Originally I had been looking forward to the Summer, a time to relax and since I have recently turned 16, a time to get a decent job, a car and sort things out. Unfortunately some things just don't go as you planned, I had previously been working at my friend's restaurant, but decided it was time for a real job, and applied at Best Buy, Wal-Mart and a few other places that avoided the food industry I had grown to hate.
So here I am a month and a half later and still have not received any contact from any employer, pressure from my parents and family to "get a job" or "become responsible" has become almost unbearable yet they still do not seem like they are willing to offer any assistance and seem to believe that I don't even want a job and that I would rather sit inside and play games all day and take any opportunity to avoid responsibility, although I have tried to convince them that I actually want a job.
My choices seem to be this: accept the fact that I will only be hired at a crappy food service job and be miserable while making at least some money, try harder to find a decent job or talk to family and friends to see if they can help me find anything, or accept my failure for the Summer and try to make the best out of it by having fun and hanging out with friends.
I guess what I'm asking is this, where should I go to try to find a job at the age of 16, and how do I convince my parents that I actually desire to find a job?
PS: To make the situation worse the cell phone I had been using for all my contact info on my applications was just chewed up by my dog, but hopefully the SIM card is intact and I can get a new phone quite easily, because I needed a new one anyway as the screen was broken. Also I hate making a blog like this because it seems so pretentious and whiny, but I guess it allows me to put some things out there.

nobody enjoys their summer job at age 16, i've been working at the same place every summer since i was in the 9th grade and i hate it here, but money is money, right?
at the end of your blog you even acknowledge sounding whiny, so i think you know what you have to do

Try to make the most of your summer. If you can get a job, get one - it does not matter what you do so long as you stick it out for even a little while it will make you feel good.

I feel the same way man. I turn 17 in august, I've applied to numerous places (even the shitty food service jobs you talked about) but have never gotten a call back.
fortunately, my friend told me that a bunch of people from our local movie rental place (where he works) are going to be leaving this august. it's pretty much the perfect job for me cause it's close, I have a friend there and I'm into movies and games :D
so yeah, I've pretty much put all my hope into that for the time being. have no fucking idea what I'll do if that fails.

Best Buy or Walmart is not that much better than food service jobs. Just take the food service job, earn some dough, and get yourself a sweet ride.
Yea, and don't hold your breath for the jobs you applied to a month a half ago. They probably aren't going to hire you.
Good luck.

At 16 you really shouldn't be holding out for anything, take anything you can get. Money is money, especially if you haven't been contacted, and it'll have the plus side of getting your parents off your back.
Also, unless you're able to support yourself with the money you're making, things like Best Buy and Wal-mart really don't qualify as "real" jobs, although I can understand the comparison you're getting at.

Unfortunately, very few summer jobs are great unless you have some connections :/ Take what you can get imo.

Well, most food service jobs pay minimum wage, at least walmart pays about a $1 over minimum. They also tend to give more hours.

I think that being miserable and working a crappy food job can be pretty important sometimes. Builds character, and hopefully induces you to work hard. I've worked in two crappy food jobs and I'm glad I did them; gave me some added perspective.

Dude, finding jobs is hard right now..... Really hard.....
|
Don't forget you're also 16, most jobs you'll get will be the most boring and useless shit imaginable
Just suck it up and make some phat cash

Try harder to find a job not in the food industry. Canadian tire, warehouses, they hire lots of younger people. Print off 50 resumes and hand them all out to EVERYWHERE you pass. Wear a suit when you go to hand them out.

I have the best job ever. Umpiring 10 year-old baseball games. I get to choose my own schedule and get 10 bucks an hour :D
Of course, you can't just get hired mid-season. You need to let an association know you're interested in becoming an ump probably around Jan or Feb so you can do training and stuff. But I'd recommend it, or any sort of officiating job as a good job for next summer.

I'm going to break it you, you are not going to find a fun job. I'm pretty lucky and work at a really chill local store... but don't expect much. But if I were you I'd apply at Restaurant, try and be a bus-boy. Tips are the way to go.

Seriously, this is too true. Although the suit a bit much, go everywhere. Ask for the manager when you can and hand it directly to him. Getting a job should be a snap. I can't see how the retail market would function without all these 16-20 year olds doing these jobs through school. You need to try harder.
But be prepared, you'll miss your free time you once had hardcore in the coming months and years...

Go ask friends and go to a temp agency if you really want to see what a shitty job is.
|
just go talk to adults in your neighborhood that own businesses and ask them if they know of anyone that has job openings. You can ask them directly, but oftentimes people are willing to tell you about openings at other places because you are asking for help not asking them indirectly for money.
