Hello all,
Well, this weekend I ordered a new processor (AMD Phenom II X6 3.2ghz) and motherboard + RAM to go along with it (8gig kingston hyper X for 40$, good deal)
I'm always careful to check if things are compatible and this motherboard had like 20 ads of "works with AMD Phenom II X6 processors!" plastered all over the place I bought it from.
Awesome, cheap deal : 330$ total including S&H + warranty for a much needed upgrade to my 3 or 4 year old dual core and DDR2 RAM
So I got them yesterday, put them in and booted it up. I heard the sound and thought "Awesome booted on the first try" because motherboards usually don't do that for me when I install them
Then, on the start up screen I see "This CPU is not supported by this motherboard blah blah"...
I'm thinking wtf? guess I need a bios upgrade.
After a while of messing around with it I give up and go see on the internet again. After googling until I find some obscure processor compatibility site I see :
Motherboard X, compatibility
. . . AMD Phenom II X6 . . . 2,8ghz 2,9ghz end
Yep. That motherboard supports that type of CPU alright... BUT NOT THE ONE YOU BOUGHT AHAH! (that's what I imagine the website is telling me).
So yeah, I called the website and tell them the problem and ask for a refund/exchange and they will only refund me 85% because the motherboard is opened... I had to buy a new motherboard (getting it early week so now I'm stuck with a shitty mac laptop with no games or programs on it for 4-5 days). It's around the same price but with the -15% and the S&H + having to send back the other motherboard I'm losing like 40$ for nothing.
I've never even heard of a problem like this (the CPU needs 125W and the motherboard only supports 95W apparently, which makes the difference between the 2,9Ghz and 3,2 Ghz...
I'm not super pissed off because it's my own fault but what an obscure way to fuck over someone. No warning or anything on their website or specs. It's not like I picked a random motherboard.
Guess I'm eating rice next week to make up for that 40$.

I've been stuck with the crappy mac laptop for about 3-4 years now lol. You'll manage

$40 isn't that bad, people have made much worse decisions.
And you're right that is pretty weird. What motherboard model is it?

One good strat for tasty food that's inexpensive is to go to the store and spend like $4-- get a $1 packet of hotdogs and spend about $3 on various vegetables. Each night, chop up a hotdog and some veggies and fry them, then put them on top of your rice. Add soy sauce and you're good to go. It gets old pretty quickly, but not as quickly as plain rice.

Bought an MSI board this time instead lol...

lol wtf Asus...
I don't want to Monday morning quarter back here (I can honestly see how you ended up in this position), but it's so important to fully research a motherboard before buying. All too often I think people just look at the socket and the features like how many USB ports. Motherboards with the same tech specs can have radically different performance, you've got to look up those benchmarks and reviews!
On a related not 3.2 phenom II quadcore is going to be blazing once you get the new board. I have a 2.1 in my laptop, and with all the shit I do (gaming, 3D rendering, running multiple Virtual Machines at once) I've rarely been able to max out my CPU performance. Was certainly worth the money to go quad over dual core.

I feel your pain. I recently bought an HD Radeon 6970 that was compatible with my mobo just fine, but was too fucking long to fit in my case.
By the way, PM me if you want to buy a Scout 910 case and an Nvidia GTX460.

Yeah my CPU was getting to be pretty much the minimum requirement for any game that came out recently and maxed out it's performance quite fast.
BTW it's 6 core : AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition

Okay, yeah that's going to be absurdly fast.

"I'm not super pissed off because it's my own fault " "Computer upgrade mistake"
Don't you love it when someone takes a long post, eagle eyes 1 thing and makes a negative post without understanding the connotation of said post?

Installing my new MOBO tonight, hope it works fine this time lol...
P.S : I fucking hate macs. Optical drive is broken despite me having actually never used it... googled it, it's common for macs to refuse blank dvds and cds because of that. Awesome, I wanted to burn something but I can't. The computer is going like "nope, try again! LOL!"
Oh, I have a bunch of stuff I want to back up and put on my external HD... "This folder cannot be modified." when I try to put a file on it. "Rofl better use that small USB key and transfer things 1 at a time to your PC first!"
Jesus... to think if I wasn't forced to buy this I could have a good windows laptop for 1/3 of the price.

Did you download the wrong ram?

You sound like a thrifty filipino Blazing hahaha! (I'm filipino, and this is what we do, still tastes awesome).

Woot finally works! And it's 3 times as loud as my old intel processor (I forgot AMD had loud CPUs but you don't forget too long ahah)

well i had bought my motherboard off newegg and it did say in the specs it would support CPUs up to 95W only.
