I do not have the qualifications to produce a video game. I have essentially zero programming experience, and barely more than that in artistic experience. The way I see it, designing a video game consists of three parts: game concepts, artistic renderings, and computer programming that holds it all together.
That being said, what are my qualifications? I'm a freshman in college at UCSD (Go Tritons!); my current major is. I watch the Day[9] Daily pretty consistently, and have for the last 250 dailies or so (I went back and watched some of the old ones, too, during breaks and such). I've played a lot of video games in my lifetime — dating back to the Sega Genesis, and many of the games I've played are console games. In the area of computer games, significant players in my video game history have been Starcraft (Vanilla and BW), Warcraft 2, Age of Empires 2, Disciples 2, Civilization II-V, Elder Scrolls III-IV (with V making its way into my life very soon), Warcraft 3, and Starcraft II (not to mention a brief love affair with WoW).
This would not count as a qualification, but it deserves mentioning: more than anything else, the game concepts have always been what fascinated me about video games. The beautiful scenery of the Elder Scrolls series is great; the visceral pleasure of murdering enemies in cold blood from Halo is addictive; but Starcraft-esque strategy and decision-making has always been the draw. When the computer isn't on, I consider the intricacies of this strategy, not just for the sake of being better when I return to the game, but for the sake of understanding it. In other words, brainstorming is one of my favorite activities, and this blog is where I'd like to do it for a little while. If you'd like, take a read. If not, I know that Team Liquid has fairly strict policies concerning creating junk threads, but I would hope in the blogs section they allow posters a little more freedom. And as a reader, you have every freedom to go do something other than read what I have to say.
