In my previous blog I explained my problem. If you didn't read it, you should read it before continuing.
More recently I spoke to the guy at the company that loans/sells copy machines again, and he pointed out if I'm willing to remove the hole punching feature, the lease price for the model he recommends would drop to $106/month (possibility for special lease offers too). Once again, this includes service/parts/etc except for paper/staples. Paper I would get from the school. Staples are 50 dollars for a case of 15,000 (lol).
When I asked what would happen if I moved to a different location during the 5 year lease, he said he could get authorization to give me one free move... meaning they would relocate the machine to my new location for free. For additional moves, the service guy would 'wrap it up' and I would have to move it on my own.
Once again, for each copy over 3000 there is a fee of $0.0095 and for each copy not used below 3000 there is a credit of $0.0095. For 3000 copies this all works out to about 3.5 cents per copy. For reference, I think I made about 360 copies today -_- (more than usual but not a lot more than usual, I think)
I could make some copies at home and some at work to keep cost efficiency reasonably high while minimizing stress and wasted time.
I also asked him about service... they could come on afternoons after I get home or in an emergency on the weekend so that wouldn't be a big problem.
It seems like the cost is still just slightly over threshold to be obviously worth the saved stress/time... but there's also the cool/convenience factor of having a fully-functional copy machine where I live.
It takes up space though: 35-1/4" x 22-1/4" x 27-1/4"
Does anyone know how good individual 3-hole punchers are nowadays? If you are willing to spend a bit, what are their capabilities? My initial research tells me that for ~200+ dollars you can get a really nice mechanical hole punch that can go through many sheets at once... I kinda want to avoid automatic ones as I am under the impression they crap out very quickly.
I guess I could tutor a bit to cover the cost and then this becomes a non-issue monetarily :p Still I'm a bit nervous about signing into a 5-year lease for such a large item... Please, share more thoughts with me!
PS I spend a surprising amount on my job... since I started teaching I've bought 2 computer projectors, a laptop, a netbook, a 6 foot pull-down projector screen, a 4 wheel laptop/projector cart, and lots of other miscellaneous crap because I wasn't provided with the materials I need to do my job, or they were provided in a very inconsistent fashion. Having to spend money on copies in general is bullshit but I'm used to it... I'm still pretty early into my career so I'm willing to do it even though later on I probably won't be willing to :p
PPS I'm going to be the only guy on the block with a whiteboard and photocopy machine in his kitchen >o_/

Is there someone else you could possibly co-lease it with? I guess the problem with this would be that they might not be around for the full tenure of the lease. Or maybe a trail period where you could test it out then decide, cause five years is a long time to be dishing out $106 a month.
Also for hole punching, I think just a high quality one from Staples would probably get you by pretty well. Teachers always seem to be able to beast through like ~30 sheets at once with those, and they can't cost more than $50.

Yeah, like get another teacher on-board or something. If there is someone else you know well, or someone who lives near-by you might be able to ask them?? Also, how much electricity do those things use, I think it could be quite a bit.

I would leave it off most of the time, but when it's running it's my landlord who's paying :p

Haha, fair enough. What about sound issues? They can be kinda loud, and if you are living in an apartment that could be an issue.
Hmm, the more I think about it, the less feasible it seems to me. I think it could be a really cool/neat thing to have-- especially if you use it a lot. But to be honest, I don't really think photocopiers work well in residential settings lol
Also, is your school ok with you jacking paper? I think most schools would be pretty anal about all that kind of stuff.

Also, is your school ok with you jacking paper? I think most schools would be pretty anal about all that kind of stuff. In theory they shouldn't mind as long as it's being used for copies for the students (hell, it's better for them that I'm not wearing their machines. In practice, they would probably get anal like you said that they have no way of tracking if I use all the paper for that purpose or not.
Regardless, they would have no way of knowing I was doing it :p

I know my life was changed by the teachers who go the extra mile, so I am glad to see another one rose to the occasion.

I think I'm gonna get it lol.... gonna talk to them tomorrow.

Never been in a school that didn't have working copiers. That's a staple, no teacher should be spending their own money on that shit.

If your land lord is cool, maybe you can work out something with him to spread costs. Hire a guy to operate a copy shop. Something. I'm sure there's something to be done with a big fat copier like that.

If you put money into the machine and photcopy it you are also making money.
Good luck with your new investment, hopefully it does the job well and gives you little hassle.
