Few outside the players themselves have had the impact on Brood War that Klazart had. For many, he was the first faltering step into a world of fierce competition that would blossom and grow into the vibrant esports scene we know today.

Sadly, Klazart no longer commentates regularly, and there are few who could live up to him. He has left us something though; his YouTube account is extensive and varied, a myriad number of games, every matchup on hundreds of maps.

From that incalculable archive, we can rebuild him. We can make him faster, stronger, better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZI8ab42Doc

It seems fitting to post this during a Blizzcon extravaganza that only the current esports-mania could fuel… with Hallowe’en on the horizon, I have spent long hours in my lab. I have been hard at work, constructing a Frankenstein’s monster of a Klazart.

May God forgive me, for I have trespassed in his domain, and I feel no guilt.

+ Show Spoiler +
The clip contains over 250 individual voice samples of Klazart’s, cut (at great length) from YouTube videos.

This is how I like to think SC can be.

Update:

I sent Klazart an email to tell him about this topic. I don't really know what I expected, but I guess I just wanted him to know that, even if he's not commentating anymore, he still brought a lot of us into something we enjoy.

He replied today, and I hope he doesn't mind my posting this here:

Klazart wrote:
Wow, that must have taken a serious amount of work. Not sure what to say except that it's really nice to feel that I had that kind of effect on someone that you still remember me after all this time. Thanks, it means a lot. Makes me want to jump back into commentating, if I could. Alas, life doesn't always let us do everything we want to.

Best of luck,

Klaz.

Update Two:

If you'd like to read Klazart's response to this thread, and some insight into why he no longer casts, you can hop straight to his post here.

Thank you SirJolt. The commentary is absolutely accurate and at times brilliantly funny. This was a hell of a task and few could have done it.

Stellar. Beyond stellar. Amazing- you make the rest of us look lazy by comparison. Five out of five barely describes how outstanding this is.

To Klazart, SC both old and new and the people that love them.

Why did you get my hopes up like that OP? I'm so sad now

Anyways, awesome video! I still consider klazart to be the #1 caster; better than day9, better than tastless & artosis, and better than everyone. I would love to see him cast the GSL.

Whoah that's blasphemy. Are you implying Klazart > CombatEx? That's just absurd, now.

What a blast from the past. As someone who got into pro BW via the SC2GG casters (don't judge me!), this definitely makes me feel nostalgic!

And as many other have said: Holy cow, that amount of editing must have taken ages.

Awesome job!

Anyway, great work!

Btw can anyone explain me why there were tensions between TL and Klazart at a certain time? Wasnt there even someone who tried to imitate Klazart in a TL production? (I hope im not totally wrong on this but I only joined in 2008 and there is a hilarious Klazart imitation within my recollection) ;p

I have dreamt of this,
Klazart sliced and rearranged.
It's a miracle.

If I recall correctly Klazart entered into some Indian book contest, and asked his fans on TL to vote for him. He of course won by a huge margin, and all the other authors were mad saying that is not how democracy works. TL overreacted like they usually do with the typical YOU'RE KILLING ESPORTS attitude, but I don't think there was ever any intense animosity between them.

Would've been nice to have a backstory on Klazart since I have no idea what I just watched.

Good video, though. I'll 5/5 it.

Nice blast from the past. Very well done.

I don't know why there are so many Klazart fans out there. Cholera and Rise were waaaay funnier and Cholera was the only one over at sc2 who had any knowledge (and PsionicReaver). I liked Klazarts passion but his play by play commentary was terrible. He never knew what was going on.

But better. Klazart is perhaps the best BW caster of all time. He's even kicked his wife out of the room to commentate BW. That's how great he is.

For whatever reason klazart was the only commentator that got me interested in following a league. I used to get so pumped for the OSL and MSL finals simply because I had followed klazart's commentary. I've never gotten excited about any tournaments since klazart stopped commentating.

Yeah, despite most of them lacking in knowledge of the game (many hardcores hated (or just disliked) them because of that) they made up for it by dedication, enthusiasm and the amount of content they provdided for the english speaking community.

Mostly I am very thankful for them providing bw-content I could get my friends interested in on a fairly regular basis as they didn't like korean casts.

edit: oh sry:

Wow. On the one hand I'm thinking "Holy crap this is amazing, best caster ever in any game ever."

On the other I am thinking SirJolt has too much free time on his hands to 1) Go through the Gom archives to find a suitable game and 2) Go through a ton of Klazart's VODs to find suitable soundbites and 3) Compile everything.

I...I...I don't even know.

I have been a huge Klazart fan since early 2000's and have followed him through his ups and downs. This reminds me so much of Klazart at the height of his career: the best of the best.

From his blazingly fast commentary-APM, to his brilliant analogies, to his Amazing hype, Klazart will forever remain the greatest caster of all time in my mind and heart.

This means so much to me. Thank you.

Oh man now I am sad, I thought for a moment that Klazart once again had made one of his returns, I have really missed his casts.

Anyway it was a really well made video so thanks for making it and of course to Klazart himself for bringing me into watching Starcraft and for being one of the great casters, bringing so much passion and excitement to the games.

Haha, good spotting, I didn't get that the first time.

Either way, that's an incredible video. Everything is perfect, and definitely wants me, as someone who hadn't heard of him before this, to go out and find more of his stuff.

This is not only an awesome remembrance, but could even spark a revolution of similar style casting! I definitely wan't to hear more of it either way!!

I can't imagine how long this would have taken :S Such an incredible job!

Definitely! Either that or he is some kind of child genius who did some kind of voice analysis programming? or something like that, I can't even imagine how hard this would have been...thanks for pointing it out.

edit: and if any casual visitors see the thread like I did and wasn't sure if the video was worth watching, it is... definitely, do it NOW! And the thread is worth reading too, so many epic posts.

Wow, the effort! Im amazed.

Next task for you (or for zergsneedfood or whomever) is to do a similar video but with chills fake-klazart commentary. Do you guys remember that? SO amazing (and also brings out the question: why isnt chill commentating? He was really one of the best in my opinion).

Klazart is the sole reason I found starcraft and got exposed to this beautiful game. I remember searching youtube for something like "english SC commentaries" and I was immediately captivated by his intelligence, style, and passion for the game. I have listened to every commentary on his channel and when he would release a new one it would literally make my day. He will always be the best commentator in my book and I hope one day he returns.

It took me a long time to realize that the game on display and the game being cast were not one in the same. After realizing that, I started thinking about how uncannily similar the two games were, how past was intermingling with (relative) present, and how the game really does tell a story. And, as stories go, a narrative emerged of past folding forward like a wave drawn inexorably toward the shore, and the crashing tide of time began lapping again on very familiar sands. Eerie but fascinating, I could do nothing but watch and contemplate the nature of the universe as told by what will surely be the timeless struggle of Terran and Zerg; the God of War and the indefatigable warrior; the seasons and their change and the way things stay the same.

Klazart was one of the pioneers of bw English commentary, along with other people such as Rise, Cholera, Diggity, etc. He is commonly honored as the greatest bw commentator (along with Cholera), known for his excitement, metaphors ('nada feels the knife digging deep into his ribs'), and most of all wpm/speed, especially when a big battle was going on. No one could match how fast this man could commentate, and his intensity inspired all those watching to get involved with bw. Simply put, he and the rest of the original commentators got many people into competitive starcraft in the first place, and many people on teamliquid look back on him fondly as he might have been the one to get them into starcraft.

A while ago he stopped commentating for personal reasons, but since then he's snuck back on a couple times to some commentaries (but hasn't done one for a good while yet).

The OP took a shitload of audio files from Klazart's bw commentaries and put them onto this SC2 one. Since Nada and July were active bw players at the time Klazart commentated and are also now active SC2 players, he was able to create this commentary.

Sirjolt I have now read your blog, tried digesting it, understanding it with all my rational power.
The darkness left me alone with this nostalgic joy of what brought me here in the first place.

I've finally started playing sc2, even if I miss the bw days this just brings me joy. Thank you for this initiative, I'm only looking forward to our up and coming games more now!

I'll finish this sentimentality with a few old youtube words I laid on a klazard vod once.

I was just gonna check in on who won the game, but your voice, your excitement, you give it so much life. It's impossible to stop watching your vods.

I had forgotten to update the original post, I'll do so now.

Klaz.

I think a lot of current western commentators could learn a thing or two from Klazart's infectious enthusiasm when commentating!!

SirJolt linked me to this thread. Man it brought back some memories. I just wanted to drop by to say thanks. That was pretty awesome and also to all the rest of the well wishers here and on youtube who still leave nice messages to this day on youtube. As for why I stopped commentating and what I'm up to, here's a brief overview.

Commentating: I had a blast doing it but it took up a lot of my time since I can't do anything by halfs. If I did one commentary I'd end up doing fifty. Plus, if you want to do it properly you can't just do one commentary, you got to watch all the games and stay up to date with the scene and I just didn't have the time to keep up with it anymore.

The other problem for me was my RSI (repetitive strain) which I got from playing too many video games with bad posture and bad ergonomics. Basically fucking up my hands. Ironically it was one of the reasons why I got into commentating in the first place, since I was always a gamer and loved being a gamer it let me stay in touch with a world that I couldn't participate in as much anymore.

So when SC2 came out my RSI was pretty bad and I simply couldn't play it. And so I couldn't even learn the basics. Also it was one thing for me to commentate on pre-made vods but to actually manipulate a replay and record a vod over it was too strenuous for me.

In terms of my RSI, it's still there, and stops me from playing games beyond the occasional casual stuff. I have a physio regime and if I ever get a chance to really work at it, maybe it will get better in time. If it does, I dream of playing some RTS again, be it SC2 or its successor and who knows maybe jump into the amatuer commentary scene if I get the chance and time permits. But it's not very likely.

And as some people have pointed out. Hobbies don't pay the bills. I'm actually a qualified doctor and my work is busy as hell. I had sort of put my career on hold for a couple of years to focus on writing, which has always been my passion. Of course I spent a lot of that time doing starcraft commentaries instead of focussing on my (write)craft.

In terms of writing, some of you guys probably remember all the Authonomy drama. Looking back, that book wasn't ready. I did polish it up and got a few bites but I didn't really push to get it published beyond the Authonomy thing. I guess I saw the flaws in it and thought I could do better. Though I've periodically toyed the idea of just reading it out loud and putting it up on you tube. Since then I wrote another novel, which I finished a couple of months ago, and now I'm procrastinating sending it out to publishers. The market for new fiction in my genres is pretty tough right now, but I still love writing and enjoy it a lot.

In the middle I also wrote the script for a graphic novel. I found a brilliant artist to work on it with me who also happened to be a commentary fan. Unfortunately he got busy in life and couldn't keep putting in the time to work on it so that kind of ended up getting shelved. I don't really have the cash to pay someone else to draw it, but maybe someday.

Thing is, the genre I've always loved is Sci-fi. And that's what I truly want to write but I for some reason I got side tracked away. But I've had this epic saga in my head for like 10 years and it's evolved over time. Maybe that's what I'll write next. It's going to be my tribute to all the memories I had with BW also since the main character in it will be named Mah Jae Yoon. Sad, I know.

For those of you are interested in reading whatever I end up putting out, when I ever manage to I'll put up something about it on the youtube channel when/if I do.

So yeah, basically between my work and trying to find time to write I have no time at all to do anything else really.

Work is busy as hell. I'm specialising in Psychiatry and it can be pretty intense but very challenging also.

Mrs. Klazart is still around and is actually an insane amount of fun. Still a total noob though.

All in all, life is busy and cool and maybe not exactly how I envisoned it when I was just getting out of college but hey that's how it is.

But yeah this was nice, and thanks a million to everyone again. Hope you guys are having fun and it's great to see the pro-scene evolving and growing.

Thanks for listening.

Thanks for listening.

nice to hear from you.

Hey Klaz, good to hear you're doing alright.... Anyways,

Another psychiatrist (maybe my father ) once told me that the only way of getting happy in life is doing what you do best. You could, hypothetically, become an architect if you really worked hard, but others might have an easier time pulling the same stuff off that you'd have to work hard for. And that, ultimately, makes you unhappy. Thats why you should focus on whatever is fun AND (comparatively) easy for you. You might see where I'm going ....

You are BY FAR the best commentator this scene has ever seen. And you managed to do it while still working on other stuff at the time. Today, people do make a living of casting. And you certainly could. So, please, Mr Klazart, Sir, retuuuuuuurn!

Hey Klaz, not sure if you're still reading this thread but I wanted to let you know you're the reason I got into professional BW. I'm not sure how I stumbled upon your commentaries as a freshman in highschool, but it really sparked my interest in watching and playing BW beyond Fastest map possible. You put excitement into the game for me, and helped me realize how much passion you can have for this game. I have moved onto SC2 now but I'll never forget your casts. I hope one day you do return to cast Sc2!

(and on a side note I'm glad ayatollah khamenei removed that fatwa, who knows where you would be now if you hadn't started noticing bisu!)

Hey Can u BW guys explain to us SC2 guys, what this ispertaining to? What kinda tribute this is?

Thanks for the memories Klazart. I was part of the Authonomy army.

By the way, RSI is an umbrella term for any strain due to repetition. Perhaps you have tendinosis, like me. South Park got it wrong in that WoW episode. Carpal tunnel = numbness and tingling due to a pinched nerve. Cartman receiving Bengay is indicative of inflammation of the tendons, and not carpal tunnel tingling.

"A predominance of pain rather than numbness is unlikely to be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome no matter what the result of electrophysiological testing."

CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME : A REVIEW Gadhave S. V.1*, Moon R.S., Kshirsagar R.V. 1Department of pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, SRTM University Nanded-431606, Maharashtra.

http://www.ijprd.com/CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME _ A REVIEW.pdf

“When pain is the primary symptom, carpal tunnel syndrome is unlikely to be the source of the symptoms.”

The Value Added by Electrodiagnostic Testing in the Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19047703

There's even a book called "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!: RSI Theory and Therapy for Computer Professionals"
http://www.amazon.com/Its-Carpal-Tunnel-Syndrome-Professionals/dp/0965510999

Tendinitis is the initial inflammation of the tendons, and tendinosis (chronic tendinitis) is the failed healing, and structural change of the tendons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tendinosis

Here are 2 open-access articles on tendinosis.

Deciphering the pathogenesis of tendinopathy: a three-stages process

http://www.smarttjournal.com/content/2/1/30

Pathogenesis of tendinopathies: inflammation or degeneration?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2714139/?tool=pubmed

Race horses are susceptible to tendinitis and tendinosis, as they’re massive creatures on twig-like legs, being pushed hard. They can’t race anymore if they’re tendinosis is bad, just like you can’t game anymore.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowed_tendon

Race horses are worth a lot, so stem cell treatments have been developed to save them.

Open-access article on stem cell therapy and tissue engineering in equine medicine :

Current and future regenerative medicine — Principles, concepts, and therapeutic use of stem cell therapy and tissue engineering in equine medicine

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2629419/

They’ve worked well on horses, and I believe human trials begin this year. They’re testing it on Achilles tendinosis, I believe:

UK Stem Cell Company Cures Race Horse Tendons, Humans Next

Stem-Cell Therapy Works Wonders for Race Horses; Are Human Treatments Next?
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-05/stem-cell-therapy-humans-horse-tested-vet-approved

I wish we could petition them to get on the hand and arm area tendons quickly though. I can barely do anything with my hands =(.

This could be a future support group:,
http://www.reddit.com/r/RSI/
But it’s new, and has no regulars like an established support group like Sorehand, but Sorehand uses a mailing list format.

Good luck, and check out Autohotkey for scripting, and Vocola for voice scripting to save your hands. I’ll make a tutorial when I can.

I hope those researchers are successful.
