Hey Gang,

This is my first blog post ever, I've only been playing Starcraft 2 seriously for about 3 weeks now. This is my first Starcraft game and pretty much my first serious RTS game. I decided to buy the game on release out of interest in the game previews I was seeing and my love for military and science fiction.

I played through the single player campaign getting stuck on the final mission and decided to try my first online match. After thoroughly getting brutally beaten in my first placement match in under 5 minutes I quit and uninstalled.
Give or take 3 weeks ago I caught the Starcraft bug and started watching anything related I could get my hands on, I have to give most credit to Day9 though, his dailies eased me into giving it another try as well as giving me hope that this might be a community I might be able to call home.

I'm now trying to break my way into the community and find my stride, I'm currently not doing all that great though, I have yet to find anyone to consistently play with and my skill seems to stagnate.
Granted I haven't played many matches (maybe 50 now?) I seem to get steamrolled no matter what I do, I've watched all Day9's Newbie Tuesdays as well as any tutorial videos I can find on youtube and try to implement the concepts taught but with no luck.

At any rate this is not a whine and cry blog , hopefully I'll find some friends here and get to have a great time!

Later guys!

Hope you have fun! It is a great game. It just takes time to get the good feel of it. Watch your replays, take notes, practice practice practice. Also, find a player that you like and download their replays, try to learn some of their build and whatnot. Keep trying and always have fun!

My best advice is to only focus on getting a good economy and spending all of the money you have and never stop making workers. I'm sure you know all of this if you've been watching Newbie Tuesday's, but it cannot be emphasized enough. If you keep on playing and focusing on these things, you will improve.

But above all, have fun

Thanks for the kind words guys, I'll go find some replays, I always seem to stall on knowing how much and what to build, such as army units, also once I expand to another base I lose focus.

The most important thing for lower levels is motivation. You have to WANT to get better. You need to practice alot. Try not to get frustrated and rage quit, having a good mind set is key to laddering for hours.

If you stick with Day[9] and watch his older episodes as well then it will help you improve immensely. It takes time and practice, but if you enjoy the game this much you will make yourself proud

Just play, play and more play. Play for the enjoyment of the game. Don't play to get better, otherwise it just seems like a chore. If you play because you enjoy the game, eventually you will get really good!

Don't be discouraged, it's really hard to get into Starcraft for the first time. On the other hand, being new to Starcraft is also awesome - you can take these giant leaps of improvement in reasonably short time, and it will feel very satisfying. Enjoy it while you can

If you haven't done so already, look for the "mental checklist" (use that as the search keywords) Day9 daily - it's probably the #1 entry level daily.and should get you out of the insane low level losing streaks really fast (probably after a dozen games of practice).

TL is also a very nice resource once you crack the basics. Just avoid balance whiners, you don't want to fall into that particular rabbit hole. xD

I also just started playing. I have quite a bit of experience from playing wc3, but literally just started playing sc2 like yesterday. I think we would make good practice partners

Practice man. That's the best advice. Since you're liking Day[9] so much, I would recommend Daily: #269 I think, it's on "Getting into SC2". It's very good, and it outlines a nice little training schedule. The only way you're going to get better, just like at everything else, is to train, and practice. So Good Luck, friend. And Have Fun!

Hey, just wanted to say don't get too discouraged. I lost my first 40 matches IN A ROW. All of them. That was at the start of beta, in March of last year. I'm now platinum, which may not be so hot by TL standards but it's a big step up from where I was.

The quest for improvement is unending, but once you start winning some games you'll feel a lot more secure in it, and I promise that with what you're doing, that isn't far off.

You have to force yourself to play little by little. I've had the game for a year and I'm still terrified of ladder, although there were times in the past that I played it a lot. Now I just do 3s, 4s, or ladder with friends in teams.

You have to realize that with time and practice you will improve. I still have my first win ever on replay, and it's absolutely hilarious how bad I was. I won by sheer luck of the fact that my opponent was somehow even worse than I was. There are always people worse than you out there.

You just have to learn to take each game as no big deal and move onto the next one. I can do that easily with team games but for 2v2 or 1v1 for some reason I still can't bring myself to do it. I think it has a lot to do with pissing off one person who relies on you (2s), or making a mockery of yourself in front of someone else (1s). The thing is though, it's not a very big deal when you think about it. Just do it, and progress will follow.

Oh, and if you want to kill time without uninstalling the game, go back and play the campaign more! I love the campaign missions in and of themselves. They have a lot of neat mechanics and can be a lot of fun, and trying for all the achievements is a great way to re-explore the campaign.

For example, I beat all the missions without upgrades and saved at every point, so before each and every mission I had a massive stockpile of cash and tech available - all I had to do was research it. So, whenever I wanted a particular achievement I would get all the upgrades necessary to make that mission swing wildly in my favor. You also discover easier ways of beating certain missions too, such as different means of aggression that make seemingly difficult challenges (usually "don't allow X things to happen" objectives) seem downright easy once you do them right.
Life is not about making due with what you have; it's about finding out just how much you can achieve. Never settle for anything less than the best. - - - Read my blog!

Play against the AI to start with Go up and up to about hard imo. Then go check on custom games for Green tea AI and practice there, then try again on ladder. It should help you a decent bit.

Thanks guys!

My character is Anderix and the code is 930 I think so I'd love to play with whoever wants!

I currently only get a few hours a night but I try to get at least 2 or 3 games in a night and more during the weekends. My favorite race to play is Zerg...although I have heard all over that it is pure torture to try and start with them, I have tried Terran and Protoss and it just doesn't feel "right to me".

You all sure are right about getting frustrated, I find myself getting pretty upset with myself and asking what I'm doing; and then I think about how much I enjoy watching videos, dailies, reading different team pages as well as imagining getting to play in some small tournaments some day and then I feel even more frustrated that I'm enjoying the community but at the same time not feeling like I'm in it yet since I lose all the time. Haha stupid logic!

I most defiantly want to get better, and I do practice..but I think my practicing is so inefficient and most likely stale, I try to do a few ladder games and a few matches against AI (normal atm). It would most defiantly be great to find some friends to game with and practice with.. last week I found a guy in the looking for group chat channel who said he would help me practice...well he proceeded to blow up everything I had, let me build a few things then blow it up and left..sigh haha.

Thanks again for all the posts already! It is defiantly welcoming to get so many responses and so much advice.

Woo! Just won a match that I actually felt like was deserved! Ling/Roach/Muta, first attack failed to break through the wall so I thought it was over but I stuck with it and did a two prong attack which paid off!
