I don't understand why a 50% sale price is supposed to be a red flag indicating a poor product. You could just have easily have received that exact same non-working item had it been ordered at full price.
I also don't see what "a cult of Razer" has to do with occasional defective products. You're far more likely to get a bad review from an unhappy customer than you are to get a good review from a happy customer. I know I have never written a review on any of my equipment that works perfectly (Deathadder, Steelseries keyboard, Logitech headset, nvidia graphics card), but I have written a couple bad ones for other stuff that didn't end up working (Samson microphone). Finding several bad reviews amongst good ones is not indicative of a trend.
Your logic and reasoning is bad and your point is irrelevant and poorly explained.
There are things I dislike about Razer - I have an innate dislike of any company trying to be "cool", because it never seems to come off as genuine, but you had two reasons for writing this blog post - number one being that you felt suckered by the price (which is irrelevant to receiving a defective product), and number two being suckered by the Razer "cult", which would only be relevant if Razer truly did have a reputation for making shitty products, which, as far as I can find out, they do not. they simply have a normal number of bad reviews that any electronics company gets. I have a number of friends who have Razer mice and keyboards that work fine and have done for ages.

The razer website is complete shit and for that reason alone I would not buy from them. It's all a marketing gimmick. You can't properly sort the products based on features and it's all smoke and mirrors from what I can see.

You have to pay for an RMA? In what universe? Never experienced that...

My death adder Black edition has been a really sexy mouse that I've really enjoyed far more then any other mouse that I've gotten. I had a guy on my floor who had a mamba (wireless) that he loved as well. My headset is starting to show its age but for a year and a half nothing has been a better friend to me.

I bought a deathadder 2years ago and it still works perfectly fine. When it dies, im gonna buy another one!

I think the OP said he has to pay for the postage, but I agree, it is extremely odd that any company would expect a customer who receives a non-functional product to have to pay money to return it.

You have to pay postage, and when its a big keyboard the shipping company will rape you with charges. I payed 15$ to send my Razer Deathadder back (im not complaining though I loved that mouse ;

Razer deathadder is the perfect mouse, and I am really glad with this purchase!!!!

My blackwidow, deathadder, and moray have never caused me a problem in my life. Razer for life.

You have to pay the shipping in this case :\
Please note that the RMA number must be noted on the outside of the returned product's package. You will be considered to have returned the said product to Razer if you have delivered the product to a carrier and have taken all necessary steps to ensure that the product is delivered to Razer, including paying all shipping charges in returning the product to Razer. We advise that you select a method of shipping that is traceable (eg. UPS, DHL, FedEx).

Work in retail a bit before you try to talk out of your ass. When something goes on a clearance sale, especially in electronics, It's usually because the product won't be carried anymore. The reasons why it won't be sold anymore vary of course, but it's a red flag because you might not be able to get an exchange or return, or any kind of support for the product (which in this case was true).

I feel like razor has gotten worse in the sense that their new products are designed to further the cult of razor. I have a Deathadder that is about 4 years old, and it still works fine. However, they have these new specialty mice that cost 1.5-2x more and have worthless buttons that are supposed to make you better at WoW.

dead on arrival happens with all products of all brands. you just get unlucky. I've had razer products for a while and they've been my choice even before seeing them sponsor players.

Razer is actually hands down the worst company for gaming products. They always have great product ideas but they never seem to work flawlessly. Having one or two flaws wouldn't be an issue, but the flaws are generally REALLY bad flaws. It sucks because when you actually get a good model that's not defective, it's a great product, but when you don't it's like absolute garbage and this happens entirely too often with Razer.
I'm glad they sponsor e-sports and Team Liquid and all that, but I really wish they'd release solid products and actually had decent customer support, especially for the ridiculous amount of money they ask for their products.

I got a Razer Deathadder, broke withing 3 months, just stopped working, so I got a SteelSeries Sensei and a WASD keyboard fully customized, couldn't be happier =D
|
I have a Razer Abyssus, it's nothing special, it just looks cool, and now that I think about it, the mouse wheel is getting a little bit jittery. Whenever I scroll up line by line, every once in a while the mouse will want to scroll down a bit again. I completely agree with the OP that they are a cult company, and while I haven't had such a negative experience, I definitely want to recommend prospective buyers to be wary.

I like my cheap $10 Microsoft mouse. It's been very reliable. I'm probably just ignorant, but I can't imagine a $50 mouse to be THAT much better.
|
My Razer mouse is in its fourth year and still going strong, only the scroll wheel won't click any more (still scrolls). But then again, it cost me only 15 bucks and was the cheapest they had.
I don't play SC2 at a high enough level for my mouse/keyboard/headset to actually matter. Cheap mouse, laptop, shitty setup. Good to go.
Also, Razer may be famous as a gaming peripheral company, but they (along with Steelseries and the like) are not all that old and venerable as hardware companies. IMO for similar products I'd much rather go with the older/larger companies like Logitech or Microsoft.

My blackwidow ultimate works perfectly, you just had bad luck and it's a bit sad that your blog post becomes heavily baised against Razer because of it. I mean, you didn't even buy it from Razer, it could be an issue with how Amazon handled it.
I bought a Razer mamba at the same time, and it's great as well, though the soft plastic on the right side has started to come slightly lose.
I find that it's similar to apple. Pretty intense prices considering the quality (my macbook pretty much fell to peices over a year and the monitor got completely busted for no reason), but you get amazing looking functional stuff. It's definitely the best keyboard and mouse I've had, without any doubt.

I bought a Razer Tarantula keyboard a long, long time ago. Had it for a year or so before the "A" key just stopped working and was permanently pressed down, that was my only bad experience with a Razer product, albeit a quite expensive one. I currently own a Death Adder and have owned a Carcharias headset in the past, both of which had no issues.
If you're looking for a mechanical keyboard to get down the road, I'm using a Steelseries 6gv2 and I love it. Though it uses MX blacks which are smooth and don't click, which imo is great, ESPECIALLY (and I can't stress this enough) if you plan to game with your friends over Skype. I have a buddy that uses a Blackwidow and it's the bane of my fucking ear drums over mic. That thing is SO DAMN LOUD.
