For the time being, I'd like to get Episode 1 finished. As the subject of most of my blogs in recent times, completing it will be monumental.
Two Undead ships, the Hatred and the Hoarfrost, have been waiting months to get their last touches needed to work ingame...
After months of building, rebuilding, and revising, the audio work for Part 1 of the video is almost entirely finished and now awaits recordings, both of CGI and of the ingame elements, to come together. A gentleman posted on TL a while ago offering his voice services, which I have taken advantage of to compliment my own work in part 1 of the video. This particular aspect of the compositing has been the most scrutinized of the video thus far, as he took multiple recordings and I spent a great deal of time tweaking everything to my standard of quality I am aiming for with this video. Yet one major recording remains for part 1 of Episode 1 - the Prince of Blood's. I am not sure if I am up to the task of voice acting so difficult a character, but you can believe that I will try many times before I give up.
Beyond models and sound effects, I have put some more rounds down range for getting the colossal number of particle effects started on.
The above is some of the prototypes I have built using the game's exceptionally limited particle editor. They are primary death explosions for medium-sized ships, to tail chained explosions of smaller scale at the end of death sequences. They will be tweaked further yet, so take in mind they are very early in.
Of course, with progress, there has been numerous facepalm moments as I undercover more and more ridiculous hardcoded bullshit in this game. I am repeatedly amazed at how bad indie developers can be, and Sins of a Solar Empire is a game whose engine I would consider the most limited of any I have ever dealt with. I would even go as far to say that Brood War was more enjoyable to mod than this game and offered more flexibility over how units work, and Brood War isn't exactly a flexible game. I have entertained the prospect of going straight into the UDK and trying to do my cinematics in there, but figured the time-reward benefit of that wouldn't be very high given I have already invested thousands of man hours into this version. When Episode 1 is done, though, I am jumping ship and going into my UDK plans. Whether or not there'll be an Episode 2 remains undecided, but highly unlikely.
And last, but not least, I have another Warlord ship nearly game-ready status.
That is all for now. As I get closer and closer to completion I will probably speak less and less of the project, until I am finally ready to present the result of two years of blood, sweat, and much rage.
