I sit there and remind them too.. My daughter has had enough of my reminders that she has the internal annoying version of me in her head, but my son is another story.. then again, hes only 4... I'd love to get another 6 year old to pit her against.. would be funny, we could cast it

I'm just trying to relate their progress.. its very difficult getting kids to focus and remember for example that they need to build a pylon to make more workers and to place buildings.. but I've found that once the foundations are set, they learn on their own.. nothing makes me happier than seeing her hotkey a group of Gateways or Shift sequence building 5 pylons..

Am I the only one who thinks teaching children/infants how to play SC poor parenting? The game is rated T for a reason..it's war with gore, blood, and death. I can't even imagine letting my 8 year old sister watch a full game of SC...heck PLAY the game. You can say all you want that it's not that bad and you can reduce violence and that you are teaching kids not to be afraid of this stuff...but when you're teaching your kid how to play online war before he can barely frigging do basic tasks such as writing or reading...you should know that's pretty messed up.

Yeah just a bit, only 1/7th of the age rating.

Do you have children? Do you actually think that SC2 is even remotely comparable to what they are exposed to on television or the entertainment industry? Its animated violence and the characters are so small its hard for them to even see whats going on. Plus, i think its teaching them strategy, complex thinking, and multitasking.. skills that I would gladly gift my children. I don't let them play the Single Player which is the reason the game is rated T.. Anyway, I respect your opinion but I disagree with it wholeheartedly.. the kids love it and I want to give them a head start!

Wanted to react to the negative guy being against teaching SC2 to our kids, but you beat me to it, saying basically what I wanted to say.

I started playing the first WarCraft game when I was like 5 years old, and StarCraft when I was 6. Grew up with "violent" videogames, such as Zelda and Final Fantasy. I didn't become violent for such a thing. I don't think killing someone is good for any reason, I do not support war. But StarCraft is a game, and kids know what is a game and what is reality. They will not get into fights thinking "That's what they do in StarCraft, that's good.". Blood and violence is part of our culture, if it's not in StarCraft, they will see it in tv, books, hear it from friends at school.

I don't have kids but my parents had my sister when I was 13 or so, so I've seen her being raised from a parent's perspective as opposed to a competitive sibling's perspective (I'm too old for us to be competitive). I do think it's worse than TV but then again it depends on what you let them watch. If you let them watch whatever they want, then obviously there's a lot worse stuff on TV, but most parents don't seem to allow that. The only reason SC doesn't APPEAR to be violent or anything is because competitive players are used to seeing the same battles and deaths over and over so that they eventually lose their meaning. While playing SC2 I don't even think of violence, but I've played SC for years. When I first started playing SC...the violence definitely was noticeable/not that nice (I think I was 9-10 when I started playing BW?). Personally I wouldn't want to expose that to my kids (when I have them) until they are at least 10-11, but that's just me. They can learn that multitasking etc. elsewhere.

I'm not being negative at all, I'm being absolutely realistic. I love SC as much as the next person but it doesn't mean that SC is flawless.

Please, spare me of your "against the odds" story with that poor logic. Violent video games do correlate with violence in children, whether or not you want to believe it. Will it cause it? Not necessarily, but it doesn't reduce violence that's for sure.

@Zapdos

I generally take parenting advice from people without children as much as I take starcraft advice from people that haven't opened the box. I appreciate your idealistic concerns, but I assure you, they are overblown and out of context. This is not Call of Duty, this is Starcraft and it isn't a bad influence on children whatsoever. I have seen no adverse effects from letting my children play starcraft.

This blog is for intended for others with children who are playing starcraft. Your points are noted and understood, but I must disagree with you on the grounds of your inexperience with parenting and an overblown reaction to letting children play starcraft in general.

Exactly my thoughts. I always 'like' how people without children think they know better than me. It's your choice to have this opinion, but I'm sticking with mine. Frankly, the stuff modern television produces is much worse than cartoony StarCraft, which has overally more benefits than harm it could cause.

Nobody said 'expose kids to super violent games and let them play'. It comes down with moderation, what you let your kids play and also, how your kid acts. Generalizing stuff and saying that 'StarCraft is bad for kids' is just silly, pardon me saying that. Raising kids is very individual, as every kid is unique human being and requires unique approach. So yes, I believe that StarCraft can be benefical for my kid, who's otherwise having troubles with focusing and paying attention in general.

On that note, good luck with raising your own kids, when you have them, hoping you'd be more open-minded by time you actually have them. Because if you are not, you may take away many possibilities and opportunities from your kids for no good reason.

When I was 8, I downloaded the demo for that weird looking game called "Warcraft : Orcs and Humans"...
I didn't understand english back then, but I still managed to get countless hours of pleasure out of the demo alone
I would attack the enemy until he had only a farm left, and then I would chop all the lumber on the map and extend my bases all the way to the other gold mines (you couldn't expand in that game...)
That was the good times !

Oh, and Zapdos : I haven't murdered anyone yet.

Kids develop so quickly that it would almost need to be age by age.. Maybe we could do a 6 year old, 7 year old, and 8 year old bracket.. I really think this could be fun to do and just imagine if DJ Wheat cast it! That would be pure awesome!
