Dear TL community,
I decided to start this up because I want to share my journey in Starcraft 2. You'll have to forgive any newbieness that shows, but I think I can be justified in at least a little, as I have only really been playing this game for a couple of weeks. Now I like this game, don't get me wrong, it just didn't start out quite as well as I would have hoped. Understand, I knew I wasn't going to be very good in the beginning, but I have had some experience with Starcraft before, so I knew a few minor things. Enough to get by. So when I started my placement matches as Protoss, I kinda figured I would get bronze, and if I managed to get silver, that would be pretty cool. Unfortunately, I made an error that I didn't know was an error until later.
There's this guy, we'll call him J, and he wanted to do 2v2 with me. So J and I did our placement matches. We won three, but then this team was tanking their MMR (I think that's the correct phraseology), and they turned out to be placed in diamond. So then I was freaking out because I knew that would mean we were going to be placed pretty high. So I didn't even want to play the last match because I did NOT want to accidentally win and get placed in master's! So we just quit immediately and got placed in diamond. By the way, that has turned out to be the totally wrong place for us..........
So then I go nervously into my placement matches in 1v1. And I actually won the first couple! So I was pretty excited about that because I had only done some games against the computer prior to that, just to try and figure out the hotkeys and stuff. Then I lost, won again, lost again, and there I am in platinum! Yeah. Platinum. I had been playing for a week. And I knew there was no freaking way I belonged in platinum. At that point I am totally flipping out and kind of upset because I wanted to be able to actually play against people at my level, not just die all the time. Then I consulted the TL website to try and figure out how this happened, and I discovered a thread by Excalibur that was full of a bunch of stuff I didn't understand for the most part, but one little bit I did understand said that your MMR can be influenced by your placement in other game types. So the stupid diamond placement in 2v2, which was a total accident, put me in stupid platinum in 1v1! Ugh.
Since then I have played like six or seven matches in 1v1 - ok I only really played probably half of those, at first I just quit immediately. Because I was afraid ok? I didn't want to be playing against no platinum dudes! J is in platinum and I have seen those peoples and they scare me. But I kept checking their leagues and noticed they started getting lower. But I'm still ranked in platinum! It makes me kind of annoyed that I'm being matched against bronze dudes and I still look like I'm way better than I am. I just want to be where I belong so I can actually start improving. *sigh* Oh well. The journey continues. Now I have to get with J and try and get our 2v2 placement to where we belong. Personally I'm hoping for gold. But J might not like that too much lol.
If you have tips for beginners, they are welcome!
Enjoying the journey, Leysha

Nothing says you can't improve if you aren't where you "belong". Just play the game, search up build orders, ask questions here if you want to improve. Being "scared" or quitting immediately is most definitely not going to help you improve.
And besides, if their leagues are getting lower, isn't that what you wanted in the first place?

If you are going to lose anyway, why not try to learn something from getting roflstomped? OR You could actually believe you can win and roflstomp the nerd on the other end?
|
blows my mind how much leagues and rankings have made people paranoid of laddering. you didn't see any of this in WC3's level-based ladder system. just play and have fun, op. don't sweat your rankings. if you get demolished a few times it doesn't matter, you'll eventually get where you need to be.
|
You are wasting your time caring about what league you are in. You are going to lose no matter what, even if you were put into Bronze.
You've played 6 or 7 games since your placement matches which I'm assuming is spanning those "couple of weeks" you've been playing? If so, you can't even begin to think you will improve like that. I try to play at least 20 ladder games a day to improve.
These people you play don't care who you are, they aren't going to tell everyone you suck, and you have to get the mindset that you will learn more from losing than winning. Best of luck.

thinking about what league you are in is just a complete waste of time, trying to get ranked lower is even worse. Just hit the fucking play button and try to improve your play every game.
more advice : you don't have to play much if you are just trying to have fun with the game, getting better without any specific competitive goal in mind besides getting promoted or beat your friend, just hit the ladder and you will land where you belong after some time that is all ! The MMR of sc2 is the best thing (and probably the only one to be really good) in Bnet2, the ranking system is just shit combined with nonsense to please the grandmas that wishes to get into sc2, don't pay attention to it, it's not reflecting your actual level of play with accuracy.

I, too, am not a fan of the laddering system, even though I rarely play. You need to stop worrying so much about it. Just play the game. Not only will you improve a lot faster that way, but you will enjoy the game a lot more. After all, it's just a game, so have fun with it.

God damn I thought it was going to be a suicide blog at first! Don't worry me so much with a blog title! Ookay I've been drinking a lot.
Don't even worry about where your MMR places you man. Don't even think about that crap. Just concentrate on Probe1s two essentials of ladder starcraft: Have fun Win
In that order. Never care about anything else. Kill all the lings zealots and marines you can and let blizzard sort them out.

OK, I think I need to clarify. My blog title is a quote from an Enya song called Anywhere Is, referring to a journey. Apparently I need to name things better lol! Also, I am not afraid of laddering. I enjoy playing and I want to play and get better. What I said was I was afraid of playing against platinum people who would destroy me. But I'm super excited right now because I just won two games in a row, so I'm actually where I should be! :D

I can't believe I am the first person to tell you this... your 2v2 mmr doesn't effect your 1v1 standing at all.... you got into plat because that is where you should be. Congrats on starting off in such a good spot. Don't be scared of it and just keep up what you are doing!

Dude don't worry about rank. Don't worry about what people say. Just do what you want to do(as long as it is legal lol). Don't let people scare you or push you around. Imagine that you are Inspector Gadget and can do anything! Even beat bad guys with tooth paste! XD.

what's the big deal anyways, you're trying to learn the game. Sure playing MC everygame might make it a little frustrating because you'd get raped so hard all the time, but boy would you learn fast getting to see ALL your holes in your game play all the time. I prefer playing against the best people possible when trying to improve

Maybe, just maybe, you aren't that bad? Take it easy, doesn't matter if you get rolled because you will either drop down to where you "belong" or get good enough to keep up.
Also, read the forums,.watch the GSL, watch Day[9], and you will be up there in no time.
Don't overestimate the competition.

I'm completely sober and thought the same thing. T_T
