This blog post is to talk about my experience playing the new maps with 6 minerals and 1 high yield geyser. I have to say, i'm actually impressed at what this games have been. Out of the total 6 games I've played on 6m maps yesterday and today, ALL of them have been a lot of fun. I've remembered my times on Broodwar, since the map plays out very differently than regular sc2 maps. Heres a list of my impressions.
1. First impression: Skepticisim. Definitely thought since this isnt a mod or anything, there's no way the game will change that much. I mean, I get it, less minerals and 1 gas means less units, but this isnt Warcraft 3! 2. Survival. WHAT. It's so easy to defend and survive crap since most attacks come with less units. Less units = my probes help even more. Feels like defender's advantage has come back. Might be different as I play this map more and more, but not at the moment. 3. Expand, expand, expand! Since the mineral count on each base is lower, it is saturated more quickly, forcing you to either expand earlier or go gg allin mode. Since my impression #2 is strong, it is discouraged! 3. Guerrilla attacks. Since there's normally a lot of expanding, you bet there's a lot of smaller army harrassing! Most battles i've engaged with being harrassed or harrassing end up being smaller battles, but they feel so much more rewarding. 4. Maps... what can I say. Most maps i've played STRONGLY resemble broodwar playstyles. I loved planting pylons and making warp prisms to harrass several bases. Dont know why but, it feels much better on these maps. 5. Balance. It is said that its hard to play PvZ on these maps. I havent really played someone the same level as me, so I guess I didnt have much of a problem. Then again, the games were closer than expected. Might get a few friends to come over and play with me.
Overall I'm very hopeful as to what this means for the future of SC2. I need to playtest this much more, and with higher ranked opponents, as well as obs more matches to see what people are doing. I just wish that if these long drawn out games persist in my 6m experience as some people have, Blizzard developers/balance team also look into this maps as well. I feel this can be a potential shift on the SC2 experience.
A shift into the entertainment side.

This seems interesting and if it works out the way you are saying it might, I think it would improve SC2 by a lot. One of the major turnoffs for SC2 right now for me is the fact that a majority of games both sides get maxed to 200/200 (or close to it), have one major battle, then that's generally the end of the game in a lot of circumstances. If having less of an income of minerals and gas per base makes the game more harass/skirmish/expand oriented, I think it would make the game a lot more enjoyable personally.

completely agree. been playing 6m maps way more than ladder. its not perfect, with a few tweaks needed here and there but still way more fun to play and observe.
the only thing Im concerned about is mules being a bit too efficient with marines compared to 8m maps but that's just a minor adjustment if it even needs to be changed. it could quite possibly just need a different approach from my side.
loving it

I'm really happy you started out skeptical and were convinced otherwise just by playing! Need more brotoss in the channel. =)

Are there any commentated vods of decent players playing 6m maps? I won't be bothered to go play it myself, but I'd like to see how it changes the dynamics of the game.

I wonder what difference changing the pop cap from 200 to 300 would do on a 6m1hyg would have on the game, i believe that having 5 6m bases is the same as 3 8m bases. so i guess it could get a little off chops XD
However having played the 6m1hyg maps its really really weird having to expand so much, and not dieing to various allins :p if this were ever an official release they would defiantly have to do a lot of re balancing to get it right.

Barrin's huge post and everyone's positive experiences with this "mod" make me really excited that there might be a way to fix one of SC2's biggest design issues.
Because although it might be imbalanced (at first), just experimenting with the idea will probably give insight as to how the game might work differently with 6m/7m and how this improves on what we've been playing so far.

I think it's hard because the things that are hard in PvZ (mutas, early pushes, lategame) are magnified.

Really great post/blog. This would solve a lot of the typical "2 base toss" strats that just sit there on 4 gas until they roll out in a big death ball. With less gas, means more cheaper/lower tiered units. I love seeing mass tier 1 unit battles.
