So I've checked out some pro league through nanashin and sayle's recasts and I've decided I want to play this game on iccup.
One of the biggest motivators for me is that everyone is so unbelievably receptive. In the IRC chat I ask very newbie questions and everyone is so unbelievably kind and helpful. The analogy that I want to make is that the brood war community is a lot like walking into a building full with beautiful seductive women. They offer to take your coat off, give your feet a massage, and give you a nice comfy couch to sit on. The forums are no different. Everyone is just so happy and kind all the time.
So I have to decide the race I'm going to play, and I've boiled it down to two variables. Zerg has my favorite music, but protoss can do this thing where they load up high templar and drop them into worker lines and kill them off, and I want to do that. I've also been told that I'm going to lose my first 200 games, and hopefully I'm prepared to receive this. I also need to figure out a sweet handle, I picked tbone in sc2 but that name is pretty lame. I might try streaming as well, but I doubt anyone would want to watch this soon to be terrible, terrible player.
Hopefully I survive this encounter!
TL;DR The brood war community is filled with seductive women, I'm going to lose my first 200 games probably, and I'm either playing zerg because they have my favorite music, or protoss because storm drops make me happy.

Stream and ask for suggestions/help, beats watching one of your replays with you cause we can see exactly what you see too. The openess is poart genuine being awesome community (that's the biggest part really) then there's also a bit of 'heh, guess what I can teach you', and another side is happness more poeple are coming to love and enjoy the game.

Always nice to see new people get into BW
I'm torn between storm drops, or reaver drops. Reavers will be your new favorite unit, and storm will be your new favorite spell in BW

BW definitely has a friendly community, given how competitive it is.
Great that you are cool with losing 200 games, because you will.
General consensus seems to be that protoss require less apm to be successful at the lower level. Zerg IMO is also a lot more reliant on tight timing, which may not be good for a new player looking to improve their mechanics.
But you should try playing each race/matchup a couple of times first anyways. Sometimes a race just "clicks" with you.

Oh, and get friends, join a clan, get to know people. That's what I enjoy most about TL, it's so much more than ladder points, it's a whole community of peole who, though they support oposing teams, all still love and understand the great game of Starcraft and enjoying watching and playing it.
