Hello everyone! I have been making custom Transformers figures for a few years now, but recently I decided to take my work to the next level with building a highly detailed diorama. I have been a Starcraft fan since about 1998, and I wanted to put that love into this project of mine. I am eager to share the process with you all. I'm looking forward to your constructive criticism and valuable feedback. This project is my big undertaking for the following year. I hope to have it finished for my birthday in 2012 (you know, before the world ends).
So, about the diorama. I am building a scene set on the Protoss homeworld of Aiur. I will be building a Hydralisk and a pair of Zerglings, ~possibly~ an Overlord, as well as a Zealot accompanied by a pylon.
Features of the diorama that I plan or would like to incorporate are as follows:
Rotating (i.e. motor-driven) pylon 'Realistic' Zerg creep An Overlord producing creep A creature native to Aiur (the 'Bengalaas') struggling to Escape the creep over Flow Zealot Psi-blade LED's Flora discoloration (i.e. wilting, decay) as the creep 'advances' over it
The base figures that I sourced for this build are as follows:
DC Universe Classic sGreen Latern G'Hu ( http://cgi.ebay.com/DC-Universe-Green-Lantern-Classics-GHU-figure-Wave-2-/110697716341?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c6191a75#ht_772wt_1139 ; Zealot head) World of Warcraft Lady Vasj ( http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Lady-Vashj-Figure/dp/B002D3032W/ref=pd_sbs_t_3 ; Hydralisk lower body) World of Warcraft Series 4 Succubus Demon ( http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Succubus-Amberlash-Action/dp/B001EW0HHY ; Hydralisk arms, Zergling horns and tail) Halo: Reach Elite Officer ( http://cgi.ebay.com/MCFARLANE-HALO-REACH-SERIES-2-ELITE-OFFICER-FIGURE-/270762448856?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0ab317d8#ht_3468wt_905 ; Zealot body, Hydralisk head) Warhammer Chaos Warhounds ( http://www.ccgarmory.com/wafawaofch.html ; Zergling body)
Here are a few pictures of the work as it progresses:

Very good work on an interesting idea! The choice to 'cannibalize' other figures is particularly cool.
I'm curious how you plan on creating realistic zerg creep. I'm not sure how important environment usually is in dioramas, but in this instance, it seems as though it would be the most important aspect.

Thanks! You are right that the environment is an important aspect in the diorama. It is especially so in this project that I have planned, because essentially I will be building a perfect landscape, only to then go back in and ruin it with Zerg creep.
As for the creep, a company by the name of Woodland Scenics offers a product that is used to create water for dioramas. It is a bag full of opaque pellets that you heat in a pan and then pour onto the diorama. I will be using Citadel washes to dye the Woodland Scenics 'water' to a grey/purple hue to best simulate the creep.

An ambitious project, looks like you've got it all planned out though, so best of luck to you! You say you want it done by 2012, what time in 2012 are we looking at here? is this a 6 month project or an 18 month project?
|
I think it'd be a ton better if you actually made the models yourself instead of mashing different figurines into one.. But hey, good luck it sounds like a long journey.

Thank you! My birthday is in July, so we're looking at just about a year.

Thanks. There will be a lot of sculpting involved. By the time all is said and done, you probably won't recognize the donor parts anyway.
