I experienced the same thing back when I was in high school. The only real thing that you can do is just wait patiently and look around the internet for really good deals (black friday might work). After you find a killer deal, explain to your parents how large of a deal the computer or parts are. If that doesn't work then just try to be as patient as possible.

I've had the same computer for about 6 years, and while I would love to buy a new one for myself, tuition is much more important =/.

For those telling him to sabotage his computer, isn't that a bit extreme? Maybe his family can't afford (I haven't read the whole thread) the computer, and they might be pressured into buying a new computer for him to do school work and possibly forgo another important living expense.

As a fellow Asian, I never had any money when I was 14.

Babysitting, lawn services, waitering, caddying, and door to door sales are your best bet.

Also, I lost two years of my life to this computer.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

@the guy that told me forget it

Yes, I do realize that.

I firmly believe that it will make me a better player because I have already reached the skill ceiling I can possibly get with my computer. So far, all my losses are due to lag (it's hard to say how, but if I could actually kite faster then one hit per 10 seconds I think I could've killed 10 chargelots) or force fields that never come because my computer is on 1-2 FPS (once I even hit 1 frame per 3 seconds in a custom game) As stated, playing on my cousin's computer made me a much better player that I could play diamond-masters players with no problem (and winning em) when on my computer, diamonds are normal because I can't do anything after 2 bases (third bases lag a LOT)

I can see where you got the idea of me being selfish, with me asking "How do I get a computer from my parents". If you want to think that way, I can't change your thoughts. Although I feel like I kind of earned the right to get a new computer (I mean, I'm just asking for the RIGHT to get a new computer, I'll still pay for it, I'll still handle what parts to buy, and not to mention that my grades are "asian-level", the piano exams, the fact that I have beared with their rules for so long (10 PM bedtime, really?)

I'm saying that right now I still have a little hope that my parents will buy me one, because my mom did a little interrogation with my dad "How come that computer's lagging? You said it was much faster after you tweaked it.." and that "You can't do that, say it was faster and stuff...". If you were in my position, you would dwell even on the slightest hope until that dissapears too, somehow.

Thank you for your advice though.

EDIT: 2 Posts under it:
My dad apparently watches all the prices of all the computer stores near us. He gets notifications by email every time there's something special. Redflagdeals (I'm in Canada) helps. When something's cheap, he would show me, and I would say "Buy it." Then his reply would be:
"Wait till it's even MORE cheap." <----happened with my iPod (wow I have an iPod)

Then by the time it's cheap, a new thing came out (iPod 3G, back then) and he'll be like "Let's save up money for the better one." then when we get enough money, "Wait till it's more cheap" and yeah. So asian, right? Saving money = good, but not buying anything...ugh.

And, I have money, even if I earned it washing toilets door-to-door my dad still wouldn't let me spend it. It's the "idea" of buying a new computer that they don't allow. Any ideas on how to convince my parents to LET me?

Oh yeah, just a note to everyone, I asked my dad for my birthday if I could have the right to spend my own money to get a gift for myself (!) and even that was a no.

It's a computer.

Did you know some people are all grown-up and can't afford a better computer? Stop being selfish by thinking your inability to play SC2 at medium or above settings is even a problem. And it won't make you a much better player. I have a good computer and I suck.

>>> Better computer won't make you a better player

>>> OP explained better computer makes him play much much better.

wat.

Cyclone, have you tried hitting your parents in the face, stealing their wallet and running off to buy a comp? That might work technically speaking :o

Haha^

Well, being a christian (and I'm not trying to sound like I'm a "super good kid", I do do my shares of bad things like complaining -cough-OP-/cough-) I wouldn't like to do that because it feels kinda bad D: and I have a HUGE conscience when something goes wrong, I feel guilty for the next 3 years or something...and yeah.

And my dad would know if I got a new computer or not, he's in the computer room as much as I'm in it (well, at school days, after he's done working)

if your parents reason to deny you the comp is money u are just screwed....
but, if not, you can negotiate, idk, help with garden, clean the house, clean the car, help with dishes, idk whatever, help your parents in any activity they ussually do... etc. imo is your best choice.

Did you ask your parents what they would like in return for the favour of a new computer? Some parents feel that their boy isn't sporty enough, or hangs out with chicks too little or whatever.

I think I stated 5 times in this thread that it's not money, it's the idea.

@BouBou

Yeah, they didn't give me a reason. All they basically said "NO IS NO". But I'll try that again.

You've already laid out a lot of your problem. I had a similar one, so I'll give you some advice which I hope is helpful.

To answer your questions:
1) Sounds like your family is financially stable, maybe not much spending money, and they really value family family family. Plus, in their mind, you already have a computer you can play it on. You have the best view of your situation, rephrased: how much is it really asking? Lots of family meals and lots of lost time.

2) When you confront your parents, make sure your end-goal is a win-win scenario. They get what they want, you get what you want. When I did, it was mostly "I want this." They'd go, "Why?" And I'd say, "Because it would make me happy." I win, they lose. Why would they?

some other thoughts:

1) Your parents don't really care about your achievements. They care about your development as a person. The accolades and awards are great, cause for celebration, but they aren't reasons you can use against your parents. Your external accomplishments aren't you, they're indications of who you are. Some overzealous parents might take them as the ONLY indicators, beside the point.

2) Gotta go so this short answer. Demonstrate how playing SCII will help you towards your AND your parent's goals.

3) Take responsibility for everything that happens in your life but don't worry over the things you can't control.

You sound so very much spoiled.

So you are 14 and you have no job? The money you are calling yours is still being earned by your parents so stop bitching about not being given anything you decide to want...

I think you should sit your parents down and make a schedule of all the things that you are going to do (homework, athletics, chores) once you get the new computer. I am Chinese myself and the thing is with parents is that they don't want the computer to interrupt your studies. You need to PROVE that you are actually responsible enough for a new computer by showing them with a schedule like OK, from 9-12 I'm going to be studying and then from 12-3 I will be doing chores and then talk with them about how a computer will NOT be affecting your studies even if you have to do your homework at the kitchen table AWAY from the computer. Only through negotiation and showing responsibility will your parents even consider getting you a new computer or consider letting you have a little bit more freedom with your own money. Send me a PM or something if you wanna talk about it further.

What the hell man. It's illegal to get a job until your are 16 (Canada so I am not sure) i do believe, and if it is his money it is his money -_-

What, did you work in the coal mines as an orphan when you were 6 or something?

Playing better does not equal being a better player. Take this situation: if you use cheat codes, then your play is better, but you are not a better player.

You're not really equating children working in coal mines to children not getting a computer that can run starcraft 2 on the best setings? I know (hope?) you're not; just asking you not tot be ridiculous...

I would give this a second read. This seems like the best way to go and it seems similar to what I've experienced.

You're young and you're a nerd. A few things:

- Real life situations and people are always better than online ones. If you can't find any good friends IRL, what are you going to do when you need help and actual support? Sign in to MSN? But that's a whole other topic.

- You seem to spend a lot of time on the computer regardless. This is probably a concern for your parents. There are various ways to lead a life based on a virtual environment, but the most common one is being a loser, as in having a shitty job and only working to pay the bills and leave your job to play WoW. People like Day9 have achieved things. But for each Day9 there is a million of basement dwellers who are nothing but brainless consumers. Being Masters in SC2 shouldn't be your biggest goal; you need ambitions.
And you need to show your parents that you have expectations, ambitions and personality. Show them that you are interested in programming, design or anything that you love and that could be your work later.
If your only ambition is playing SC2, you just don't deserve anything from them. Period.

- If playing SC2 pisses you off, quit playing for some time.

- Understand that having a brand new computer is not a necessity, and that people around the world die of hunger, etc. In short, man up and don't whine about it.

You need to show that you deserve such a thing and that you can manage it. If it's just a random desire they might as well 1) Tell you that they'll buy a new car "just because they want to" 2) Be worried about you not wanting to stop playing with your brand new toy.

Maybe I'm being harsh, but please realize you're a spoiled teenager like any other. Don't blame your parents.

Ps: talking about races is being racist. Racism does not necessarily involve a strong hate, but mostly a latent desire for separation and fear of the unknown.
Le long pour l'un pour l'autre est court (le mot-à-mot du mot "amour").
