So, here I am, with about 2 weeks left until the beginning of school again...
...and I am BORED OUT OF MY MIND.
No idea why, just insanely bored. There's nothing to do because all of my friends live sort of far away and are occupied with stuff to which I have little idea because they don't pick up their cells and are not on social networking--the works. Tennis is the main sport I enjoy, but it's very boring to practice alone (it's not like I'm any good anyway), and the season is finally starting back up after the ~1 month hiatus.
Wasting my life on the web has gotten sort of boring because there's not much to do...I can't watch esports 24/7, I dabbled slightly in TF2 (pretty garbage lolol), and it has generally been really boring after the summer program (which was absolutely amazing).
Unfortunately, there is a significant amount of summer homework waiting for me as a high school junior......yet I am sooooo bored I can't find it in me to do it. haha
Also trying to skip calc AB and go straight to BC. Even the super-smart kids at my school have trouble with AB for some reason, while almost everybody who is halfway decent at math skips AB elsewhere Not sure why. Most kids at my school take AB before BC, and the teacher teaches both, BC is taught assuming that AB is already taken.........
I'm feeling very insecure because so many kids have a hard time with AB at my school. Also, a few kids are skipping AB as well this year (which is very rare as I mentioned), and they took this year's calc AB test after having studied for it a bit....unlike me. :| I'm also not very good at math in general in the sense that I can't make AIME and don't study competitive math (so obviously I'm not going to get anywhere)...ugh. On top of it all, I got a fucking 790 on SAT II math quick pretty much guarantees that I'm retarded, but I don't want to retake it.
Also feeling insecure about the PSAT because I took the SAT as sophomore (oct) and haven't even looked at anything to do with the SAT for essentially a year. I did well on the SAT I, so it feels like there are prior expectations in place....BUT PSAT scores tend to be lower, and again I haven't even looked at anything to do with SAT, so I feel sort of scared...will have to go study a bit or something.
While I'm still talking about academic topics: I feel sad that two other kids from my piano teacher (who doesn't even have that many rising senior students) got into freaking RSI, and a third guy whose name/face I recognize from piano competitions also got into RSI. All three of them go to the same school. I'll give you three tries. + Show Spoiler + Sort of makes me feel like a noob. I sometimes wish I were a genius. A socially functional, chill dude, but a genius. Just wish I were really, really smart. EQ+IQ.
Hmm, what else is there...OH ROGER FEDERER FOR THE WIN AT MONTREAL! WHOOOO!!!
Oh, and I really, REALLY want a new laptop (I'm on a 6-year-old dell inpison 1720 laptop--my only comp ofc--with core 2 duo 1.67 gHz, 2 GB RAM, all that crappiness)....preferably one I can take to college. I found this sexy beast, but parents absolutely refuse to get me a new laptop....also I'm used to 17" and will only settle for desktop replacement beasts, so I'm not going to find a comp for much cheaper
I don't have Microsoft Office on it anymore because 2007 just died on me for some reason, so I'm stuck with OpenOffice and Google Docs...so there's another small reason to get a new laptop lol. Might as well get a new laptop with office 2010... It would also be cool to get Win7 instead of Vista.
And that's about it...this is a veritable fence of text. Whoo.
tl;dr 1) bored out of my mind and unable to find a way to amuse myself without completely wasting my time 2) a lot of summer homework but see 1) 3) insecurities about calculus/PSAT/academics in general 4) go Roger Federer~ 5) wish I were a genius (but socially-functional + chill genius)
Also it sucks that when I write blogs/narratives, I use first-person pronouns...a lot. I feel narcissistic and quite self-conscious seeing all of these I/me/myself repetitions...lol. Too lazy to change them, though, and it's just how I (urk) write blogs.
Dang, mostly negative stuff again :[
I noticed a while ago that my blog was given the "miserable" tag/title for the URL, and it seems to be holding true to this day.

Now now, don't call tf2 garbage It's heaps fun with friends
|
Wait...
There's a Tennis thing here in Montreal? When is this? Can I buy tickets?

Ah, I meant I'm garbage at TF2~ TF2 is a fun game.
I will refrain from amending the post because my eyes are already strained, I have a raging headache, and I don't want to compromise the integrity of my entry hehe.

DUDE THIS IS THE ROGERS CUP!!
http://www.rogerscup.com/men/english/home.php
If you could somehow go and watch, that would be amazing!!! :O :O
+ Show Spoiler +but only if old man Roger wins
I actually thought about telling you about since it's in Montreal, but figured that a PM would be too awkward and that bumping a random blog of yours would be awkward as well, so I just didn't do anything. ^^;
|
|
i suggest just finish up your homework, then at least you can be bored but without worries. don't worry soon you'll grow up and wish you had the time like you do now... lol trust me
|
@Torte de Lini: Yesyesyesyesyes!
Do you follow tennis, by any chance? I wonder because it seems sort of random that you would suddenly want to go watch it (even though it is one of the semi-majors of the tour :3), but if you do follow tennis then you would know about it...!
https://tickets.rogerscup.com/Montreal/index_en.html
I'm not sure about the whole ticket-buying process, though, because I've never attended a pro game myself, sad to say. The tournaments are all located too far away.
@Malgrif: yeah, but I'm so boooored~~ /whine
Some of it is ridiculous though.
Taking AP Physics B (C isn't even offered at my school), and we have to: read 2 books (both of our choosing, and one just has to have to do with science); go out for a minimum 1 hour hike; spend a day without using any electronic device; learn the names of 6 plants and 6 birds in the neighborhood; and fill out observational logs for 3 plants and 3 animals (complete with sketches and illustrations of animal tracks etc.). Remember, this is physics.
I can imagine what you're talking about, though...*sigh* I wish I had productive things to do, now that I do have the time, but I'm just so bored that I don't want to do anything.... ;;
|
Nope, I don't follow Tennis at all. I also don't follow the Formula1, but I go to it at every chance possible. :3
|
All I can say is, I have a learning problem when it comes to math, and I brute forced my way through studying for the BC test with a few friends (no calc offered at my crap high school), and I passed with a 3. SO if I can do it, you can do it! :D
Over the summer in prep, I'd just learn what a limit is really really well...

After completing one or two, i usually (~85% of the time) feel immersed in thought (trying to complete a logic puzzle in a timely fashion makes my brain hurt lols). That should get you motivated to do math...

By the comment you made about formula1 do you mean you go to the race tracks live to catch the races, or do you just watch it on the TV?

Dude, I know the feeling. I get no work at all for the summer (my university course is mega doss) and I am injured, so I can't climb as much as I would like, so I have taken up slacklining to pass the time, and it is AWESOME! just find some random crazy shit to pass the time, just be crazy and adventurous!

Honestly it sounds like an MMO would be just the thing for you =P Its a massive timesuck and is a cheap way to socially network if you live in a remote location.
Any other hobbies you're interested in? Lately I've been learning voice accents. I've got 6 of them nailed down so far, with another 10-15 to go. I'm also writing my own D&D campaign setting, acting in community theatre shows, and do a lot of reading.

I don't understand why you are comparing competitive math like AIME, USAMO ect with AP Calc and SAT II Math II. They are on totally different levels. From your worries, can I assume that the academics (*or just math) at your school are very demanding? If not, Calc AB can be self-taught to a proficient level at least for the AP exam. BC is just a single semester of new material. I spent my first semester of Calc BC learning about random "advanced topics".
The difference between 790 and 800 is negligible. Stop being a perfectionist >.>
The PSAT is "easier" in the sense that due to the shortened time frame, you can stay at an optimal mental state for the test's duration. The SAT is more fatiguing and you might just get bored after so many freaking sections. If you're really worried, just study an hour or two the SAT every day or two. I think there were some guides on collegeconfidential by some guy who got 2400 three times.

why don't you make some e-friends e-friends are always fun and if your e-friends get boring just find some new ones also ap calc ab is easy, i never took it but i got a 5 on the bc exam after taking a calc class (not bc calc) just use your head and it'll work out for you... i don't know if just the class at your school is hard or wtf is up just retake the sat math II if it bothers you that much, i would have retaken it if i got a 790 because kids here make fun of the kids who don't get an 800 i also want a new monitor and an ipod but my mommy won't get me either because i stay up and play games too much, lol i probably sound like a huge loser and i am, but i'd rather stay in and play games with my e-friends than go out with my rl friends because going out requires moving and stuff anyways that's my advice, make some e-friends, probably shit advice but hey

Over the summer in prep, I'd just learn what a limit is really really well... All righty! I really want a 5, though ._. rawr. I know what a limit is from precalc (I think I know it really well, I guess :x). I did okay in honors (roll eyes) precalc with a 96%. At another school nearby, getting 95% allows one the option of skipping AB, but at my school, I have a friend who had a final grade of 110% (albeit not honors) in precalc and was struggling in the AB class...

Offtopic: are you a regular in the ADT? Ah, I wasn't trying to compare them, sorry. They were just juxtaposed because I thought I might as well lump all of the academics in one section. Obviously they're nothing alike. I'm just depressed about both, lol. Anyone halfway decent at math should be able to skip AB, get 800 SAT 2 Math II, and make AIME. I have not accomplished the last two and am worried about the first. I did sort of lump them together but did not mean to compare them--sorry sorry!
I have heard that the two are functionally the same, but it's definitely very bad compared to almost everyone....I know people who scored pretty badly on all tests but still managed 800 in SAT Math II.
Yeah, I'll definitely study for the PSAT. I got a 2400 on the SAT I so I'm worried about how worse in comparison my PSAT will look. I didn't study too much for SAT, but I was definitely in the mindset to take it, so I'll definitely have to prepare for the PSAT again. It just feels burdening when added to all of the other stuff that must be done and weighs on my mind. ._.
I'm a regular in the ADT in the sense that I visit it very regularly, but not in the sense of being accepted, because I don't really participate in their IRC, nor do I watch/read as much as they do in general. I just like to hop in and chat. I know enough to understand all of their discussions, but not necessarily enough to actually participate. 2400 on your SAT? who gives a fuck what your PSAT scores are?
|
Apparently summer programs put more weight on PSAT now, so I have to worry about it even though I took the SAT in advance (since one doesn't get scholarships etc. if he/she takes it as a sophomore). Also, it looks even worse now if I do poorly on my PSAT...
|
I wouldn't worry about it man, i didn't get a 2400 on my SAT's but i got a 2320 and i went in baked, PSAT's were harder though haha you're right.... Seems a bit off that you couldn't report your actual SAT results to a summer program instead of your PSAT scores =/.
AB Calc was definitely harder at my school than BC, although that might have been the teacher. Honestly i wouldn't worry about it you're clearly pretty smart so testing up won't be to difficult, it's your decision in the end don't let teachers hold you back. What year are you going into?
|
Er, I just meant that summer programs also put significant weight in PSATs. Obviously SATs are going to be "worth" more :x
I got into BC without having to test in, so I'm sort of worried. As I mentioned in the massive OP, most of the other kids who wanted to skip AB either self-studied AB and took the calc AB test this year. Also, it should have been sort of clear that I'm going to be a junior, sorry.

No need to apologize lol, or be depressed. Rather, I think you are setting your expectations too high. No one will look down upon you for getting a 790 as opposed to getting an 800. I was personally never interested in the detailed mathematics of the AMC/company and only took AMC 8 but I suppose if you really care just spend some more time.
I definitely underestimated you :o Give yourself a pat on the back and don't worry about the PSAT. The main difference is that due to a shorter test and thus less questions, each question you miss will drag your score down much more compared to the SAT. Seeing as you got a 2400 I'm sure getting at least a 230 will be a walk in the park. Just re-study any techniques as the subject matter you probably already know well enough.
K-korewa nan desu ka? I just lurk in the ADT seeing as I too don't watch as frequently as the regulars.

Scratching my head here. I have a 3.87 in math classes at a top 30 US university (although that might be terrible by your standards) including A's in complex and real analysis but I didn't do the first or third thing, and got a 740 on my SAT II math. In fact, I'd have to google AIME, not sure what it is at all.

For what it's worth, Calc AB is worthless, since it's essentially the first semester of Calc BC. At my high school, standard procedure was to skip to Calc BC by our sophomore/junior year so we could take Calc 3 our junior/senior year.

[Can I assume you're aiming for HYPS?] Actually, I think everyone will look down on me for getting a 790 lol. It's practically supposed to be a given... I just really, really do not want to go through the pressure of taking it and this time hoping for a 800 because if I do get <800 it will be even worse, so there you go :c
I'm still scared about the PSAT in any event ;; I just want to get national merit stuff, and not be seen as nooby. I literally have not even looked at anything to do with the SAT (just wanted to reiterate that for the n-th time)....so yeah I will study. It's just another thing weighing on my mind.
Yeah, I just like to participate in ADT since they're pretty funny + fun hehe. I actually don't want any anime at all besides Steins;Gate at the moment, but I know what they're talking about :p
Thanks for the advice and for being nice! ^^ My dream school has always been MIT: electrical engineering. Unfortunately I'm not good at math as I mentioned...so yeah...ugh. Since high schoolers don't exactly have electrical engineering classes (my robotics team isn't very good either), EE kids are just expected to have monstrous academics, which--as I mentioned--I'm lacking in.

It's about doing the best in your situation and all that: if I'm have the chance to take it, I should be doing it--and doing it well.
It's part of a national math competition series: first you have AMC, then AIME, then USAMO if your combined AMC+AIME scores are good enough, and if you score very well on the USAMO, you go to a summer math camp or something, and after that you get on the national math team for the United States and go to IMO, the worldwide competition. Obviously I'm not a genius nor do I study that much math, so there is no way I'm making it that far, but AIME shouldn't be too much to ask for in regard to a MIT hopeful. In fact, it really doesn't mean anything unless I get to the USAMO or something.
I'm sorry also for coming across as the kind of guy who would judge you for that...top 30 university is good of course ;; I do have very high standards for myself, though, so that might explain it. I'm a perfectionist~
I dunno, it really just feels like a letdown. I'm not even being falsely modest or anything (those people are really annoying actually). It's just that these results are very crappy in the grand scheme of things.

I'm also scared that because the teacher teaches both, and because most kids do not skip AB, she treats BC as a class "requiring" prior understanding of AB. I just don't get it I have lots of friends who just skipped AB as if it were the normal thing to do (and from what I can tell, it is) and got 5s on the test, rolled through the class ezmode without being math geniuses or anything like that, but for some reason some of the smartest kids at my school have trouble with AB. I would say that some of them are more intelligent than the kids who skipped AB, too.

Don't worry, I'm making similarly high standards for myself for grad school and it's REALLY frustrating when it looks like plans might not go through. I guess Putnam would be the grad school equivalent of AIME?

This is absolutely retarded. In college, if you've never taken calculus before, the track is Calculus I > Calculus II > Calculus III, all of which are one semester long.
Calc AB is Calc I, but spread out over a year. Calc BC is Calc I and Calc II, but since it's spread out over a year, it goes at roughly the pace of college classes: basically, you take Calc I your first semester (aka Calc AB), and Calc II your second semester. Most schools have Calc III as a year long class (at least mine did), which is nice, because you get to go at a relaxed pace and do fun things like projects and going out to lunch instead of covering material <_<.
If you first take Calc AB and THEN Calc BC, you're going to find the first semester of BC incredibly boring.

It's a whole system. Basically, AIME requires that one scores 120 on the AMC 10 (all grades up to 10 may take it), or 100 on the AMC 12 (grades up to 12). Max score for AMC 10/12 is 150, and there are 25 questions each worth 6. Leaving one blank is 1.5 points and getting it wrong is 0 points. There's also some percentage system for AMC to make AIME. After getting into AIME, one takes that test two, which is 3 hours long and has 15 questions. Then, the combined score for AMC+AIME is created with a formula that varies a bit each year to determine the invitees for USAMO. I would say either AIME or USAMO is the equivalent of Putnam.
There are no teams or anything like that, though. Also, the final purpose of the test is really to determine the eligible individuals for the US international mathematics team.

I'm not sure what to think about the matter, but I know that I am going to take BC. I'm just afraid that the teacher be reviewing very little Calc I material.

I am almost 100% sure I'm from the neighboring school that you're talking about, so... Despite the fact that the teacher teaches BC as if you already knew AB, the fact of the matter is AB is a joke. Anyone close to AIME level in math should be able to get through BC and get a 5, no problem on the test. Pretty much everybody at our school gets a 5 on the AP test for BC, as long as they put in a little work. Just do the homework and make sure not to sleep too much in class, and I'm sure you'll be fine. I was fairly successful in AIME, so I guess the only advice I can give you is that you're not going to get better at math unless you practice. I qualified for AIME in 8th grade, but didn't manage to do so in 9th grade because I got cocky and slacked off on doing math for the entire year. If you go to the school I think you go to, there are a few capable people there; try to meet up with them on a regular basis and do problems. If not, artofproblemsolving.com is a great resource; $150 for 12 1.5 hour classes. Additionally, they provide hw problems for the classes (assuming you sign up) that are quite challenging either way. Finally, you're clearly really smart, so don't stress everything and worry about grades and scores. Enjoy life.
Oh, and MIT: Because not everyone can get into CalTech

Pft. MIT forever. Anyway advice taken, thanks.
I want to do Physics Olympiad...

dude...just watch S;G up and down :o to say it with the words of lord stark: Wint...I mean Tuesday is coming.
Kidding aside, good luck with your school stuff, don't have any advice because of the completely different system here. Sadly work keeps me from being bored ever :/

...but I don't want to rewatch anything :c Steins;Gate is really amazing though. So good. :3
I have no experience with subbing at all unfortunately ;;
I suppose I will just try to finish all of my summer hw ASAP so that I can do what I want for the time being and relax a little.

Yeah? Well I have 6 weeks left of summer to rot away (yay quarter system). I pretty much agree with most of the people (didn't read all the replies) about calc AB vs BC. Unless you're actually not that good at math, you shouldn't waste your time with AB. But a 790 on math SAT in reality means you made a total of 1 stupid mistake. Big deal. Yeah people will joke about you failing to get an 800, but anyone who's actually smart knows how little that 10 points means. Also, AIME is a very different kind of math skill than calc requires. It's more like reasoning and advanced logic compared to complex number crunching. I basically 5'ed the BC test in my sleep but never managed to qualify for AIME...0.5 points away the last time
And don't compare yourself to people you know who've succeeded. First of all, it's Harker dam it lol. what did you expect? yes I'm bay area too. and of course you hear about the people who succeed and not about the people who don't. To me it sounds like you're pretty smart. not super genius, but smart enough to do well in life. just do your best and don't worry about the geniuses or they just make you feel bad. Unless they're as cute as Makise Kurisu. Then try to marry her. Remember she's a tsundere so she'll just be playing hard to get
