This thing comes about from a random train of thought I got, with all the whining about "cheese" and "all-in" strategies. I was thinking, SC2 players and their strats sort of remind me of MMA (mixed martial arts, not the player) and the variety of styles and characters involved. So without further ado, here's some comparisons:

(no pics because I'm a photoshop n00b and it's late and I wanna sleep soon and I'm lazy to source for pics)

Anderson Silva

+ Show Spoiler +
SC2 Equivalent = MC

Both of these guys are extremely well rounded but have a preference for a certain style.

Both of these guys are well accepted to be one of the Top 3 in their respective sports.

MC likes aggressive timing attacks and transitioning into destroying his opponent's base. Anderson likes aggressive strikes and transitioning into destroying his opponent's face.

Both Anderson Silva and MC are notable because they're both extremely cocky.

Anderson Silva started getting a lot of hate after his performances against Thales Leites, Patrick Cote and Demian Maia in which he won, but didn't bother finishing the fight. MC started getting a lot of hate after his performance against July in which he won, but almost always resorted to 1 or 2 base timing attacks.

Georges St Pierre

+ Show Spoiler +
SC2 Equivalent = Nestea

Both of these guys are extremely well rounded but in contrast to Anderson Silva (MC) have a preference for solid safe styles. GSP preferring to outwrestle or outbox his opponent (depending on their weaknesses), Nestea preferring to outmacro his opponent.

Both of these guys are well accepted to be one of the Top 3 in their respective sports.

Both of these guys are rather humble and more desirable as a model to represent the sport.

Both of these guys are students of the game. GSP has been known to learn different styles and is good at wrestling, submissions and striking. Nestea is the Detective Zerg, constantly learning about his opponent in game.

BJ Penn

+ Show Spoiler +
SC2 Equivalent = Idra
Both of these guys are extremely well rounded and have a preference for solid safe styles. BJ Penn using his extremely good boxing and Idra using his extremely good macro.

Both of these guys are champion calibre.

Both of these guys are pretty outspoken whiners.

Both of these guys have a history of quitting. BJ Penn vs GSP in UFC 94, Idra vs MMA in MLG Columbus (the list could actually go on).

Both of these guys are very vocal about their disdain for other players.

Shane Carwin

+ Show Spoiler +
SC2 Equivalent = Anypro
Anypro's good at aggressive timing attacks, but has been shown that if his timing attacks fail, he's pretty out of his zone. Carwin is known for his one punch knockout power, but has been shown to gas after the first round.

Lyoto Machida

+ Show Spoiler +
SC2 Equivalent = MarineKing
Lyoto Machida is known for introducing the sport to a unique Karate-based style.
MarineKing is known for introducing the sport to a unique Marine-based style.

Both guys received a lot of criticism for their styles, but manage to have relative success, Lyoto being #1 by winning the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, MarineKing being #1 in the SC2 KongLine

Both have rivals which gives them nightmares. Lyoto's is Shogun Rua (who very dubiously lost by decision to him once and then proceeded to KO him in their rematch). MarineKing's is MVP (who beat him twice in two separate GSL Finals)

Randy Couture

+ Show Spoiler +
SC2 Equivalent = Boxer
Both known to be one of the legends and figureheads of their respective sports.

Boxer founded the very successful SlayerS team. Couture founded the very successful Xtreme Couture team.

Couture came back from retirement to win a couple of UFC titles. Boxer came back from retirement to place Top 4 in GSL and win 2 GSTL titles.

Couture (until his recent retirement) was the oldest active member of UFC's roster. Boxer is the oldest player in the GSL.

Chuck Liddell

+ Show Spoiler +
SC2 Equivalent = Artosis
Both continued to stay in the sport even though they should have retired a long time back.

Both suffered embarrassing losses as a result.

Lol... I kid. No disrespect meant to any of them

That's all I can think of for now. I may or may not come up with a Part 2.

EDIT: Oh wow... just saw this blog post: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=208903. I didn't steal the idea from him. Just a coincidence.

Artosis as Chuck Liddell?
When I think about Chuck Liddell I think about someone who was invincible for quite some time.
But then as time went on, he started losing and fell off the throne.
Sounds like Fruitdealer to me.

5/5 I laugh.
One differences with GSP and Nestea is
GSP can't finish off his opponents, while many opponents GG and tap out to Nestea.

correct me if im wrong, but the Goldberg who does commentating in the UFC with Joe Rogan, is NOT bill goldberg.. isnt it Mike Goldberg or something??

Bill Goldberg does do some commentating I think, but not at the UFC events/top tier level.

If that was the case though, I could see maybe Day9 being like him, cause Day9 used to be pretty damn good himself back in the day.

gotta love the BJ Penn to Idra comparison, couldnt be more spot on with that one.

You might be right. Bill has done color commentary for MMA but it looks like he did it for EliteXC. I could have sworn he had done it for some UFC events but I guess not.
