Hey you TLer !
A bunch of friends just started to code an RTS game. What I already know about it : - They all play starcraft so SC2 is a big source of inspiration. - It's going to be in 2D with a cartoonish style. - Online \o/ and focused on 1vs1.
They made a little survey to have a better understanding of what we (the players) want : click here if you have 5minutes.
Also if you have an interesting idea/concept or something you wanted to add to the survey, feel free to post below and I'll make sure to let them know about it ! The development is in its very early phase and they are open to any suggestions.
And yes, there will be rocks!

Please make it balanced :D But seriously, the kind of RTS games I enjoy (other then starcraft) are similar to empire earth and Rise of Nations, where you move up in ages and have different civilizations. I don't know how experienced these guys are but something with lots of races/countries/civilizations to choose from is a really good idea IMO! Edit- I filled out the survey, GL on the game!

Done! Tell your friends good luck :D

I'd suggest making the game as complex as possible, don't focus on stuff like graphics but on creative and complex gameplay. You wont have the resources to do anything spectacular with graphics, so focus on making them clean an informative as possible.
Since you said you're inspired by SC2 I assume it's gonna be rather dynamic so just make sure thre's always something to do ingame = stuff doesn't take forever to happen and happens rarely.

There isn't enough multi-player rts being made now a days. Good luck.

Done, good luck! I'm a bit curious as to what programming language/libraries they're planning to use for the game. Keep us updated if you can, and as the others said: Gameplay > Graphics. Look a Brood War if you disagree

One thing with the survey. I only play rts games so I had to rank the other games in random order to move on.

We’re coding the game in C++ using the SFML library for graphics and Boost simplifying us the code in general. Also, the game will be released on Windows, Mac and Linux.

We intend to do simple, clean but nice and cute 2D graphics. We are definitely focusing on the gameplay.
Once we have something to show, we will post some screenshots. And thank you everyone for all your suggestions and kind comments, they’re really motivating us ! If you have any suggestions, reply !
