Went into my Wells Fargo to make a deposit today. I told them to put the money into the checking account with more money in it. Then they told me that neither of my checking accounts had money in them. So I'm like "what the hell", so I asked for someone to help me take care of this. Here's the statement:
Ending Balance as of 09/06/11: $208.68
Posted Transactions 09/07/11 BUY CASHIERS CHECK -$1,362.00 09/07/11 ADVANCE FROM OVERDRAFT PROTECTION ACCT +$1,162.97 09/06/11 WITHDRAWAL MADE IN A BRANCH/STORE -$1,362.75
Somehow, they got into their systems that a cashier's check I bought once on the 3rd was bought twice. And for different amounts of money, no less. The one with 75 cents is the only one I bought. Now my account is showing 0 and I can't make any purchase with my debit card.
WTF Wells Fargo. Anyway, I obviously disputed this as soon as I saw it at the bank and they say they'll try to fix it by tomorrow. But wow, major fuck-up on their part. And I know I'm not going to get any kind of restitution for them messing up like this. Sucks.

I've heard so many customers are leaving WF after Wells Fargo took over Wachovia. Those people used to be Wachovia customers before the take over.

While I was at university I used to work at a bank, mistakes like this happen all the time. It was a while ago, but screw ups I can remember include:
- Client A calls up to check on a few credit card transactions, completely standard no issues. Client B calls up and reports their card missing, staff member isn't paying attention and doesn't refresh the account details properly and cancels the credit card account of Client A. Client A was on holidays overseas and did not have any other credit cards. Not good.
- Client deposits cheque for sale of a property. Staff member deposits the cheque into the account of the Client as interest accidently. No one gives it a second though until tax time in the next year when the tax man send a "wtf" letter to the client claiming they are not declaring their income.

I wouldn't even think about trying to sue a bank over such a trivial amount of money. It will get fixed, but it may take a while depending on the competency of the staff member that is addressing the problem.

Make sure you stay on top of them with this. Just keep calling or even better just show up in person. They should be able to fix it quick but do not wait. Double and triple check to make sure they correct it right.

Sigh, I hate when stuff like that happens. Threaten to close your account. Like, tell them "No, screw this, I'm done, close my account and give me all my money please." Getting your money back is much harder if you don't.
Otherwise they just don't take you seriously, and it could take weeks to get it fixed.
My bank once screwed up and charged me double for a check. It took like 3 visits and them saying each time "yeah we'll fix it", and they never did. I finally went back and said "sorry, I'm done, close acc, etc", and BAM all of a sudden they were very helpful, and my money was returned roughly 20 minutes later.

Most banks fuck up with the simplest tasks. If it's something that has a potential to be fucked up (i.e. anything out of your ordinary withdraw and deposit), you'd better prepare for the worst.
Do you remember the teller who performed your transaction? I'd report them to the branch manager. As someone mentioned above, always threaten to close your account.

I had Wachovia for the longest time, and once WF took over, I just got pissed off at their shit and took my money to a credit union lol. Originally had free student checking with Wachovia, and a savings account I didn't really use. WF secretly turned my savings account into some other account, charging me interest or a fee or something (while before I was charged none). I didn't even know they did this until I got an overdraft notice on my savings. So I was like "fuck this shit, I'm going to a credit union, and have them pay ME interest", and that was that.

man I had 500$ in over-draft fees once and they wouldn't help me out :/ This totally sucks. I'd report whomever did this to you.

Threaten to leave, wait for a form of compensation. Then leave.
