Aserkjldsafjkladsfkjlfdaskjl. Part Vent-blog part "need-advice" blog. I've been in diamond for awhile, although only now in Summer have I started to play more (previously only a couple of games on the weekend in like Spring, now maybe a couple each day) and try and improve. Recently I've started playing some Masters league players - initially it went well, getting a couple of wins against them in a row. Now, though, I seem to be right on the edge but not quite, as I keep bouncing back from playing a masters and then losing, playing a diamond and then winning.

Tonight, decided I might try to grind out some ladder to try to get a miracle promotion, or at least bump up my MMR before they lock the leagues. Then I ended up losing both TvPs (against diamonds) to stupid mid-game pushes. I don't get it. What's going wrong? Anytime it goes to 3+ bases, I win largely with drops, but it seems more and more than all protoss has to do is a+move before then and it's game over...

If you're playing Masters players, it's really only a matter of time before you're promoted. Just because you play a Diamond player doesn't mean your MMR isn't increasing or anything. If you're really curious, check the match history of the players you play and see what ranks they're playing. You could just be playing other Diamond players that are on the verge of being promoted as well.

You're going to get some responses saying, leagues don't matter, play to improve. And they're right, but really you just want Masters before S3 or get your MMR high enough to be promoted at the start of the season. Nothing wrong with that. Just grind out games. Glhf!

I feel your pain, man. I've been hovering around rank 1 diamond for a while now and yesterday I decided to mass some games, but I ended up losing most of them because of stupidest mistakes I've ever made. Probably set back my MMR far enough I won't make it to masters before lock.

In 1v1 I've played against some silvers last week. I did not have any big losing streaks or anything. The silver players MMR were just so high they matched master league players.

Damn, woke up today and found that b.net was down with a message on the side saying that was because of "changes" (probably the ladder lock) >.<. In the mean time, does anyone have any advice/comments off of those replays specifically?

Hopefully those diamonds simply have similar MMR, but it still frustrates me to think that I play better and still lose to 2-base a-moves, like in both games I controlled watch towers, built bunkers, tried to optimize my concave at defense, and even micro'd more at certain points, but to no avail

I know that in game 2, for instance, I was behind on the 2nd base and lost on that early push, but I tried to make up for that with the 3 bunkers at my natural with the incoming push, plus the drop that killed a decent number of probes/delayed his push, but he still just rolled over my defenses...

Got promoted to masters this season .

I watched your game against MeanMike and I'd have to say that your biggest problem is probably lacking a solid build order and early macro. Things like thinking your about to get supply blocked while your CC is about to finish shows that you're not really familiar with the build. I'll post a replay of me going reaper expand in TvP, if I can find one. Oh and you pretty much lost the game at around 7min to that 2 gate pressure. 12 scvs lost.

You had raxes sitting without producing any units early in the game, that kind of a mistake is critical and you won't be able to hold any rushes even with 2 bunkers. Why do you skip the marine when you reaper expand? Marines are crucial for killing zealots early and don't delay combat shields, it's a really underrated upgrade and it's a lot faster than stim.

When you did that mid game poke you stimmed way too early and just ended up damaging all your units. Stim only when it's truly needed. You could have kited and harassed those zealots easily without stim since he had no forcefields. Once you had killed some zealots and there was a opening, you could've stimmed in and raped his expo.

At the 15min mark or so when the final push came, you were lacking 10 supply worth of units which included a medivac. Don't drop if you see a big push coming unless you're 100% sure you can hold it. I also watched your cam and noticed that it took you like 10 seconds to react to your army getting attacked = no stimmed bio. Protoss was 1/1 and you were 0/0. That already gives him a big advantage.

TL;DR your play is not as good as you think it is and you can blame only yourself for losing and not the protoss amove.

Lol, I usually don't chat, period, while laddering, unless prompted to by someone else's greeting at start of game, which I'll return. The way I see it, ggs are a more formal courtesy done in things like official tournaments or with people I know, but the automated system of b.net makes ladder more like random generic games, so I don't feel much compelling me to chat it up there. Strange to see you getting so riled over that, though.

Yeah, I was inaccurate in the earlier statement, it isn't that I feel that I am just a better player overall, just that I have better game awareness and overall knowledge of what steps I should be taking to be ahead - ie I knew the push was coming, knew I needed to defend, that his army was out of position so that I could do more damage with the drop, knew what army comp he had so I knew what I needed to get, etc., while the protoss just did a robotic/memorized build and just moved out.

I do agree though that my mechanics is the biggest area of improvement. Yeah, the gaps of production in early game is definitely big, I overcorrect on queuing units by trying to limit them, so I should pay attention to that, plus more general improvement on multi-tasking to keep that macro up.

Build order's also another part of that, I guess part of my personal success more in later games is because it's so much more free-form and about general awareness than specifically crisp builds and timings, my BO awareness doesn't extend much beyond the first few minutes, so yeah I should probably practice that more. I think a bit of that is how I don't consistently try to practice builds, I often try to experiment with different ones, or just vary them frequently so that the infrequency of each build makes it harder for me to consistently refine each one.

Skipping the marine - the 12 rax 12 refinery is just a little thing I do sometimes (not sure if that game I was doing that or just slipped early game) to get that reaper out a little more early, often lets me snipe at least a probe, and I feel that any early zealot pressure is nullified by the reaper, and if they're pushing with a stalker along the first reaper, I'll have at least a marauder and marine out by that time to hold.

Well you would've probably not lost, if you had that drop actually defending your front.

You say that like it's a bad thing. He went 2 gate pressure into expo, I doubt he expected to win the game instantly, but since you had no units he did a ton of damage. He doesn't have to do anything special, because he already got a huge advantage.

12 rax 12 refinery skips an SCV or at least delays one iirc. Besides you're showing your opponent what you're doing. Never show your opponent anything unless you have to. Look at it this way, if you're going 12 rax 13 ref and a marine from ur rax and then chase/kill the scout, what does he know?

He knows you're doing the most standard terran opening which might transition to pretty much anything. When you go 12 rax 12 ref he knows you're getting a reaper -> a stalker will be patrolling the edges of his base. He also knows you're not getting any banshees since they would be too delayed. I could go on and on, but I think you got my point.

Knowing how to play lategame doesn't mean shit, if you have no plan on getting there.
