so recently in my free coaching thread i had a person msg me who was in silver league as terran. up until now i have only ever taught diamonds and some masters and so i didnt know exactly where to start.
with a zerg its easy to explain basic mechanics and fix problems zergs have that other races dont but see instant results. with protoss its a bit more complicated but its easy to give them some basic build orders and unit comps as well as timings and the a move style of protoss can carry them a bit.
terran is a dif animal. a poorly microd terran army dies to even small numbers of banes. tvt is a nightmare and i often see terrans have 1 hour long games that both sides never made over 30 scvs in.... out of this need for micro while macroing i think i have come up with a method to help terrans who are of any level (im talking to you never ever drop 50 apm masters terrans who max out and then hope to just win) to improve on all fronts....
"necessity is the mother of invention" this is the basic theory behind it all. deprivation of units is how i apply this to starcraft. heres some examples illustrating my premise.
in zvt you generally use tank marine to fight bane ling muta. yes you have thors but thors are not always used and just from a basic standpoint marine tank is theoretically all you need to win zvt. the avg method a lower level but more specifically lower micro skilled terran handles this is by just stimming and running while the tanks hopefully handle the banes so the marines can now run in and fight. this is obviously bad for many reasons but primarily because a well controlled zerg can just pull back with minimal losses or continue and mutas clean up the tanks 100 percent of the time which leaves you almost dead for sure upon the next attack. the other side of the coin is when you see a terran who DOESNT EVER DROP. yes those of you who are not high masters there are terrans who NEVER DROP and are fighting within gm level points. its basically a smack in the face of other races that cant do the same harass but i digress... when a terran who poor multitasking drops his macro slips. this negates the value of the drop. its actually prob more detrimental to a terran to multi drop and stack minerals or slower tech even if hes killing a few drones and there are many terrans who just intelligently focus on macro. the fact is that by doing this you are limiting yourself and not even playing to the races potential.
this is the summary of this... micro and macro of even inferior units but done BETTER can win you battles. this is a skill that everyone needs. if you just make more shit vs collosi you can win even if you have no vikings. flanks, spread, all of this can make up for this and this is my basic theory.
if you want to get better and play the game the way its supposed to be played as a terran you must do drops and macro and poke the front of bases at all times. this is imo what makes a terran, a terran. units like tanks or vikings a lot of times "cushion" if you will, the learning that terrans have when laddering and improving. they rely on this too much and thus miss out on other important factors of the game.
here is how i propose anyone who is a lower league terran attempting to get better does so....
every game no matter what race, you are only allowed to make barracks units. this means ghosts reapers the works. you are not allowed to scan bases, EVER. you must do other methods of scouting such as reaper and just doing drops. when fighting protoss you can only use ghosts no vikings. cant use tanks or thors vs zerg. also, you cannot make turrets to stop small air harass such as banshee or void ray all ins. you can only use 1 turret for detection and thats it (you can turret for mass air such as mutas but not for things like banshee or to stop drops from entering bases). NO PDF. you must learn to zone and react. you can make ravens and medivacs but only ravens to stop banelings and DTS you cannot use them for anything offensive
this stuff is important. all of it. by not scanning you rely on other methods of scouting that naturally increase your awareness and make you take notice of things you wouldnt otherwise take notice of. by having to use a reaper or drop to scout your macro will be weaker when scouting and thus you must increase your speed in order to make up for this. when fighting collosi with JUST marines and marauders you must problem solve this by doing weaking the overall army via constant army trading or constant drops. maybe you flank with marauders and kill the collosi or rely on mass emp. these things HELP. yes you will be weakening your army strength by not having these tech units but much like in sports, when you train with weight vests or ankle weights, upon taking those off you just FEEL and ARE faster and stronger. this is my theory behind this training method. when you finally add tanks and vikings into the mix, the games will be much easier and your overall skillset will be much much better.
im just gonna leave the blog with this. there are many ways to get good at starcraft. good is a relative term. to some good means masters or diamond or just beating your friend. to others good means strat while other say good means fast.
rts is a game about speed real "time" "strategy" basically half the game is strat and half the game is speed (basically....). if you only have strat then this is the way to get speed

Fuck that shit, I just make marines.
I want to be MKP when I grow up

Are you trying to be Day[9]? Sounds like a long winded Funday challenge.

i have already had people doing this with great success. this isnt for someone whos already happy with how he plays. this is for someone who wants to improve but doesnt know how to analyze his play well enough or is missing mechanical things that he lacks a training method for.
all pro athletes use similar methods. i myself learned to shoot a basketball with a paper plate tied to my guide hand. i doubt any of you can argue with the results as i can go out after years of never practicing and shoot 90 from the line. it works i have peoples promotions to speak for it

I didn't say it couldn't help... I think you missed the point. Oh well.

oh no the comment isnt lost on me but unlike day9 i have a real reason for this method and i just dont want this comment to downplay it thats all
this REALLY works

./living proof so far.
Started at lower MMR silver (as I played bronzes on occasion) and that was three days ago. Now I am regularly playing platinum and already in gold league.
A few even ask what I am doing in gold when my multitasking is on fire ( microing two drops away from banelings, expanding, adding production, upgrades, workers, marines, medivacs all in <15 seconds).
His coaching sessions on how to approach the particular style of Terran and 'set the pace of the game' really help, and by only making bio and microing them to be effective against better tech will get me to the point where when I re-add vikings vP, the collosus will basically get sniped before doing any damage.

Marines makes terrans instantly better lol.
Thanks for the great article anyways
|
this isnt a completely terrible approach either (just in actually being able to win games) because solid players should easily beat terrible players employing this method due to better fundamentals, so it can help in some ways
|
I can attest as a P player, when I feel my control is slipping I just 4 gate every PvP I come across.
Like, Ladder is cool and all for laddering, but for practice and stuff its also really cool
And improving one aspect in one matchup like control does overflow to other MU's.

my methods work and im a really really really good coach

If you really wanted to get this idea out there, id recommend writing a really nice detailied article about your style (even more so than this one) and posting it in the strategy forum where most players go instead of putting it in the blogs.

No don't let the world that reads TL find out my strat!! xD
I agreed with sock to put some detailed scouting info, how to engage certain tech or make it ineffective (IE templar, collosus, infestor, broods), and mindset to playing the game to give a more clear understanding. You did well in your lesson with me, but I've had to work through some of my own struggles on how to drop and pacing two pronged attacks to hit at the same time.

hmmm yeh idn if its a strat man. its a training method. thats it. people are very close minded. im not one to value the aesthetic parts of pretty much anything and i would rather take something for its value then care about how nice it looks. it upsets me when the grammar police come out to trash a great idea for example
ill prob end up doing it, i have received a bunch of msgs telling me how they love the idea and have been trying to think of ways to improve
