recommend trying out if you can because there is a huge difference in the switches and reading about them is not even close to actually trying them.

That said... if all you have ever had is a relatively shitty keyboard I am a firm believer that you could buy any decent mechanical keyboard, use for a month to get used to it and love it. (Took me a while to get used to mine for sure.) Even my black switches which are stiff as hell once I got used to them I don't like blues when I tried them.

I use the MX Blues, which people say are the stiffest, but I find them pretty easy to type on. It really depends on preference, but I am sure of one thing, I never want to go back to membrane...

Also, MX Blues make a substantial amount of noise, so make sure you sort that out in case you want to get one of those.

Yeah this is the absolute truth. Thats why I say no matter which switch you buy the fact that every key is the exact same every time means that once you get used to it, it'll be great.

I played on my friends Razer Black Widow, which has the Cherry MX Blues, and I loved it. I ordered the keyboard a week ago, and it still hasn't come in.... I hate the postal service soooo much!

Blacks, browns, and blues are the typical switch types you are likely to see most. All are louder than membrane keyboards but blues are the loudest. Blacks require the most force to press. Blues are great for typing in addition to gaming. Browns are basically the middle ground.

I have a Zowie Celeritas which has brown switches. It's a great keyboard and I like it very much, plus it's about $100 on newegg. Only major con are the nylon keycaps which get dirty/fade quick.

A lot of the decision comes down to preference so do your research and make sure to get what you want.

I have MX Browns on my first mech keyboard and it works really well for everything in general.
Now we are both in the club of "people who caught mice and asked IRC what to do". Mine was caught face first on a glue trap though, but his back legs were free and he was pushing the trap all over my house. I ended up drowning him. - Lemonwalrus

Hey. If you don't want to spend too much money, I would reccomend the CM Storm Quickfire. If you're patient it can be found for around $65. I got it for $67.

It's virtually identical to the filcos that many others reccomend (I believe they're made by the same producers, but don't quote me on that) and it feels amazing. They're Cherry MX Blues. Honestly, they're not that loud. I personally enjoy the sound, and if I'm conscious about being soft on them while I play, my roommates can sleep in the same room as me while I ladder. Then again, they're not too bothered by soft noise, but still. Couldn't play without it now. The key presses are SO much smoother than with my old logitech membrane. Plus the response time is amazing.

Well, I think for me it is a big con of the blue switches that the release point is above the actuation point.
I play a lot of OSU! too and there you tap the same key about 700 times / game.
So i tend to look out for keyboards with black or brown switches.

I read alot of reviews about the MEKA from ttesports.
It appears that most testers think that black switches are hard to press down and a clear feedback of when the key is registered is missing.
Also 100% say that its "less than ideal" for typing.
Ofc I use the keyboard for typing too and I wouldnt want it to annoy me.

I tested the MEKA myself at cebit in hannover, but it wasnt attached to anything, just the raw keyboard laying around so I cant really say anything about it, just that (of course) its harder to press the keys than on my current keyboard.

I used this one til now: http://www.logitech.com/assets/14305/14305.png
so Iam used to very light keys... very bad for gaming I guess..

So now I look to find some keyboards with brown switches. Might be the best choice for me eh?
I will go to some electronic shops and test some even tho I would like to just freakin buy one right now xD

I've got a Mionix Zibal 60 mechanical keyboard with Cherry Black keys. It's actually not very hard to press it (but definitely harder than the Cherry Blues on the Blackwidow), pretty similar to the standard keyboards I've used (Dell, IBM, etc). I like the Cherry Blacks because it's hard to press multiple keys on accident compared to the Blues (and probably reds too).

If you bottom out though it does make more noise than standard keyboards.

After reading a few reviews including this: http://pcgamingcorner.com/wordpress/?p=2744
Iam really atracted by that keyboard. The layout looks great and seeing the black switches in action in comparison to a keyboard thats almost identical to what I use...I mean...wow :D great.

Looks like a really nice keyboard.

That's the keyboard I have. I've really enjoyed it so far. There are versions with brown and black switches, depending on which country you are in. I think they distribute more browns and less blues in European countries, so there's that.

I highly suggest a Leopold. Filco quality for less. http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold Take your pick. I suggest brown switches but any is good.

I use a Das Ultimate with Blues. Personally, I knew that I wanted blues from going through the general research about having the tactile feel and the awesome click associated with Blues. For some people, they dislike the sound and/or have circumstances that prevent such a choice.

There are quite a few Youtube videos that go over the sounds of the various switches so you know what you're getting into, but personally trying them cannot compare so if you have the opportunity I would definitely advise you to try.

Since you are getting your first mech, and I am assuming you play sc, do NOT get black switches. They are painfully hard to play through at fast speeds, and Im not sure why they are even used for rts gamers which requires so many presses . Def start off with brown or blue imo, brown for more comfort, and blue for a more clicky sound if thats your thing. Both are good in terms of difficulty to actuate though. Good luck

Edit: ^ Yeah, I got my leopold browns about a 3 weeks ago, and it is a very nice keyboard, feels great and a very solid/heavy board
Question.?

Not much to say except test it out your self and see what you like. Empirical evidence. Where else to turn to when you want to know something?
