Togepi.

Togepi is a "normal" type Pokémon that looks somewhat like a chicken made out of flesh and still partly in its egg. She (the togepi that I have in Platinum) is 3.3 pounds or 1.5kg, and stands proud at 12 inches (.3 meters) tall.

Most of us, however, just know togepi as that one pokemon that hatches from an egg that some weird guy randomly gives us.

That is what she used to be to me. Now, however, she is, and forever will be, so much more.

I write this blog (my first one, but this is so important and meaningful to me that it warranted me starting a blog), because earlier today in my adventures of Pokemon: Platinum version, I, wielding PHILUP, a level 30 prinplup, and HERMAN, a level 21 Kadabra, along with a level 21 Geodude, a level 21 Gastly, and a level 21 bird something, witnessed a miracle. I used to not be a God-fearing man, but now, I don't know what to think.

(the miracle occurs over halfway down if thats all you wanna read -.-)

You may have noticed that I only mentioned 5 pokemon above. That is because the other spot was taken up by that annoying little egg, that I know turns into a Togepi, and that I planned to, like in every other version I played, basically just stow away in the depths of my Box 1 as soon as it hatched. As it seemed, Fate had other plans.

Walking into Hearthome city, fresh outta battling the monsters along the route, I went straight to a PokeCenter. My plans in this city were straightforward: heal, find the gym leader, get the badge, and get out. My Keikaku this time around was similar to the times in the other cities, and the plan had worked before.

After thanking the nurse at the pokecenter for healing my pokemon, and 2 squares before I walked out, I witnessed the gift of life be bestowed upon the egg. At the time, I was angered, because the cutscene for this is ridiculously long like basically everything else in the game, and I was already as far away from the pokecenter PC as I was going to get. So instead of depositing the newly hatched Togepi to forever be in the Limbo of Box 1, and in it's place taking another lame level 10 something that would probably not get used, I said 'fuck it, I'll do it after I beat the gym leader'. So I left, completely unaware of what some higher power had in store for me.

I jumped on my bike and rode to the gym, only to discover that someone was waiting at the door. Upon conversing with the fellow, I learned that the gym leader for this city, a "Fantina", was an avid pokemon beauty pageant competitor and that I would find her at the Beauty headquarters there.

Half expecting to be forced into some ridiculously lame pokemon beauty battle by the boys at Game Freak, I was pleasantly surprise when I went in there and was told by the miss Fantina that she would go right back and prepare for me.

As soon as she left, I tailed her and headed straight for the Hearthome City Gym. Upon entering I was told by the gym guide who is at every single gym you will ever go to, that I had to step on the doors that matched the blue symbol that I would find on the ground in each room. I was given a flashlight because for some reason the gym is kept dark (except for Fantina's Room), and went on my journey through Hearthome Gym. Like Sam Fisher, I avoided almost every trainer in there, and quickly sniped the one that I hit, until I was face-to-face with Fantina herself. I walked up to her, scoffed at her aggressive dialogue, and soon enough was face-to-face with her in a raging battle of Pokemon.

First up for me, HERMAN, the level 21 Kadabra. Knowing that this fight would be against Ghost-type pokemon, I prepared my lineup accordingly (The bird could do some damage I guess, Kadabra was probably my best hope, and then PHILUP as a last resort since I knew Fantina's last pokemon had grass-type moves that would destroy him.

First up for her, a level 24 Duskull. The first battle was uneventful; Kadabra beat the duskull taking minimum damage. Up next, and very strangely, Fantina used her 'boss' pokemon, a level 26 'Mismagius'.

Upon learning that confusion basically didn't do shit to it, and that it was faster, I immediately lost
my Kadabra in a quick roflstomping. Up next for me, the level 21 bird thing. I went in think that Wing attack could hopefully snipe it down to size so PHILUP's bubblebeam could kill it off and leave me with her last pokemon, a level 24 Haunter.

Lucky for me, it was even easier than that. I 3-shotted Mismagius with the bird's wing attack, and though I lost most of my health, still had a level 30 Prinplup against an only level 24 haunter.

So haunter came out and I thought I'd just keep the bird out to try to do as much damage as possible. Too bad haunter's speed was higher and he one shotted what was left of my bird.

Beginning to feel the pressure, I put out my level 21 Gastly, that ended up getting one-shotted by a critical hit.

Left with a geodude that could literally do 0 damage, a level 30 prinplup, and a measly LEVEL ONE TOGEPI, I could really start to see things getting bad.

I put up the geodude to experiment. I thought if Self-Destruct did damage to the haunter, then it might be able to take out a good half of its health. Sadly, this wasn't the case, and while he almost got one-shotted by the haunter, it didn't much matter because he just blew himself up right afterwards. Now it down to PHILUP and the level 1 togepi to take out the haunter. Things were looking dim.

Then they got worse.

I summoned PHILUP out to try and finish this, but in the worst stroke of luck I've ever had playing pokemon, I simultaneously attacked Haunter with a move that didn't affect him, and he got a critical strike on me. Knowing that I could perhaps take one more shot, I hoped for the best with a 'Peck' attack. It did surprisingly well. It got him down to about 1/3 health, and I hoped that it was enough. The Haunter took me down to 7 HP with his next hit, and upon discovering that I only had those berries that restore 10HP, I was ready to admit defeat. I switched to the level 1 togepi in order to buffer a shot while I healed up to only 17HP, which was sure to get killed off in a single hit anyway. But I didn't give up hope.

The miracle began there.

Haunter's first move against Togepi, which would have been used on PHILUP had I not switched, happened to be Hypnosis. Succeeding, I thought it was lucky that I would just be able to have a turn to reflect over my mistakes and get ready to try again. The luck didn't stop there.

Haunter's next move again my little napping Togepi, who in its cuteness didn't even have a single attack move, was Sucker Punch.

"HAUNTER'S ATTACK MISSES"
Despite the message, my hopes were still at rock bottom due to the fact that I couldn't do anything in that turn anyways.
While waiting for the little Togepi to wake up, and at the same time hoping that it didn't so it wouldn't have to see itself be shattered to pieces, I could do nothing this turn.

Next turn, Haunter attacks again, this time with Shadow Ball.

"HAUNTER'S ATTACK MISSES"

What a stroke of luck, I thought. If only I had had PHILUP out there in order to do damage those turns, but then I remembered the Hypnosis and I got to wondering whether or not Togepi's stats (cuteness) had anything to do with Haunter's missed shots.

Togepi woke up this round, and casted Charm.

It failed.

Next round, Haunter this time uses Confusion Ray against my 11-HP Level 1 Togepi, and Togepi is immediately confused.

Knowing that from here on out is likely the end, I cast Charm again. However, In her newly-obtained confusion, she just ended up hurting herself, and down to 8HP it was.

Next round. Haunter casts Shadow Ball once more, and, now unsurprisingly, misses once more. This basically cemented the belief in my mind that Togepi has some stat or something that greatly increases her evasiveness, because 3 attack moves in a row had failed. Anyways, I went for Charm once more, and, to my amazement, discovered that it had worked. Even more to my amazement, it stopped the 1/3 health, level 24 Haunter's next attack, which would have been a Sucker Punch.

Losing track of the number of rounds now, Hypnosis was the next move by Haunter, and it failed. However, still confused, I used charm again, and ended up hurting myself again, now down to 5HP.

Beginning to realize the insanity of the situation, I thought I'd better just get it over with and finish this. Praying for the best, I used Togepi's growl ability a few times, while realizing something strange.

Haunter was only using Hypnosis and Confusion Ray.

Then it dawned on me. The miracle of the Togepi. In her unquestionable and undeniable cuteness, Haunter exhausted the last of his Sucker Punch and Shadowball Power Points, and was now only able to use Confusion Ray and Hypnosis, neither of which are able to directly deal damage!

Not about to wait for Haunter to lose THOSE PP's and then be left with the no-PP move Struggle which every pokemon gets after losing all other PPs, I quickly switched back to my now 17HP PHILUP.

Haunter was the first to strike with his higher speed, and he cast Confusion Ray. It worked, and, in a few seconds that made my heart drop into my stomach, I hurt myself in confusion.

Time seemed to go slow to me. I can almost clearly remember watching PHILUPS health bar go down from 17.

17,16,15,14,13,12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4....................

It stopped at 4.

4 HP.

Thats it. From here, it was do or die, All I had was one more attack. If it worked, I would kill Haunter and take the Gym badge in my hardest-fought victory since starting the game.

If not... I shudder to think of the black out and loss of some 400 credits that would occur.

Lady Luck was with me.

Haunters next and last move before he met his maker was a failed Confusion Ray, due to the fact that I was already confused.

While feeling sweat from my entire body slowly drip off of me and onto my chair, I waited for PHILUP's attack, hoping, no; Praying now that he would not kill himself in confusion and that he could finish off Haunter.

When he did the latter, I nearly cried in joy.

Now some thousand credits and a gym badge richer, I left that gym. I left it and I remembered. I remembered what made this all possible. The Little Togepi that could. The Little Togepi that cleverly drained off Haunters Power Points for his Attack Moves by evading attack, after attack, after attack.

Never again will I let my Togepi rot away in some computer. From now on, My Togepi will stay with me Day and Night, 24/7. I will never let it evolve, as I believe it is already at its top form of evolution, bearing with it the maximum cuteness one could ever see in a Pokemon.

The Little Togepi that Could.

THE END.
(man I wish this coulda been my 1000th post, even if nobody reads it. It gave me a sense of satisfaction).

PS: I write this to try to prevent and reverse the widespread Togepi Abuse in Pokemon games.

Before you put her in that box - think about her feelings.

And tl;dr for you people:

+ Show Spoiler [tl;dr] +
I almost lost in a gym battle in Pokemon, but Togepi miraculously evaded the last attack moves of the last pokemon and drained all of his PP so my last, badly hurt pokemon could come in and clean up.

But read it anyways cause its epic and this tl;dr doesn't do justice

If you don't actually know the explanation, here goes. Normal type attacks don't hit ghost-type pokemon. Also, ghost type attacks dont hit normal-type pokemon. It's been a long time since I was 10 years old, but I still remember those things.

Fun story, I enjoyed it.

That is EXACTLY what I used to do when I played like Red/Blue/Gold. Hahah I remember the game not even being a challenge cause I was always 10+ levels ahead of the gym bosses -.-

But just in the past few days I've gotten back into them (Now I'm playing emerald, fire red, platinum, heart gold, then onto black/white), and I can't believe how much fun I'm having. I mean I'm enjoying this more than I enjoy playing basically every PC/Console game that I can remember since Morrowind hahaha

That being said, my basic strategy this time around is just to have 5-6 Pokemon (enough and with enough diversity to be able to take out every type while also having every HM in 1 set), and just play with those 6.

Much more diverse than my runs when I was like 8 though, when I would just literally only play with a squirtle/totodile and kadabra

You AVOID the trainers in the gym? WTF they give such good xp. And you had 0 potions to use on Prinplup? Would have been an easy win with a couple potions. But ya Togepi is a boss.
