Not everybody thinks The Third Birthday is offensive to PE fans, but if you do, the major criticism of the game is that it's offensive to it's built-in fanbase, yet nigh-incomprehensible to new players who don't know the backstory, therefore pleasing no one. It's too important a criticism to mention in passing as you do, IMO.

It was difficult to get across aya's predicament without using spoilers. Fans would be offended by aya's character because as i mentioned, she's boring, weak sounding, shy, and sheepish this time around -- which isn't like her at all. Fans will immediately understand why they won't like this, because fans know Aya Brea. To explain further makes a review quite long. I then say not to worry, because even if it does seem offensive, it pays off in a really cool way at the end -- "the narrative's greatest strength" is in fact what seems to be it's greatest weakness. In other words, it means not to jump to conclusions. Surely her new character will be explained, and it is. What will be offensive, regardless, is the game's script. Because anything other than the ending is handled pretty poorly, so fans will certainly be insulted by the developer's poor choice of additional characters and writing. This explanation was nearly half the concluding paragraph, so i hope it didn't seem like it was being dishonest to any PE Fan. But the ending is a pleasing turn of events, and the entire game beforehand is a pretty alright shoot-em-up. The game pleases no one because of a poor narrative? A bit harsh. Many Starcraft Broodwar fans were offended by SC2's campaign, but at the same time, a lot of them still enjoyed it, some even more so. And just because the clothes ripping off may offend previous fans, that's more a matter of taste. I can't simply knock it because it may not fly with Aya Brea enthusiasts. It's a ridiculous aspect that actually fits with the ridiculous nature of the combat, and it's a funny idea. Visual combat damage is also a pretty nice addition, considering much of what you face attacks with acid and claws. And to complain about how unrealistic it is for her to keep her own clothes when diving into other human beings? That's incredibly petty. Did you give me one star? =[

Also this may not be a surprise, but PE 1 fan here (and therefore not a 2/3 fan).

If you have played it, then I feel quite bad if the review sounded dismissive of important problems. I really wanted to get across how the game may not be what fans were hoping for, and to expect a personality they don't remember, accompanied by poor characters and writing that lead to an ending that deserved much better. That is one of the big negative bullet points for this review, with clarification that Aya isn't actually the issue, it's everything else that doesn't have good explanation. But as for specifically how deep that cuts for some PE fans, or how sexualizing a character is demeaning to it, well that seems more appropriate for a dedicated opinion piece instead of a professional recommendation. edit: i guess it sounds like i'm refuting, which isn't good. if the review failed, it failed. hope to have some more up in the coming weeks!
