I haven’t visited TL (iCCup same)or played a single SC:BW game since I moved to University in Scotland this September, and cold turkey’s fuckin hard, even more so when my SC rank and TL addiction was at it’s lifetime peak. I’ve decided to write a blog series about my relationship with dear SC:BW, SCII, Korean BW Scene, and majestic TeamLiquid.net .
It’s new year’s eve, I’m sitting with my laptop in front of the family fire (…in the fireplace, silly, I love my family too much to do that to them) with some Kreik (if you don’t know, Google), listenin to “RARE FUNKY MUSIC 80´s - PART. IV” (GOOGLE! get it!) and I’m busy being melancholy.
Big ups to anyone who even so much as noted my absence, shoutout to Mortician for getting a soundcard, for all I know I’ve just as likely been temp-banned again as not getting any PM’s in my absence. Hell, I love PM’s, their little “NEW” insignia just gets me so happy, send me one brah!
So here’s the low-down on what the sections will be, and I’ve got a few other TL projects I’d also like to complete, for once (e.g. NaDa’s Body Song, “Old Map Love” thread, Batoo 2008 holistic OSL recap) so any help would go a long way in seeing any of those completed.
ChildCraft: Brood War ; 2o’5
This was my youth, my childhood enjoyment, I hold it oh-so-dear.

I played computer games as a kid, as my main outlet. Friends lol, sports no, well I did read but that cut out. It was all down to a few computer games I’d inherited from my older Brother, in particular SC:BW. How I followed his example by having LANs with my friends, making them my best friends, and the wonderful and exciting experience it was to go from scrounging a few replays off some cool sites (gg.net, tl.net) to being ranked #1 in my country (more on that later, but ah got pix k?). The near love-story of following the SC:BW proscene, and in that light reflecting on the pain and loss of it being defunct now.

How it ‘grew’ me, the things I really love and miss, remorse and joy, things left incomplete. Analysing why I was so drawn to the community. Seriously, TL’s a been a real big thing in my life, mayne, I would check it 2-3-4 times a day, and I’ve gone cold turkey for 3 months.

Your best friend’s in a band, you love his music, play it play it love it. So many good experiences and memories. Summers spent with your pals listening to it, figuring out how to play it yourself, watching the superstars jam on it. Then he goes upscale and gets much more popular, he’s got an updated sound, and he’s got loads of new fans, SO MANY MORE. Where’s that connection you had? You prefer the old music, and you stick to playing it. Your ears perk up any time you hear his name mentioned, but the people don’t know the old tracks and covers you’ve got so many memories with, they just know the new stuff.
There’s nothing wrong with the new stuff, it’s bringing happiness and enjoyment to far more people, it’s much more approachable, but you, who knew it and lived it and loved it then, feel separated. And gradually the diehards fade out, the radio stations and guys who want soundtracks for their Youtube channels switch over completely to the new fourm. But having known and lived the old fuorm, you feel the flaws in the new one and don’t evolve. And that loss and distance hurts. It just hurts.

Old Pro-Sceen is dead, gotta move on, devote my time and self to more fulfilling pursuits. Dedicate the time I’d be spending on getting good at Starcraft and being ‘in’ on the scene and news, to learning Korean, BBoyin, and realizing my dreams instead of being passive. But you’ve gotta WANT it, if you wanna improve.
I want, and I really need: closure. I’ve gotta figure out how to feel in regards to dear SC:BW, TL as it was, TL as it is, and eSports as a whole. TL isin’t just another of those ‘trending’ social network and media sites, it’s a fuckin awesome community where the point is Strarcraft. It’s got the most civilized, refined, and dignified posting habits of ANY and ALL internet forums I’ve ever seen. And NaDa’s Body ;p

FML I’ve got a tear now and I haven’t even started sifting through the rubble and carnage: what’s left of the Starcraft Brood War scene. Imma go get another Kreik. This is bad I can’t find it.

Mmmh cherry beer. Next stop, “right into the danger zone” (Midnight Express – ‘Danger Zone’). This’ll be hard, but I’ve got to do it, I’ve gotta have closure. It’s almost midnight, so imma go watch the fireworks, then I’ll come back, post this, and live free.
Well the rest of the family went to go see the fireworks up-close in town, but my Dad and I stayed home, and talked. Insights on these guys I cherish and my heroes having no prospects, and their world collapsing around them: they’re celebrities, they should live their moment of glory. What do Olympic athletes do once they get too old? In the same way they’ll probably go to the same sort of jobs they’d have gotten anyways, they’ll be superior ‘people’ people, and they’ll kick ass at eventual nostalgia revival tournaments.
