Thanksgiving just ended, and Fall is in full swing here in Waterloo, so yesterday I thought I'd grab my 12 megapixel point-and-shoot and snap some shots on my way around campus. I have 10 hours of class and meetings on Tuesdays located all over the place, so I figured it wouldn't be too much trouble to bring my camera along.
I start out the day getting off the #12 bus at Seagram and walking up through the newly renovated Hagey Hall (left) and the Tatham Centre (right). I also pass by one of the ghastlier buildings on campus, the brick-laden South Campus Hall (below).
South Campus Hall looks as if the Forerunners of Halo started building things out of brick. I'm pretty sure the style is Brutalism. Waterloo used to be very fond of this style. Just look up the Math and Computer building.
I then pass on down by the brand new Environment 2. I think it's one of the more attractive buildings on campus (above and below). The architecture isn't anything to gawk at but it's neat and clean, which I like.
Passing over a little creek patrolled by a Canada goose and its partner with a broken wing (above), I come to St. Gerome's (below) for my most interesting class: The Crusades. Yesterday we got to watch Kingdom of Heaven as part of class, lol.
After this first class I head back across a different bridge where I can get a good look at the brand new Quantum Nanotechnology Building, also called Engineering 4. It's pretty small and cheap: only 280,000 sq ft. and $160,000,000 to build.
I then go past the Dana Porter Library (also a monument to Brutalism). It's the quietest place to study on campus (because it serves the Faculty of Arts) and without its existence I definitely would have failed by now.
I also pass by Rod Coutts Hall, where you usually see all the younger engineering students pass by in the morning. This year is the first time I don't have a class there.
I have my lunch in the Mech Study room in Engineering 3. From that room you can see Engineering 6 (below).
All but two of my classes are in Carl Pollock Hall, which also nods its head toward Brutalism.
The last of my classes is in Engineering 5. Everyone loves to hate this building, but at the very least it is new. I didn't get a picture of the inside but it's laid out like an FPS multiplayer map.
Ahh, finally done! I got on the bus at 9:05 AM, packed a lunch and a dinner, and now 13 hours later I can go home. Time for some Starcraft! It may be Tuesday but it feels like a Funday Monday to me!
