Many members of TeamLiquid are no doubt saddened by the fact that the end of Korean professional SCBW is slowly but surely approaching. Personally, the only thing that saddens me more is that there are many members of TeamLiquid who never experienced the drama and entertainment that BW provided. This isn't because of an elitist sense of superiority but it always feels good to share something amazing with others who also have a passion for gaming. I made this video to remind BW veterans of the good old days of SCBW and fill them with nostalgia. At the same time I hope it also fills newer members of the community with curiosity which will lead them into the old BW VOD archives. Hope you enjoy!

Yeah, I think it would have been awesome if it could have ended on something positive, like Jangbi's OSL win. Something like, "What if I told you that Cinderella stories really do exist? That the lowest of the low can climb and fight their way to the very top?"

There was a large number of events I considered but had to decide on a final few to actually use. Casy's OSL run (the most cinderalla-y story in BW) almost made it but I cut it out at the end =/.
Is this the same "redtooth" that invented the strat of attacking your own spire, so that if the Terran scanned it, it would look like it was 200 or so hitpoints behind what it was- so the mutas would come out faster than he would anticipate? That thread was just wall to wall comedy!

SC2 will never be like Broodwar. I think it's fun, and I'm looking forward to following the scene and I hope it grows and flourishes. But honestly, it just doesn't have the same BW magic for a lot of reasons. I won't begin to enumerate them, because as a stand alone game- SC2 is really good. But as a replacement for BW it just doesn't stack up. Too bad the graphics were just a few years too early to really hold up in the HD era- but I guess we should all be glad that the whole scene was just so unique and exciting to watch. A real treat for anyone who was following. (And still is... of course)

Nothing is ever the same, but I think that in the end, it is the players and the community that made BW great. By us remembering and watching the story lines and the games, BW will always live. In the end though, after years and years, SC2 will have its own life along with its own stories.
When SC3 comes along, we will be making videos like this for SC2 and some of us will be crying at the history of the thing that we love. I have watched this vid multiple times and the more I watch, the more amazed I am. I was not around for most of this (yeah, I played since SC1 Vanilla, but was unaware of the community and scene until the last couple years) but since joining up I have learned a lot about the BW history. As a baseball fan, I know the history and the past story lines are what make the game great.
I am sorry BW fans for the days that may soon come, but in the end these videos, tributes, and remembrances will always be there.

Its all there in the tlpd, as well as the forum posts. The savior vs bisu live report thread is especially good. Hopefully the video can get people to dig around a bit. Watching the boxer vs iloveoov finals is amazing even today.

god i remember watching the blackout game live on some horrible korean stream. and since i dont know korean i had no freaking clue what the kespa lady said. i sat here for an hour freaking out. epic times were epic /tear BW
The outage that happened in that Flash v Jaedong match- where Zerg was defending the lower left with Dark Swarms, Lings and Ultras, while Flash was taking a third- was easily one of the most epic ZvT's I've ever seen. The fact that this game did not conclude was an absolute tragedy.
(It was Flashes "hand warmer" heater that kicked on, and aced some circuit breaker or something- in that match where MBC didn't even have a stage but a Blue Screen room for the players to play in... man... talk about an epic fail in all aspects of presentation.)
MSL 2052. MSL Forever! I can't let myself believe that the BW professional scene will end, that SC2 will take its place... because it would just leave me incredibly saddened. SC2 is good, but I have so many magical memories watching BW on TV in Korea, not knowing a lot about the game but being incredibly fascinated by the game and it's players who I began to recognize and admire. How much depth there was to it in comparison to my single player experiences. How... just cool it was!
...thanks for the video. it leaves me a little teary eyed...

This is the same for me. I had to be like 9 when the BW scene got kicked off in 2001. Makes me sad that I missed out on so much. BW forever.
Kinda sad when u think about it, once bw is gone I don't even think I'll watch any esport, bw keeps me here on TL, so I watch sc2 quite a bit cuz its here.. but I never really look forward to it like I do bw.
THe end of bw is approaching, but still there is a lot of good stuff to take place in the e-sports and with the korean proteams with SCII, and hopefully it provides us a lot or at least the same as BW did for once again 10 years.
I think sc2 didn't have the same effect on many people mainly because the players aren't as well respected. I think if you really respect someone and think of them as your hero, when you see them work so hard through a tournament and finally end up winning the finals, it just brings tears to your eyes. Sigh, I really miss watching Savior play, it's a shame really..

I think it's also partially the oversaturation of the scene - there's no special air to an MLG or an IEM or even a GSL because "Welp, there's another one in a month, and there's three other big tournaments this month so..."
It was OSL or MSL in BW that mattered. There were 3 of each a year, and they were so hyped it felt.. I dunno, there's just so much going on in SC2 right now it feels like it's impossible to really keep track of it all and even if someone loses one big tournament, they can just go knock a big one down the next week.
I remember watching this game sAviOr vs Bisu MSL Finals and Bisu using his famous corsair/dt combo beating sAviOr who had a 83% win rate in the match up and also had just recently beat Nada to reach first to 6 consecutive titles. When Bisu won, I was literally in tears. I hope sc2 will have the same effect on people some day.

Yeah I think you're right.. it's really hard in the sc2 scene to become a bonjwa just because tournaments come so quick and in result the fanbase is so divided because there are people winning everywhere. I think we really need to redefine the term "bonjwa" in accordance to sc2 scene (maybe it's no longer to define someone who dominates the scene for a long time, but rather just multiple titles within one year), this way there will be more fans for one person and resulting in more emotional involvement when that person hits the finals. I mean, some people may already have the same opinion for who is current bonjwa but it is certainly not agreed by the majority.
I'm actually going backwards. From being a huge SC2 fanboy into SC:BW, its such an amazing game that I just wanted to see how it was like now I'm hooked. thank you so much for this, the Nal_Ra annoucement made me tear a bit.
I'm not a BW player and I really haven't followed it, just seen clips on youtube. So I can't really talk about this. However I would like to share some words of comfort. Sc2 is here, and growing in such a big way! The SC enterprise is expanding and getting bigger. Although there might be many diehard BW fans out there, I think BW has had its glory (look at how many years it survived and how many fans it has still) However I would say sc2 is a welcome transition, and is one of the reasons that I am on TL at all or even know about BW. I'm happy for my BW brethren that they can transition in to Sc2 and I know many have obviously. I think we can look forward to many more fantastic moments, as illustrated by MLG Providence! And I'm sure many BW fans say that sc2 isnt as epic or as great. Well, was sc1 epic and fantastic the first year it came out? I say, give sc2 a chance and I'm sure it will give memories and experiences that are at least as epic. It's just gettin started
Oh, and I think SC2 does not spell the demise of BW. I think that happened by itself However the process is obviously accelerated when sc2 came out. I'm sad that BW is approaching its end, but I'm happy its transitioning in to sc2 I think it can give us 10 more years of amazing moments.

honestly speaking, the process accelerated because of the match fixing scandal not SC2.

Well i disagree with you on that. The BW scene was quite alive, but small in comparison to sc2, when sc2 hit the beta phase. Back then, Korea and the two Starleagues were kind of the engine, that kept foreign BW running on and on. And since there was no plan to abandon korean pro-broodwar, the foreign scene would easily survived as long.
Very nice vid, to me Broodwar will still remain the superior game somehow, though i know im quite nostalgic on the topic and thus a bit biased. But what the hell; sc:bw meant and will mean something to me, that no other game will ever achive, and thats´s fine for me. However i think many of "us" will have to move on. If the korean pro-teams switch over, broodwar will stop to be an e-sport and be just another not-played-anymore title. While i still occasionally think about switching back to BW, there will be no opportunity to do so in the future, because i expect the foreign scene to completely stop existing one the heart of broodwar esports stops pounding.
That beeing said, im more than unhappy about this development, but i guess we all knew it was eventually gonna happen since WOL was announced.
I don´t bear any grudge against sc2 in general or the new players, that did not know BW, but matter of fact IS, that SC2 spelled the demise for BW. Huge prizepools attracted pro players and guys like "you-and-me" switched for various reasons.
Seriously though, that was really good. It made me a little sad inside. So much history full of passion, competition and friendship. I hope that if it does end, that there will be a documentary on the entire span of BW.
This is too sad, things aren't over yet.. i hope that things can go on past what some people here seem to think too. This is the kind of reason why it should, it's had history, real history that millions connected to. Surely enough people in Korea have the interest to keep it going as a niche like it has done for so long already.. it already defied all expectations. It's not aged any worse since 5 years ago. If a game truly is sport-worthy, why can't it continue?
This is what i think Milkis was talking about with his' only real eSport' comment. Western eSports has never even come close in actual feelings. No one will care in 10 years who won a million in a DotA2 tournament.. until there's the right game players and more importantly non-players can come together and truly appreciate then it will all feel subpar. Less that's said about SC2 the better imo.. take away the name and i'm not sure if it would be any more than another niche RTS community.

Even if the GSL was spaced out it wouldn't be the same, the game itself is part of all of this, the game so many loved that it grew into what it did. It wasn't forced, it happened because it was the right game. For people to just think it will happen all over again simply because a game has the same name is crazy imo at least. Personally watching SC2 does nothing for me, and it doesn't matter if any of my favourites switched.. because it's something totally different. Hard to explain but that's how i feel.
Everytime I see sAviOr I feel sad a little. Prodigy, outcast, forgotten. He was the hero that Gotham deserved but didn't need at the time. And then the Joker corrupted him. It makes me sad.

And Cele, i don't think we should dismiss it as simply nostalgia.. the last OSL and the final was amazing. I still go on iccup/fish and still feel the excitement of a win as much as ever. It's all still happening and there's even a massive new group of RTS viewers who might get curious and experience the game.

I totally agree with the OP I wish that I knew more about professional SCBW when I was playing it, so much epiczz that I missed.
I wish that I could have the same passion that the TL veterans have about BW, and it really saddens me that it is slowly coming to a close. I really enjoy watching it every time it is on. At least PL season is starting up soon going to be watching as much as I can :D :D

May I ask why BW is coming to an end? I have never followed the BW scene but from my understanding, BW is still huge in Korea. As big as ever, almost as if SC2 doesn't even exist. Why this sudden ending?

Wait, what? Proleague is due in 5 days guys. Sure it´s not as big as before but im far from declaring it dead. As of now, the moments of SCBW far outshadow the reaches of SCII. The crowds were better, the atmosphere was so intense, and the tensions were not even describable even for me as a viewer on the stream 4 in the morning. Let's just hope SCII brings the same nostalgic feeling.

SCII is too new for nostalgia. Give it some time.
Amazing video, really well done. I cried manly tears.
I've gotten into Teamliquid and Starcraft 2 a year ago. Tho I played BW when I was a young 14 year old I never seriously got into the game and never knew what it manifested into. One of the regrets I have right now is not being part of the amazing decade of greatness. As a crazy sc2 fan, thank you people who followed BW and bringing up the level and high success of esports.
So amazing. Gah, so much BW nostalgia, I feel bad that I was born when I was. I wish I was there for the ride, but damn, I'm happy that I was there for the end of it
Unless Korea has had a MASSIVE surge of new SC2 players; it's not popular enough to justify proleague replacement. I don't know why people think this is likely. If it was implemented in any way it would be secondary because theres not as much of a market, simple as that.
PL and OSL still had great ratings. It's still popular. There's been setbacks but it wasn't always this big in the past either, so no reason why it would continue. More likely than dying is just eventually settling at a level. There's plenty of niche sports that didn't just disappear after an initial surge. The sequel is irrelevant to this because it's simply a different game, treating it as a transition is just stupid considering how different it is.
edit: eSports as a whole has been in a downturn too. It's lucky there is KeSPA to stabilize things. Clearly; they are positive enough about the situation that they raised Team 8's salaries, suggesting sponsors may be on the horizon already.
The idea that Blizzard is going to swoop in and pay the entire scene to switch is silly really. The whole ideals the organizations have of eSports doesn't even match... KeSPA is a non-profit attempting to just act as a governing body while Blizzard and it's organization with Gretech/other tournaments shows it's entirely for profit. So who would they even pay in this supposed deal and why would they do it? KeSPA will likely negotiate to be able to broadcast SC2 within their non-profit system and the GSL will just be separate.

yea this longer-than-usual off-season has really got people worried for no reason.
i just cant follow the logic of "terrific PL final -> best OSL final in years -> longer-than-usual off-season -> OMG BW IS DEAD"
I would love to see a whole documentary or something on each one of them. I'll miss BW. Old Boy was heart wrenching sometimes. It's tough to watch the old greats slowly die away.
I never followed SCBW around much apart from the Intel Invitationals on GomTV and two TSLs. But that video was great to watch and funniest of all, I recognized Manifesto's voice right away from his commentary on TSL. xD
Whenever I hear about bw history I am always jealous of those who were around to witness it. I would love to go back and experience the eras of Boxer, Savior etc... and while vods exist...not being familiar with the context in which those games were played means there is something missing.

So much talk about nostalgia but it's not nostalgia that drawn me towards bw , it's the game it self , the people , what if I told you Broodwar is a dream created by many gamers and through these gamers develop the most enjoyable game in the world which is starcraft broodwar .
Bw for life as always , It's the korean scene and the hardworking pro gamers who keeps bringing me back to broodwar , no other fps and rts can topple down broodwar throne in my heart . Number 1 always forever.
EDIT: I was going to post the picture of boxer crying after losing to oov in the OSL, since the video reminded me of it, but I was unable to find it ;_;
The one about nal_ra really got me, especially after watching old boy. That series was just so unexpectedly depressing at times, watching the last grasp of a former great. Although all the stories are great storylines, there were just so many in BW, in just about every league. I'm going to miss BW when its gone, but for now, there's still a proleague season coming up, and I'll enjoy it while I can.
T_T seeing such an excellent trailer really makes me wish that there would be a follow up to it, especially a lot of the older history that most members of TL don't know.
What if, after all of this, BW would still be here?
I mean, it stayed for 10 years and people are still interested in it. Companies might not be into it anymore, but fans who watch it still care for it. I mean, they had negative reactions to the changes of no Ace & BO5. That would mean they still care because they want BW to cater for their want.
Maybe it's just wishful thinking. But I think BW will only die if there won't be fans watching it or there will be another catastrophe like the magnitude of that of Match-fixing scandal. If Kespa can find a sponsor for the PL and Team 8, then there certainly will be hope. Hell, there won't be any doubt in my mind that BW will live on if they can obtain a sponsor now even during the coming off-season.
still beats me why savior received a life time ban for a couple of thousand dollars.... i mean come on, most of the suspensions in real sports are 2 years topsssssssss
Damn i just love this vid. Anyone else feels like it shows some spectator potential in Starcraft that other sports don't even have? It's really unique..
The saviOr clip was the most emotional for me, not because of the match fixing, I never was able to stay angry with him for as long as others, mostly because he will forever remain my favorite player and everyone makes that one fatal mistake in there life.
But just remembering his fall from grace will always get me. Waking up and learning that my Brood War hero was forever gone killed me.
BW was (and still is) an awesome game. If it wasn't, nobody would be into Starcraft 2 as much as we are today.
It's great to appreciate our roots sometimes. When I first heard about Broodwar pro gamers, I was curious but slightly turned off because staying up late for korean broadcasts didn't really appeal to me and I'd never heard of team liquid or anything. Now I wish I had paid more attention to the scene back then.

It certainly did :-) Thanks, it's exactly what I needed today.
cant even watch it because i know i will fucking fall apart if i do. T.T
its so bittersweet because even though it feels like it is finally time for BW to die and everyone switches over to SC2, i secretly wish SC2 would promptly die and everyone would go back to BW.
tbh, I rly laughed at the savior reference;d sadly didn't get a single other one until reading the text underneath the clip afterwards>_>' Never really followed the korean scene, yep, that's my excuse!
Just want to bump this since i love the vid and watch now and then.. no other sport for me creates this emotional attachment to single players like this does. How much i wanted Jangbi to win the last OSL, it really got to me. I just don't want it to end any time soon. I know the season continues and we enjoy it. But already MSL gone it makes things feel bad.. but this doesn't need to end yet. Hopefully the ratings stay steady and we can continue for a long time yet.
I wanted to bump this awesome and sad video since there are a ton of tributes and hype videos going on for the OSL. I hope that some people who have not seen this take a look at it.
