So. It's been almost 2 months. Of begging my dad. My mom. Asking for a new computer. That can play Medium with no lag. 2 freakin months.
And I still didn't get it.
So here's the story, really.
I got Starcraft 2 in November, got hooked (I always get hooked to whatever games my cousins are playing), got placed in Bronze, bleh. 2 weeks later, Silver (I was so happy my mom thought I was having some heart attack), then 2 weeks later, Gold.
About a month later, got into Plat, 2 months later, Diamond.
Now I'm in diamond. 1100 point diamond. As protoss...then after 700+ games on my desktop (wow, I seriously have no life) I started playing terran on my cousin's account (he doesn't play anymore, he GAVE the account to me, so it's not sharing <3) and played about 100 games already in 3 weeks. Nothing special....right?
I then touched my cousin's computer. It's the best i5 (something that this i5 has better gHz then the other ones), with good parts...maybe it wasn't even the best, but I played on that on Extreme graphics...with no lag. It was like a first love. It was totally awesome.
I played about 10 games on it, won every one. Force fields looked like force fields, maxed armies don't kill your computer...4-gate felt easy to stop (well, it's still pretty easy), shadows were actually on the ground, creep had a liquid cover over it...macro felt perfect.
Then I went back to my single-core computer from 2003.
It felt really slow. I mean, marines give me a lag spike when they stim...force fields are about a second delayed (and you can hardly see em)...force fields never go down against zerg because creep lags...and this is on low-graphics. Seriously? Really? When I play terran on my computer...it's impossible to kite (2 FPS never hurt anyone right? Right? no.)
So for the past two months, I've been asking my parents for a new computer. Of course, I have to admit, I AM going to use that computer for gaming, I know that. They have reasons:
1. Get your own job and get your own money.
Well, I could understand this, but guess what. My dad doesn't let me spend my money (allowance, bank money) so I don't really believe that if I earn my own money, he'll just let me buy it. Further then that, I'm 14 and there's really no jobs out except for volunteering (which doesn't pay). I saved a lot of money, but I can't spend it on anything I want except for treating my parents to dimsum (typical asian family) or treating your grandparents for more dimsum (again, typical asian family)
2. We don't want you to play too much computer.
Getting me a new computer won't make me play more, or play less. I do have a schedule, but heck, it's summer vacation. I have to take the bus to school, take the highway and stuff so it's a 15 minute drive (or a 6 hour walk, because it goes through a ton of freeways and highways and otherways <---see what I did there) and a lot of my friends live there.
The friends that live in my area...eh, just in case they read, I'm just gonna say they SUCK. Typical chat:
Me: "Hi/Sup/Sup man/yo" Them: "you talkin to me?/lol gay homo"
Yeah that's so funny. Seriously, most of them (not all) are -kind of- spoiled (sleeping at 3AM, getting ps3/xbos360/both/new computer when they get a B on a report card, getting 50 dollars every A on their report cards) And these are the ASIANS in my school. No offense, but the other races (no racism here either) are even worst at my school.
My friends (online friends) are always cooler then that, they understand me, don't call me "gay homo" or "retarded", we play Minecraft together, Maplestory together, we chat on MSN a lot. I'm tech-savvy. I like computers. I like online friends. No, dey no pedo >
As you can probably read so far, "real life" kinda sucks. My friends are no help what-so-ever, school's over (and being the asian I am, only getting As and Bs <----omfg a B you fake azn noob while my friends get straight Cs/Bs and get a new something)
Further more then that, I recently finished my piano exams (grade 8) and my parents said they might buy me a gaming keyboard about a month before the exam. After the exam, we had sushi to "celebrate" and that apparently replaced my gaming keyboard. WDF.
The only part I like in my real life is my youth group @ church, totally awesome, they play Starcraft, we're asian, we like funny videos, related in a lot of ways. Except the sucky friend part at their school, but then again, I have a couple friends @ school that I can talk to (but we don't share the same interests)
But back to the main point.
All I'm asking for is just one new computer that can play Starcraft II on Medium graphics with no lag, a computer that can play Minecraft without lagging on world generation, a computer that can run Firefox and Starcraft at the same time (single core 1.5GB ram ftw ._.)
1. Is that asking too much? 2. How should I confront my parents concerning this topic?
Thanks for reading, if you read this far, you are now cooler then 90% of my school friends <3
EDIT: I'm thinking of making a Starcraft 2 category on my MSN list, if you guys wanna chat about SC2 or anything you can add my MSN: protoclone@ hotmail.com

I recommend getting into programming or photoshop or something. So that you WILL use the computer for other things that enhance your life. Your parents don't seem like the type that will do this solely for your pleasure. But really that old of a computer can be a hindrance to modern academic or job-oriented computer use. So start showing an interest in photo editing, video editing, or programming, wait a few months and slowly complain more and more that you'd love to do more of ___ but you can't because your computer is just too slow for it to be worthwhile.
I think that's your best bet.

Alternatively fry your motherboard and feign ignorance when it won't turn on anymore, just say something like "I TOLD you this computer was a piece of crap!" It'll suck till you get a new one, but you inevitably will.
I think that is NOT your best bet. But depending on how desperate you are...
|
Maybe go to a PC cafe/pc bang? You'll be out of the house all day and your parents will probably think you are out with friends mainly. That + it's probably more affordable for you.
|
There are plenty of reasons for your parents not to buy you a PC, one of them is money, and most of the reasons you brought up are valid - so yeah maybe you are asking for too much. I know my parents wouldn't have bought me one because it was a big purchase for them too.
Good luck tho

Yeah, but what if they get him another crappy computer>.<
i think you just need to convince them one way or another. maby propose to them that if you pass some test with an A you can buy your computer? oh and if you have them that far don't forget to remind them as often as possible that they promised you that so they can't buy you off with some silly dinner.

He has money on the bank if you read the text:\

Dude, i totally know how it is to play on a laggy comp as I play on a laptop that was not designed for gaming (notebook). It's the worst ever ^^ I'm toss, high-plat btw
I think you should just be more persistent about it. Just be like: "Mom! Dad! I really want a new computer!" - then explain to them what u told us here: that you don't have a fixed schedule of playing and getting a new computer won't mean u gaming more often. Tell them u will be doing more games over the summer break but that's normal cause u don't have any real friends and u would have nothing to do/get borred otherwise!
That's your best bet!

RoTaNiMoD- I already know how to use Photoshop, studying Java and C# (that sounds good but really I'm just a casual programmer), a lot of my online friends are Java developers (we make private servers, and not just those "download files and open EXE and get server") but that didn't make a difference....because those skills were for computer games, rofl (I'm a gamer)...
Photoshop was to make banners for forums/server websites and server promotions, Java was for coding in features for my friend's private server...if I learned those things for something else other then games, I would lose interest really quick... then again I could say Java's memory heap is too much on my computer and I need a new one to handle the new memory leaks that I seem to mess up on.
And with that motherboard thing, LOL, I once ragequit on Starcraft cause I missed a force field (computer, that spell was right on the middle of the ramp) and let lings up my ramp, kicked my computer, tower tipped over and it wouldn't turn on for the next 30 minutes...I was almost satisfied with myself. Sadly, my dad's pretty good at computers and he can fix those things pretty easily (except when it literally dies)
Zapdos, with the PC cafe, I'm kind of in a rural area inbetween two cities, so the nearest PC cafes would be about a 15 minute drive, and I don't have a car (buses don't go near us, and even so, I don't know how to bus, I stay at home all the time)
Thanks guys keep em coming
EDIT: @Vain Nah, my dad can figure out good prices, my computer uses a 512MB NVIDIA graphic card, store-bought for 5 dollars. Kinda old, but I checked, it should be able to run Starcraft on medium (but my processor sucks), it's just the idea of me getting a new computer is annoying them ("you play too much")
Also, getting an A on a test is mandatory. If I don't get an A on a test, I actually get in trouble. Typical asian, am I right?
@IMBAjr
I read this:
cause u don't have any real friends and I lol'd pretty hard but it's kinda true, I mean, I got "friends" but they're really only skin-deep. Anything further then gaming or the hockey game "layer" you can't really talk to or they'll think you're "emotional and stupid". Isn't that just dumb?
Yeah, I even played on my laptop, it was slowwwww, 4-gating was impossible on it , I got like 10 FPS when I started. I got to plat on that thing though, got to diamond on my desktop
And my dad's kinda annoyed already, so I can't really continue asking him :/
I'm losing my options D:

Make the decision you're going to get it. The money will come when you make the decision.

Just find a job.
In case you haven't read...
And as stated before, money's not the problem -exactly-, I have enough money to get a new computer, it's just that they won't let me because they think I'm gonna be one of those people that died by playing Starcraft for 60 hours (believe me, my mom's used that example more than once)
|
Ask one of your church friends if you could just borrow some money from them to get a new computer? Then your parents will HAVE to pay them back right since thats the Asian standard to pay people back ASAP(I"m asian).
|
My parents did this once when I wanted a new computer. Turns out they were just waiting to give me one for my birthday.
|
Well, they're my age, they're not rich either that they can afford to lend me like 500 dollars, and, I already have the money anyways. That and a lot of my church friends are somewhat related to me (4 of them are my cousins, lol) and the other 4 are good friends of my parents. They would know.
And their parents don't let them spend their money either.
-sigh- I just opened Firefox and iTunes and iTunes froze for a minute cause it was too slow.
@post above me
For my birthday, I got about 200 dollars in red pocket money. And my mom took that to the bank to "save interest" and I never saw it again except for that day. And if I take it out, I won't be allowed to spend it.
My dad said wait till university.

Hmmm... my parents kinda the same way when I was in high school. :/
I get a 98 on a test and get yelled at for not getting 104 or something equally dumb. Was not allowed to have/use a computer until I left the house, also my parents had to approve every piece of clothing down to my shoes. (Very conservative nasty family.) Had a job but was only allowed to spend on insurance and gas and approved expenses. My dad controlled my bank account.
Then went away to a college of my choice, and have lived happily ever, after not seeing them since I left almost three years ago.
I suspect that no matter how much you beg or what tactics of persuasion you try, you will probably just not get it. (Unless you demonstrate a huge commitment to making Comp Sci your major, and get into it enough to make MIT a possibility, or something.) In the meantime, yeah, life sucks because your parents unfairly and stupidly control it. However, at least you are able to play your games (I play on a very crappy laptop, so yeah, it sucks, but at least it runs), and once you finally move out, seems you will have enough money saved to buy a top of the line machine.
Sorry this is not very helpful for dealing with the immediate issue, and waiting that long is awful-- but once you are finally 18 it's your life to ruin or live.

You can't get a job, you are not allowed to spend your money, and your parents won't buy you a new computer. Guess what? You aren't getting a new computer. Sometimes we have to live without certain things, it is a fact of life. A new computer is not something that is necessary for survival so you can live without it.

I already told them I'm looking forward to it (it being when I'm out of school)
I already plan to go into computers when I grow up, whether Computer Science, Engineering, Animation, Visual Arts (or something like that) for computers.... But I wanna go into some Starcraft tournaments (LAN tournaments) because I feel like if I get a better computer, I could win some (my 10 win streak on a good computer kinda proves it)...but yeah.
I guess I should be content with my computer, but the fact that it's so slow compared to my friends...omg they play on Extreme graphics and they're in like, Silver, whereas I have to play on low with lag and I'm in Diamond. I feel like, with a better computer I could get into Masters...
Thanks for your experience, glad we share something in common

Mhm..ok. Not sure how to respond to that. So your advice is to just accept it and move on?
I'll keep that in mind, when all hope is lost, I'll do that (just got a little hope from my mom :D )

Did you know some people are all grown-up and can't afford a better computer? Stop being selfish by thinking your inability to play SC2 at medium or above settings is even a problem. And it won't make you a much better player. I have a good computer and I suck.

it's easy. there are several ways to approach this, coming from a chinese family myself.
personally, if you are desperate, i reccomend sabotaging your computer. maybe opening it and snapping a few things in half. then tell your parents the computer is broken.
your 14 years old. and have schoolwork. sooner or later they will cave. they always do. you may not have internet or a computer for awhile. this is called no pain, no gain.
you don't have to get one thats 2-3k dollars. i'm sure there are many modern computers that are a few hundred that run perfectly well and better than any 2003 model.
goodluck, godspeed.
