After reading a reddit post named 'I hate you. I hate you so, damned, much.' referring video ads I thought about it. People don't necessarily associate supporting something with ads for some reason. It seems like just something annoying so they simply use adblock. From my perspective, a low-budget student, ads are great! My favorite content providers do so for free only at the cost of my one view. Day[9] once said that he wouldn't sell out and do in-show product placement or advertising. I find this idea people have of 'selling out' ridiculous. Relying on ads may not be the way do make esports a solid self-sustaining industry, but at this stage it is the primary income for allot of organizations and people. So I think we should collectively try to raise awareness and educate everyone.
I set off to do some research and found out that, maybe intentionally, information about web advertising is not particularly clear or abundant. Nevertheless any information can be helpful. Ads have static rates per, most commonly, 1 000 views. Revenue from clicks however depends on several factors, in general it can grant larger sums.
Here are some facts:
- Disabling adblock helps!
Disable adblock for your favourite sites and content providers to help them by simple seeing the banners.
- Big, more seemingly invasive ads, like dr.Pepper videos during MLG events are generally played while there is no current content, or only when first tuning in.
If you have been using Adblock, but want to support content creators I personally would suggest this: Turn it off for the webpages you visit daily or enjoy. Maybe try clicking an ad once a day. Simple.
Here are some things I am not certain about:
-Clicking frenzy
Trying to click all the ads you see may seem like a good idea, but the scripts on the google servers are not simple counters. They may see this as an attempt to abuse the system, or may simply have an algorithm that limits clicks per IP for a period.
^ Somewhat explained in the update
-Shiny ads
'Per click' rates vary greatly. It would be logical that better looking, international ads may grant more revenue.
I am grateful for anybody who can clarify these or point out wrong statements.
Update from 21th of july 2012:
Here is a case of the lack of information I was talking about. Even though I had spent a long time searching around and looking for information I was not aware of this: (a part from TGS Podcasts where TB explains what clicking ads may lead to)
