I recently started trying out a different set of key binds for Terran control groups. 1-8 are still bound normally, but 9 is bound to tilde and 0 is bound to Q. As of now, I'm using control group Q for all Command Centers, tilde to all upgrades (tech labs, engineering bays, etc.), 1-3 for army units, 4 for Barracks, 5 for Factories, and 6 for Starports. Capslock is set to select idle SCVs. Currently, 7 and 8 remain unused. I had a few thoughts about Terran control groups.
I notice that some players bind individual Command Centers to control groups to quickly center the screen on them, putting all production facilities on a single control group. To mitigate the lack of individual CC control groups, I usually use screen hotkeys (which for me are F1-F5) to go to my main, natural third, fourth, and rally point for armies. I'm pondering trying is out, though, as having all my production on one group puts them in reach of the tab key, which is appealing.
I have also seen people put reactor'd rax on one group and tech lab'd ran on another. Why is this? I don't see the benefit of splitting the same type of production building up this way. Similarly, I've seen orbitals versus planetary fortresses split up.
I figure the answer to "which should I use" is just "try all of them and see what works best", but I'd like to know if I'm going down the wrong road before traveling down it. Any input is greatly appreciated!
Also I got placed in Gold in season five, and subsequently season six, after being Silver in season 2 and not playing at all in 3 and 4. Yay?

Not sure about orbital and planetarys, but sometimes I want to build a hellion on a reactored factory and the game qeue's it into the techlab factory. I know that is because the techlab factory are closer to finish, however when you want to reserve that spot for the time when you have enough gas to qeue the next gas unit, this can be bothersome.

Hmm, that's a fair point. Can't you tab between tech lab buildings and reactor buildings to mitigate that issue though?
|
no you can not tab between reactored builidings and tech labed buildings
|
Then this presents a good reason to split those two types of buildings up... I suppose that it would vary somewhat based on what build you're trying to do...

Hey, I actually do the exact same thing as you! :D If you're comfortable with it, then roll with it.
To clarify: I put all CCs/PFs on 4 All production on 5 and tab through Upgrades on 6 Nuke Silos/nydus on 7 and use F1-F8 to center over my bases
The use of screen hotkeys made my mechanics 100000x better.
Also, on the topic of splitting up tech lab/reactor. . . I advise against it. Get into the kind of habit where you make units that require tech lab first, then reactor later.
eg: select rax marauder marauder marine marine marine marine
if you've got 2 tech 2 react
That's how I do it, personally.

Highly suggest what cycle said. I actually had to think about the "problem" of getting the reactor units out of the tech labbed buildings because it just never happens if you just get into the habit.

Honestly just pick something that works for you and makes sense and stick to it until it's second nature. Unless it is completely illogical it should be good.
My hotkeys for terran are generally:
1-4: Army 5: Barracks 6: Factories 7: Starports 9: Expansion Orbital 0: All orbitals
3: First orbital (gets overwritten by army later) 4: Second orbital (gets overwritten by army later)
And i use f2-f4 for locations
I definitely think it's better to put rax/factories/sps on different hotkeys, because tabbing is awkward and slow. Just IMO though.
