When I first visited the college I am currently attending, I met a guy.
I browsing around the dorms, skipping one of the more boring meetings of "pre-frosh weekend", when I saw an open room door. I poked my head inside and saw two guys working on a laptop together. I wanted to start a conversation, but I couldn't find the courage to muster any words, I just watched quietly from outside of the room. After a few seconds, I noticed someone had taped pictures of Mudkips all over the walls of the room, and I saw my chance.
"I luurrvvee mudkips!" I declared, stepping into the center of the doorway.
The two men paused and turned to look at me, suddenly seeming much older and intimidating than I had original thought. I panicked and blushed, shuffling a few steps backwards and starting to mutter an apology for disturbing them.
Suddenly, one of the guys let out the brightest smile I'd ever seen and stood up, welcoming me. I talked to both of them and introduced myself, feeling relieved. The guy who had given me that amazing smile was sweet, hilarious and just an absolutely amazing person. Meeting and spending time with him really convinced me that was the college I wanted to go to, despite the fact he was graduating that year and would not be there when I attended.
We exchanged numbers and I found myself downloading skype as soon as I got home to keep up communication. He was great to talk to, geeky, intelligent, kind and had a sense of humor that no one else could match. I found myself with the biggest crush on him and every time we talked it only grew. After talking for a while, I found out that he was a Starcraft player. While I had played many video games, I had always avoided RTSs, just figuring they weren't my type. He talked so passionately about the game, I decided I wanted to share that passion with him.
Knowing he was a really skilled player, I was reluctant to discuss the game much with him. I worked at Game Stop at the time, so I read through the Starcraft user manual when I found myself with a few seconds to spare at work. I tried to memorize stats and come up with counters to each unit while reading, but I felt oddly overwhelmed. With some searching, I found a few videos of old matches he had played and cheered him on while watching, even though the games were years old. Watching his games taught me more than anything else had, but I still had some sort of fear that if I started trying to play Starcraft that I would realize he was on a whole different level of human intelligence and skill, that I would just shame myself. No matter how often I told myself those fears were silly, I still managed to avoid playing Starcraft.
When I finally got to college, I was overwhelmed by all of the new people and finally living on my own. He visited the college during the first weekend after freshman orientation, as many alumni do, to see his underclassmen friends and greet me. When I saw him, I completely panicked. I was never good at expressing my more complicated feelings and I wasn't able to express how I felt. In fact, I managed to completely turn him away.
After he left, I felt completely lost and confused. I rewatched a few of his matches, then tried my best to ignore the game and thoughts of him. Perhaps I really wasn't on his level of play.
A few months later, I found myself going to Blizzcon. I saw him there and he was as kind, happy and courteous as ever, but he was busy with the Starcraft tournaments. I talked to him for a few minutes the first day, just enough to make me start kicking myself again, and then we parted ways.
It took me a long time to decide what to do with the Starcraft 2 beta key I had received in my Blizzcon goodie bag. Eventually, I gave it to one of my good friends and forced them to promise me the first friend invite they received. Unfortunately, the promise was broken and I was left raging about how I could have just sold the card or given it to someone who would uphold such promises. The next friend invite was mine, though.
I nervously downloaded the client and logged in for the first time. I had already decided that I was going to try to perfect Zerg, as I felt that the race would best suit my desired play style. I played game after game, messing up my micro and macro, taking years to select units and forgetting requirements for upgrades.
After a lot of practice, I started getting the hang of it. I even won a few games and found myself able to rank decently. However, that didn't restrain the harsh words of my opponents. I was told numerous times that I was "a waste of a beta key," along with other insults and complaints. I felt oddly alienated from the community, unlike I had with other games. Still, I pressed forward and practiced in my spare time.
When the time came around, I ordered the SC2 CE, eager for the art and other goodies. A number of members of my WoW guild also began playing and I was happy to join them. I honed my skills and started practicing with one of my guild members for our guild tournament. He was my personal coach and gave me a lot of insight and game basics that I would have taken much longer to gain otherwise.
The guild tournament finally came around. I was excited and nervous. I found out who my first opponent was and started studying his strategy. It was a terran player who enjoyed blocking themselves in their base and rushed straight to battlecruisers. He used the same strategy in every game I saw him play.
I played terribly. Actually, I played fairly well, but I was still so timid with the game, I didn't realize I had multiple times where I could have just crushed him if I moved all of my forces in. A strategic nydus worm in the back of his base should have assured my victory, but his command center escaped with 20 hp. Yes, no exaggeration, 20. Of course, I realized after he had flown away that I had messed up and forgot to unload my last 5 units. After over a full hour of gameplay, I lost due to diminished resources and his battlecruisers.
I cried. Literally. I just broke down and cried. The amount of frustration built up in that hour washed over me at once. I knew I had played poorly, I knew that the victory should have been mine so many times, and yet I had lost.
The second game he tried a different strategy, and I beat him in under 15 minutes.
The third game was yet another grueling, painful game, lasting over 45 minutes. I lost in the end and felt completely exhausted. I was upset and utterly ashamed of myself. My hands had been shaking during the full 2+ hours of gameplay and I couldn't believe I preformed so poorly. I just laid back in my bed and cried. I thought of the guy who had started my interest in Starcraft and felt even worse. If he had seen how I preformed, how would he feel?
I played occasionally with friends in custom games, but began avoiding Starcraft as much as possible. Then, one day, he randomly sent me a soundclip. It was a story that was really touching and encouraged me to shrug off my bad feelings and start playing again.
Even to this day, I often find myself mesmerized when I listen to him. When he casts, I smile and laugh along with everyone else watching, but find myself feeling a little crushed inside, too. Some part of me just wants to reach through my laptop and grab his attention once again. Instead, I listen quietly and cheer him on from here.
So, yes, I play Starcraft. I'm not great at it. In fact, I'm not even good at it, but I still love my little zerglings and I try to be the best queen I can.

Haha, the SC2 community always welcomes female players! Thanks for posting this.
Edit: You mentioned the man is a caster who makes others laugh. Who is this person, if you wouldn't mind disclosing it to us? I'm interested in watching him.
|
You said you exchanged numbers with this guy. Do you still keep in touch with him? Pretty good read nonetheless; it will sure increase your blog rating so you won't be the last one anymore.
|
Is this guy you're talking about a famous caster? I enjoyed reading it!
Edit: So if it is day she went to college with him? nicccee

I know who Riku has a crush on, lalalalaa
Seriously, though, touching story. I know how you felt trying to play during beta -- I was called "trash" during one of my ten (at the time) placement matches by someone who walked into my base while I was looking something up in the tech tree window. I lost my first 40 (forty) games. In a row.
Somehow, I managed to keep at it, and I'm doing somewhat better now.

Is this guy Day[9]? lmao
In all seriousness: Just relax a bit and try to enjoy the game. If you're not having fun anymore and find playing the game exhausting, then take a break. Go outside, play some ping-pong, chill with some friends, etc. There are definitely activities that are more therapeutic than StarCraft out there =P

I believe it is Day[9]: + Show Spoiler +On June 20 2011 03:25 Riku wrote:Being a geek, I have some nerdy crushes. Admittedly, they are mostly just harmless little things that give me that slight hint of fangirlness that I greatly fear and generally hide from, but... eh, I figured I'll write them out so one day one of them might google themselves and find they have a fan. (If this blog does not seem interesting to you, please just close the tab now, I realize this isn't the best topic I have ever blogged on, but it's my blog. Anyway, inb4 trolls.) CleverAdivsor Not only does he play a mean Malphite, but he has an awesome voice and a very distinctive laugh. Some might wonder why I like Clever, but, despite my Nidalee love, HotShotGG isn't on this list. Truthfully, it's all about attitude. Clever is not only funny and great to listen to, but he is really a nice guy! He never talks shit about the enemy or blames anyone on the team. He celebrates when he wins and just gets a little silent when he loses, but never gives up! Now, if he only played Nidalee... Day[9] What Starcraft loving female doesn't love Day[9]. While Clever is a really nice guy, I think Day[9] puts a new meaning to being kind. He is the sweetest guy out there, which I bet is hard considering his sense of humor! He is all about being good to everyone and always doing the right thing. Plus, he is absolutely hilarious! He can brighten my mood anytime and always brings a smile to my face. And let's not forget that he's also tall (yay!) and quite well built! Though QXC probably has the best ass of any Starcraft player out there (I am being 100% serious, that guy has buns of steel). Admittedly, my nerd crush on Day[9] goes back to about three years ago. I watched SC games before I even really knew much about it because of him and he's one of the main reasons I put so much time into SC2 beta. Sadly, I gave up on becoming good enough to be recognized by my skills, so maybe my cute baneling cosplay will work? Or terran mech outfit? We'll see! Actually, I guess those are really my two biggest nerd crushes right now. For some reason, I find almost nothing sexier than someone who understands how impressive getting my first Blood Queen 25 kill blackout drunk (and pulling top dps) was, can understand my enthusiasm about Nidalee, applauds my Minecraft castle, and cries with me over the one hour guild tournament game I lost due to being just one baneling short. I must admit, one of the reasons I've been spending so much time at the AFK Tavern recently is that I love fellow geeks. It's probably close to what a guy feels like at the Playboy Mansion... minus the boner. Really sweet story. I still remember the first 1v1 I played in BW, I was toss and against a terran on some weird custom map. The terran SCV rushed me with a few marines, and I gg'd and force quit out of the game, left my room and didn't go back on bnet for a day.
But it gets better and you get better, and it's great that you're pushing through the nerves and improving. I'm sure whoever it is you're crushing on is very proud of you. ^^

Holy crap is this guy Day[9]?? Great blog btw!^^;

She goes to Harvey Mudd...not fooling anyone

A guy blog! This is such a refreshing change from all the girl blogs on TL lately. I'm glad to see such a unique topic being used for a blog; especially when you manage to tie it into Starcraft as well. And better still, you managed to push it out after already doing one earlier. Truly astounding!
Keep up the awesome work - another 5-star vote from me!

So cute! And I'll never ever 2 rax you, because we're on different servers

O.o........O.O
Seriously....??!?!
Random cute girl of awesomeness that happens to start posting on TL possible started her SC passion with Day[9] himself?
OMG this is just nuts. Why is this world so damn tiny?
That's a pretty amazing story Riku, Just remember the game is purely for fun, win or lose, bad or good.
...........Maybe you could reveal this "mystery man" someday to put the rumor mill to sleep?

This story is so heart warming. Sorry that you ending up losing that match. The community can be harsh at times. (I know I am a protoss player) I hope that you continue contributing to the community and coming by :D. Also don't be such a tease? are all the peoples posts above correct? You got a thing for Day[9] no need to hide that. Everyone who has eyes and ears has a thing for Sean
Awesome blog 5/5

Honestly you guys, just look at her post history. Unless Day[9] is secretly a rather attractive and appealingly thin girl, in disguise, all along, you can't quite explain THISSSSSS.
Otherwise that's awesome Riku, made me (: 5/5

Lol oh shit I thought you guys say she meet Day[9] , not that she = Day[9] lol Me dumb

awe I wish I could meet a cute girl in a similar way to your story Riku. unfortunately most girls wouldn't think i play video games like sc/wow, and i have no idea where to find the ones who do too.
cute story it made me smile!

I'm just impressed that you saw a random open door during a prospective student day and went in. That's ballsy. (And I think you may have gotten a bit lucky that it was someone like Day[9] who would be so accepting.)
Anyway, that's an auspicious induction into SC/2 if ever I heard of one. Don't waste it--keep playing!
|
Thanks for all of the support, guys, I must admit it can be a bit scary posting a blog that is so personal!
As for being ballsy, the room doors at my college open out into a courtyard, so I could see into the room just by walking by. I didn't exactly sneak in or anything.
|
Wow, the TL Detective Squad wrapped this up pretty quickly in figuring out who the mystery man was, haha xD.
|
As I was reading this the first person I thought of was Day9. Totally correct! LOL
|
So it is day[9]... we should get him to explain this on his daily ^^
|
Is anyone else thinking how to send day[9] a link to this thread?
|
Harvey Mudd? Claremont so nice yo, C5 represent! (Dad and both older siblings Alums of Pomona)

This is just a surreptitious attempt at getting Day[9] to comment here isn't it? He probably won't though, as he is taken :/

Yep, Mudd! Pomona is really nice, I've taken a few classes there!
Haha, Claremont breeds Starcraft players!

1/5. I saw you complain about blog ratings so I'll tell you why. It was boring. Making thinly veiled references to day9 couldn't save it from being bad (in fact they made it worse, no one likes when some drops names for no reason other than attention). This sounded just like every other noob who wants to tell the world about how they started playing sc2, just search "hello" and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I've never rated your blog before but since I saw you complain I decided to give you justification.

Actually, some concerned/kind people PMed me and noted that my blog rating is so slow due to it's own type of popularity.
Afterall, you did take the time to read it, didn't you? And you even took the time to rate it!
Haters gonna hate, and now I have the official title of "Worst Blogger on TL" or "Most Hated Blogger on TL" or perhaps "TL Blog Dreadlord." Though "Scourgelord" has a better ring to it. Actually, since I am the worst, perhaps I go with "Lich Queen."

Don't consider me a "hater", you are actually pretty amusing though perhaps not the way you intend. I find it very hard to hate people on the Internet (Torte de Lini can testify to my vacillating feelings regarding him). I was merely explaining why I 1 stared it because you previously complained. Honestly you shouldn't worry about blog ratings. Several people have 1 stared all my blogs and while it pissed me off at first I realized it doesn't really matter.

I'll admit it at first i was quite skeptical of you Riku..
"Who was this Riku person filling up the blog section, how dare she!?" i said to myself. "A blog a day? this sure is going to get old quick!", "Nobody can be that interesting!"
But as the days rolled over and the blogs kept coming... and coming.. and coming...
My view slowly started to change, at first i kept coming back for the comments.
I laughed to myself, "Man these 5 pages of comments are freaking hilarious." and thought, "who cares what she actually posts, the community is whats really making these blogs good." (ok this is a slight exaggeration)
As more and more time passed, i realized that although i still looked forwards to reading the comments the actual content was becoming more interesting to me. I found your tales of blizzcon to be pretty entertaining and now to cap it off you came out with this blog. Which made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, (and slightly jealous that you had such an awesome introduction to starcraft, but thats ok i'll forgive you for that one ).
I think.. i'm a convertee.

Bah, haters will be haters and raters will be raters (oh snap!) don't let it bother you Riku.
I do think, however, that every good blog needs a picture, if only one of a kitty totally unrelated to the story. Yeah, blogs nowadays certainly needs more kittens. Definitely.

Haha, well, I hope my blogs will continue to entertain you! I promise you, "Riku's Third Blizzcon" will be the most entertaining by far out of the convention blogs, but I have so much to write for it, that I'm really procrastinating!

One of my cats:

And, yes, it's Day[9]. He is just as awesome irl as he is on his show. Actually, I think he can be even more humorous in person because he doesn't hold back on his jokes at all. I really enjoy talking to him, he always has the absolute best advice and can calm me down and make me happy no matter what is distressing me!
Also, I tend to link him every post/article that I find where people express how happy he makes them and how he's helped them out. They all make him really, really happy. I think his fans don't understand how much their kind words brighten his day! Casting so much can be uber stressful! Since he doesn't get to see his audience, he can't tell how much joy and laughter his giving to people! So don't hold back, tell him how awesome he is!

Don't make threats you cannot keep.
Here's the scenario,
You start going out with someone and meet their family for the first time. Dad, brother, Sally or Sue takes you aside and tells you if you do anything to hurt their daughter/sibling they will do xyz to you. The reality: no they won't. One thing I learned a long time ago is not to make promises you cannot keep. Likewise, this is what I tell anyone who tries to white knight.
That's not to say on the rare occasion they won't (I've heard a few stories, but even then they're just stories). I know quite a few loose cannons who are well-versed in fights. Once again, it's all hearsay or better yet hype.
Word of advice: drop the complex. It gets old and people will just laugh at you.
*
Back to the matter at hand,
Riku I'm going to be very blunt.
Why the heck do you care about being accepted on this board? Before you say you aren't, look at the ice breaker you unwittingly used. I love scenarios and examining human behavior so here's another one:
You go out to the bar with a friend. Your friend introduces you to a few of their friends and you mingle. Your new contact cracks a lame joke you normally wouldn't laugh at; however, you crack a smile and giggle. The reality: you tell yourself it was a stupid joke yet you still laugh because you are looking for their acceptance. Tada!
*
The more I read, the more I'm led to believe you are gamer who craves attention. Once again, it's all meaningless and has little to no merit because I don't actually know you. I'm not the type of person who judges someone based solely off their cover. This leads me to my next question: What intrinsic value do you get out of all this?

Edit: You have to realize I also work 10 hour days where the only thing I can do with my spare time when I am letting my data run is write. Blogs are a slight procrastination to the actual stories I'm supposed to be finishing up.

Hm that's a nice cat picture. I'll be honest, this blog lost my attention, but I'm sure it's fine. I really just opened it as I saw your comment/picture from SirJolt's proposter blog. I like the cat picture though.
Edit: you seem to be getting alot of crap for some reason that I can't be bothered to learn. So despite not reading it, I'll rate this a 5. If nothing else because there's plenty of blog nazi's around already.

I must admit, while I like the subject I wrote on, I think I could have written it much better than I did. Alas, I'm too lazy to rewrite and edit...
Thanks for the 5, though!

I usually read the beginning, skim the rest, and hope the person has made some glaringly unrealistic claim and then I move straight to the comments and wait for the side-show to begin.

Ah, yeah, I understand what you mean about reading personal blogs. I didn't exactly plan on writing a "guy blog," but I wanted to explain why I got into Starcraft and I really couldn't without talking about Sean.

* I was more thinking in terms of how teamliquid was like a land, of which I was an inhabitant and how I didn't want it to have a queen. Wasn't white knighting but I can see how it looks that way.
I was also just going to embarrass people online and troll them.
Yeah so I just didn't want people to be like "oh you go to teamliquid? hardeehar, you buncha nerds, how's that queen you unanimously elected and all fawn over?!"

She didn't drop any names, and hell I wouldn't have guessed that, but then again I don't really care about SC2, either. I liked the read, and I barely read any blogs on here, it was a nice story.
As for ratings, I've never used them, and I don't think I ever will, neither have I even ever checked any rating of my blogs, since.. who gives a damn?

Let me get this straight...
When you get writer's block you come here and post blogs about yourself or gaming. When I get writer's block I like to busy myself with other things that have nothing to do with writing. You on the other hand like to write more. If that's the case how about writing about something else or try bowel movement writing. Branch out.
You could always make posts about your projects as well. It might be more beneficial. You say people rarely give you advice. There's mine.
I think I should have placed more emphasis on acceptance in my spiel. There is a slight difference between attention and acceptance.
*
More cat pictures. Peachy.
P.S. I noticed your comments on Vindictus and no one inviting you to play. Here's the deal. Everyone I know plays on the East Server. You are on the West. I have no idea who actively plays on the West. Even the guys I know based out of Cali and Hawaii play on the East. There's a valid reason why the East won the last event. I've tried resurrecting/updating the Vindictus thread a few times but it would get very few responses. You can try yourself though or roll a character on East and you can come join us.

I can confirm Day9 is not only amazing in general but freakin hilarious in person.
He came near DC one time and hung out with us NoVA/DC nerds (we went bowling LOLL) and was cracking hilarious jokes like the ENTIRE time.
Forever <3 you day9
Crazy small world that you got to meet him in college like that riku... how I envy both of you (you for getting to hang with day9 in college and learn starcraft from him etc, him for doing nothing other than sit in a room playing video games and having a cute girl walk up and introduce herself... so lucky!)

I'm honestly not a very big fan at all of your blogs Riku. But I like the part when you described the guild tournament and how your hands were shaky at the end. It's something I can relate to.

And now for something completely different...
- A Riku thread about Starcraft.
Followed by:- A compliment from Day[9].
I've played a few marathon games myself before. Longest ever was something like an hour and 12 minutes. Chilling with Day[9] would also be pretty cool, although I don't he'll be in Waterloo anytime soon, even though we have the best CSL team. He'd probably avoid it like the Plague since CombatEX goes here...

I wouldn't expect another sc post from me, i'm too embarrassed of my skill to dare to discuss it with team liquid forum members.
:/
I get all crazy stressed out in games where I know my opponent, I get the same panicked feeling that I do when someone is trying to gank me in WoW. Except it lasts just a few seconds to a minute in WoW, while a sc match lsts so long that i'm shaking and weak from tension and fear by the end. Rather embarrassing to admit, but it's the truth.

Sounds like a case of "I take ladder as serious and competitive gaming." I found that the best way to play is to not give a fuck. No one cares about your ladder rank anyway. This isn't LoL or WoW where people will blame you if you wipe the raid or feed the team. And as long as you put an effort to improve with every game (but not caring about winning/losing), you should have a relaxed time gaming while slowly becoming gosu.
Thats my approach to SC2 anyway.

The Starcraft community continuously proving to be the most supportive possible. Less than 2 weeks ago I made this thread, and since then, my nerves have almost gone away
<3 you guys

Actually, I don't get very nervous against random people! It's losing to friends and people I know that makes me get all worked up! I guess i'm just afraid of showing weakness, my friends respect me and my skills in a lot of things, so it pains,me to admit I utterly suck at rts

Just be like "Alright I'll 1v1 u in sc2 but then we 1v1 in LoL/WoW"
Then kick their ass in a solomid 1v1 or a wow duel
Also this won't get better until you get better! Play more and get better at sc2 so you won't have to be so embarrassed and will feel more at home here (since these are first and foremost starcraft forums)

I am in the same boat. I don't care about looking stupid in front of random strangers, but come on, I got a reputation to attend to! =)

Aw, I'm sorry about your lost chances =/ Sometimes I tell myself:" JUST DO IT. ASK THE CUTE GUY OUT. Later on when you're old and wrinkly, you'll laugh it off if it failed." But it doesn't work. Hopefully, something will happen that'll put you on a tilt towards asking him out. Good luck.

Cute story.
When I played brood war in my dorm room random guys would come in and watch me all the time. Girls not so much, though I think it did happen once or twice. Maybe I needed to put up some mudkips.
