So I'm at that point where I haven't found any in-my-face, love-at-first-listen, amazing music in a while, and exhausting all of my usual options for finding new music (I normally find it on youtube, linked from friends, random stuff I find while browsing last.fm or on 4chan's /mu/ which is actually a great resource for finding new music) and I was hoping the lovely folks at TL could help me find something new and good. I listen to music regardless of its genre but I mostly listen to indie/hip-hop, this is what I've been listening to recently:
So any recommendations? I'm more inclined to like stuff that is similar to what I've linked but like I said I'll listen to anything! Link a song or a whole album if you think it's worth listening to.
Well, if that's awesome music to you, I guess I got nothing for you.
I find music by having friends who listen to music and finding new friends who then introduce me to new stuff... if I'm really desperate I turn on the radio. Of course back in the day there was only "the" radio but now you have millions of stations that support webradio - or are purely web-based. Google is your (evil) friend.
You may also want to find "Blalocks Indie Rock playlist", which I just found out is now "Best Indie Rock Playlist" (a bit pretentious, I find, but good nonetheless).
Yeah I'm not too sure about knowing anything with your tastes, but you could always use a proxy to get on to Pandora, enter those songs and it'll give you similar songs and you'll probably end up with some new favourites.
That is just a sliver of my musical tastes. I suppose I should have been more direct in saying that you guys should just link me to music that you think is good, which is why I don't find Pandora or last.fm's recommendations particularly useful. Most of the music that I instantly fall in love with is not found by trying to find something similar to what I already like, it just jumps out of nowhere as something new. I listen to post-rock, jazz, metal, classical, shoegaze, chillwave, electronic (all sorts), dirty south rap, literally anything. I put those songs there to inspire people to post as they might have a song that they think fits my taste that they would otherwise not post.
I never really look for new music. I just stumble upon it through members of my favourite bands doing songs with other bands, related videos on youtube and so on. Not sure if the songs i linked are good examples of "love at first listen" but hey, they're my favourites.
There is a decent chance you have already heard of all or most of what I am about to suggest, but ya never know, so, here is a list of songs/artists I find to be good:
"Murder in the City" - Avette Brothers (folk) "Crane Wife part 1 and 2" - The Decemberist (Indie) "Good ol Fashion Nightmare" - Matt and Kim (Indie) "Gotta get Drunk" - Willie Nelson (country) "Leadbelly" - Melody Federer (Jazz) "Point/Counterpoint" - Streetlight Manifesto (3rd wave ska) "Can I Kick It" - A Tribe Called Quest (hip-hop) "Candy" - Presidents of the United States of America (indie) "From the Rits to the Rubble" -Artic Monkeys (I am pretty sure you know this one, but just in case)
One good way to discover good music is to basically find the best artists in your favourite genres but from other countries (or rather, only popular in other countries).
For example,
Hip-hop: K-os
Buck 65
A (very) small sample of Canada's indie-rock scene: Hey Rosetta
