Many people and gamers are fans of horror or "scary" video games. These games are designed to frighten the user during game play and perhaps even provide adrenaline for the user. Many people are fans of these such games just because they like the thrill of being frightened at certain points.

But the question is, has any of those games been SO frightening to someone that they are too scared to even play it? For some games that answer is yes. For example, I and many people I know would never play Amnesia. That game is crazy. Some games require a mental block to be knocked down before the user gains enough confidence to try it.

I feel as though this may be the case for some people with SC2. If you browse the forums or just listen to SC2 newcomers in general, many of them say they have "ladder anxiety" or fear of queuing up on the ladder because they are either nervous or scared they may lose. While this is not the same type of fear one may experience in a horror game, it can be just as difficult to overcome.

For me it was simple, I played a ton of games non stop for about a week and that anxiety went away, but some people still cannot overcome that feeling. SC2 is not a scary game, there are no monsters that are going to pop up and send you flying back in your chair, and there is no one waiting for you around the corner if you lose a game. The only fear that people have is that they think they may not be good enough to achieve what they want to..

I was a Bronze league noobie and right now I'm up in Diamond league after changing races as well. People shouldn't be scared for the mentality this game calls for, they should embrace it. So to all of those out there that are experiencing ladder anxiety I have a challenge for you today, or even throughout the week:

Que up and play 5-10 ladder games straight in a row (you can watch the replay if you want to).

If you lose, briefly consider why (no saying "I lost because I suck" or "I was nervous")

No excuses

Do this today and try to do it for the rest of the week. You can even focus on one build and just repeat that throughout every single one of your games. The point is to Play!

Have fun getting rid of that gut wrenching feeling, and experience SC2!

And reply when you're done saying how it went!

The possibility of the other guy in a 1v1 being naked is why I have absolutely zero ladder anxiety.

Rofl you get jitters when going on stage? I get scared to ladder because if I lose a go down in rank and will lose my epic spot of bragging rights. I usually take a few xanax before hand so I don't screw up, but stage? You in front of people you don't even know, who cares?

Same can be said for stage fright. I for one, am never nervous on stage, but I am scared to ladder. I usually play soccer the best when I'm under pressure, but if I play Starcraft two under pressure, I usually lose.

so tired of hearing the phrase ladder anxiety honestly. If you're scared to ladder, consider this; In order to grow, you have face yourself. Dont hold yourself in such high esteem that allows you to imply you have something physically or emotionally at stake on the ladder. If you hold your ego above improvement, you will never improve

Ladder putting you against people that are supposed to make you lose makes me know I have to try to give 100% to keep my ranking moving up. That's stressful.

I find it really weird that such a massive amount of ladder anxiety occurs in SC2, but in SC/BW you rarely ever had anyone post they had anxiety / fear from laddering. There is like, literally nothing at stake when laddering online, yet soo many people have crazy fear of losing a video game.

There was just fewer people playing, so there wasnt as many people to have ladder anxiety, and even less that would then follow it up by blogging about it. I'm sure it happened to many though

I'm just glad that my hands are no longer shaking so badly that I can't even use the keyboard. Its ridiculous how much anxiety this creates in you...and if there is a significant, positive correlation between the number of people who play the game and the number of people who watch it I think this presents a major problem for SC2 as a viable esport.

The strange thing is it doesn't even matter if I choose to play a custom game against a random opponent. The anxiety persists...or maybe its adrenaline that I confuse with anxiety as our resident TL psychologist pointed out in the thread he created (forgot the title).

When I played arena in WoW I took it pretty seriously and the only way I would play was if my teammates would ask me to play, we always were a top team but I was always nervous and freaking out the entire time, with SC2 I have noone to push me to 1v1 so I just don't most of the time, only when someone says something do I finally play.
